Here’s How Oprah’s Friend Chef Art Smith Lost 85 Pounds + More Success Stories!

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Here’s the picture of me just before I started my weight loss journey over a year ago…

And…

That’s one of the most recent pictures of me. Of course, I’m the one in the purple dress. I was at my friend Ed Stevens’ birthday party in Brooklyn. You can really tell in my face that I’ve made weight loss progress. And I have to thank my friends at New York Health & Racquet Club for helping me with my weight loss success so far!

I’m pretty proud of myself for the progress that I’ve made, but I’ve still got a long way to go & I’m taking it slow. We’re in the process of getting me a new trainer. I’m also about to start supplementing my trainer workouts with other classes at New York Health & Racquet Club. Now that it’s warm, I’m more willing to get out & do more. Keep checking back for my progress.

We’re all trying to get healthier and lose weight in preparation for summertime, so I thought I’d share some inspirational & motivational weight loss success stories with you…including Oprah’s friend Chef Art Smith! I hope these stories motivate you like they’ve motivated me :-)

According to Oprah.com

Just before celebrating his 50th birthday, Art Smith, Oprah’s former personal chef, discovered he needed reading glasses. “I thought I was just turning older,” he says.

Soon after, Art noticed other ailments that landed him in the emergency room. “I thought I was having a heart attack,” he says.

Finally, doctors delivered a shocking diagnosis–Art had diabetes. It horrified me because my father has diabetes. My mother has diabetes on her side of the family,” he says. “I just had to take action. If not, I wasn’t going to be around.”

Art lost 85 pounds through good, old-fashioned diet and exercise. Even better, his new healthy lifestyle reversed his diagnosis. “Once the belly fat disappears, then it’s no longer sending chemicals out to the muscles saying, ‘Ignore the insulin,’” Dr. Oz explains.

While he admits to occasionally indulging in a piece of real fried chicken, Art has found a way to make his signature dish healthier. “When I want to enjoy it more, [I] can make it lighter,” he says. “The fact is you’ve got to get rid of the skin and you’ve got to use a multigrain type of coating because it’s all in the crust was where the fat is.” Art also uses Greek yogurt instead of buttermilk to coat the chicken for less fat and more protein.

Though he’s done the hard work himself, Art says he couldn’t have done it without his loved ones. “[Friends said,] ‘We want you to stay with us,’” he says. “They embraced me.”

Art lost the weight by eating yummy foods like that Southern Unfried Chicken! I’m hoping that he’ll write a cookbook with more of the recipes that helped him lose weight. In the meantime, Here’s the recipe for the unfried chicken:

Servings: Serves 8

Ingredients:

Art Smith’s Southern Oven Unfried Chicken

*8 drumsticks , skinless

According to ThatsFit.com

Name: Christina Ramos

Age: 28

Height: 5 feet, 7 inches

Before Weight: 220 pounds

How I Gained It: Growing up, I had always been active with some sort of organized sports, whether it was soccer, track or lacrosse, but I started gaining weight when I stopped playing competitive sports after high school. After graduating, I didn’t play sports in college and pretty much stopped exercising altogether as a result. However, I continued to eat as if I was still working out two to three hours a day, which was definitely not the case. Most students gain the freshman 15, but I started to pack on the pounds the summer before I even set foot on campus. My eating habits worsened when I got to college. By January, I had gained over 40 pounds.

Breaking Point: My unhappiness with how I physically looked and felt was consuming my life and affecting my college experience — I realized I was avoiding social engagements and missing out on opportunities. College is supposed to be the time of your life, but I wasn’t making the most of it. The tipping point was seeing photos of myself at my heaviest and coming to the realization that I was as big as I felt.

How I Lost It: Once I had decided to make a change, I found a friend who would commit to running with me four days a week. We would run or walk in all types of weather after our classes in the middle of winter in Maine. Eventually we began running more and more as the weather got better, and by summer, I was hooked on running and I’ve been doing it ever since. Two years ago, I started joining 5K runs to challenge myself, and the last October, I completed my first half-marathon in under two hours.

But running hasn’t been my only tool in my weight loss journey. After graduating from college and starting my first full-time job, I found that cooking for myself, balancing work and finding time to hit the road was challenging and I slowly began to gain the weight back. I joined Weight Watchers with my best friend in May 2006 to help me maintain my weight loss, but I ended up losing more weight than I had actually gained. I became a “Lifetime Member” in 2007 and have never looked back.

Most importantly, I’ve changed my lifestyle and eating habits in order to be healthier, not just thinner. I have to remind myself of that every day, especially on those days that I slip up. When I do, I just get back on program with the next meal or through my workout. My weight can fluctuate two or three pounds depending on the season, but instead of obsessing over the weight I try to focus on how far I’ve come and how good I feel. I keep a picture of myself at my heaviest weight with me in my purse at all times to give me the perspective I sometimes need to encourage myself because I’m determined not to go back.

My goals going forward are to try new ways to exercise and tone my body. I’ve started lifting weights and playing soccer, and I also do circuit training, spinning classes and ab workouts. If I can’t make it to a fitness class or the gym, I work out at home using my own set of weights and free exercise shows. As I see my body slowly change, it’s empowering to know I have the strength and ability to change my body.

After Weight: 145 pounds

Real change takes time — it took Christina several years to reach her goal weight, but she’s maintained it for two years.

Chef Scott Wall in Walnut Creek, Calif. is an inspiration to men everywhere. If you think staying lean and healthy is difficult for you, then imagine what it’s like when it’s your job to create food most people would die for on a nightly basis. For Wall, that wasn’t easy, since he eats roughly 80 percent of his meals at the restaurant, where he has worked since graduating from culinary school in 2000. But after he tipped the scales at 330 pounds, he knew it was time for a change.

He’s lost an astonishing 125 pounds in the last two years by exercising and changing his diet. His new lease on life has also meant creating seasonal, healthy dishes that don’t skimp on flavor. Some of the dishes he’s designed (and now offers on his menu for his patrons to help them lose weight as well) include grilled steelhead salmon with English peas, asparagus and vine ripened tomato salsa, as well as blackened Alaskan Halibut with sweet corn and cherry tomato relish. Wall’s weight loss is infectious, which is why we asked him how he’s able to eat smart when his main job is to keep his customers full and satisfied.

That’s Fit: What was the downside health-wise of being in your profession?

Scott Wall: It’s definitely the long days of working in the kitchen with very little exercise. It’s a vicious cycle. I would consume large amounts of food at one sitting, usually late at night right before going to sleep. A lot of those meals were fast food because that was the only thing open after working every night. Add in a few after-work drinks and it was a very unhealthy combination.

TF: What made you decide that enough was enough with your weight?

SW: I just wasn’t feeling healthy any more. Plus, photos taken at our company picnic scared me — I didn’t realize quite how large I had become until I saw them. Throughout my life, I’ve always been athletic, but at my heaviest, I was nothing close to athletic. I would have times where I was short of breath doing things that never tired me out when I wasn’t as heavy, like walking up a flight of stairs in the parking garage, or getting to my truck after work. I was even shopping at Big and Tall to find pants that fit, which I’d never done before.

TF: What changes does a chef make with his diet to trim down?

SW: The most effective change I made to my diet was to cut out fried foods, cheeses and butter. I also try to eat more in the mornings now, knowing that I have all day to burn the calories off by being active. Plus, I spread my food consumption over four or five smaller meals in a day and stop eating several hours before going to bed.

Nutritionally, I haven’t had fast food in probably two years. I also don’t eat out nearly as much now, which is challenging because as a chef it’s part of my job to dine at other restaurants and see what’s out there, but it’s too much of a temptation. Other changes I made have included cutting out eating most breads and heavy carbs, and creating power salads. Instead of eating sandwiches, these salads include tons of vegetables (raw or blanched), proteins, like chicken breast or ahi tuna, a whole avocado, garlic, onions, herbs and jalapeños. I now dress my salads with lemon juice, vinegar and a little oil, or, with salsa. If I do eat a sandwich, I’ll use guacamole instead of mayonnaise and cheese. Finally, I’ve also cut out the majority of alcohol consumption, soda and energy drinks. The empty calories just weren’t worth it, so now, I drink lots of water and iced tea.

TF: Do you find time to work out with your busy schedule?

SW: Exercise played a huge role in my weight loss. I was working out around 5-6 days a week when I really began to drop the weight. When I would go to the gym, I try to work out harder because I knew I might not be there for a day or two. Now that I’ve reached my target weight, I’ve leveled that out a bit and work out two or three days a week.

TF: What activities really shaved off the pounds for you?

SW: I never got into taking classes at the gym because I can’t usually fit them into my schedule, since my only free time tends to be after work, which is between midnight and 2:00 a.m. So I began to run a lot more, which I never did before. I also played a lot of five-on-five full court basketball and lifted free weights to tone and build muscle. But now that I’ve lost the weight, I am really focusing on my abs more by doing a lot more core exercises to try and lose the extra skin I have left over on my belly.

TF: Finally, what’s been the biggest challenge for a chef that makes it difficult to stay slim?

SW: Being in the restaurant and surrounded by all this good food! A lot of our menu is really hearty stuff like meat and potatoes, especially in the colder winter months. It’s really hard to avoid things like the French fry bowl and staying away from the cheeses and breads. For me, it’s picking at food that I really had to stop, since I never found myself sitting down and eating a whole bowl of food. I also have trouble staying away from the desserts. The pastry chef we have is really creative and it’s hard to avoid them — and the cookie jar we have on the counter. But, you just have to be strict with yourself. You can just as easily snack on blanched green beans or broccoli as you can on mashed potatoes. It’s all a matter of just saying no — then shoving fruit into your mouth instead of a French fry!

Check Out Pics Of What I’ve Been Eating + Download This Weight Loss App!

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

So my weight loss goal at the beginning of the year was to get into a bikini by the 4th of July. Sometimes I feel I’ll reach that goal, sometimes I don’t. I’m just being honest with you. But on those occasions when I feel myself not fully confident that this goal can become reality, I try to remember a quote I have on my fridge…

‘To increase the odds that an important change will occur, you must believe that transformation is possible AND participate fully!’

I just posted that quote on my Facebook page yesterday. I try to keep quotes like that on my fridge & around my apartment just to remind me to keep a positive outlook. The way we think can alter our destiny. So with that in mind, I’m determined to believe that I can achieve my weight loss goals. To that end, I had an absolutely fabulous workout with my trainer this morning. He’s really taking it to the next level with me. I’m not getting as much rest between sets, I’m using heavier weights & I’m doing more difficult exercises. I was really sweating this morning. I also did just under an hour of cardio at the gym yesterday. I hope to get in at least 2 or 3 more workouts for the week.

A couple of blogs posts ago, I shared my co-worker Trey’s 150 pound weight loss success story with you. One of the bits of advice Trey gave me is to use an app for my Blackberry called The Fat Secret…

I actually just downloaded the app to my Blackberry today. If you don’t have a Blackberry, The Fat Secret app is also available for free on the Android, iPhone, Facebook, iGoogle, Firefox and on their website RIGHT HERE. So that’s where I’ll be keeping track of my eating, calories & activity. Here’s some of what I’ve been eating lately…

A shake made with chocolate soy milk & strawberries, along with half a whole grain bagel with lowfat cream cheese.

Yogurt & a fiber breakfast bar. I’ve also taken to mixing slivers of almonds into my yogurt…yummo!

Steel cut oatmeal with rasberries & almonds. Btw, I normally make the oatmeal with water, but I made it with milk this go round. It was really good. I also normally only put raisins in my oatmeal, but it was a really good & tasty change to add almonds and rasberries.

Spinach & grilled chicken salad.

Jello. For some really healthy & quick meal ideas, be sure to keep scrolling down to past blog posts. And be sure to bookmark my blog & check back on my weight loss progress regularly :-)

Here Are Some 5-Minute Meals For A Flat Belly Just In Time For Summer!

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

I’ll probably never have a flat belly like that…even with surgery, lol! But a girl can try, right?! I know a lot of us are about to kick our routines into high gear with our diets & exercise in preparation for the summer. I believe in cleanses & detoxes as ways to clean out our systems & to promote good health, but it’s just not healthy to cleanse & detox for months at a time in order to try & lose weight. Unfortunately, that’s what lots of people do this time of year. Instead, we should eat healthy, balanced meals that nourish our bodies. I headed over to AOL’s That’s Fit blog and got about 28 healthy meals & snacks that promote healthy weight loss with an emphasis on getting rid of belly fat. American Idol Season 9 Top 12 Revealed: 4 More Voted Off!

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

That’s American Idol’s Season 9 Top 16. Tonight, 4 of those contestants were voted off, as the Top 12 were revealed! Here are the contestants who went home tonight:

Katelyn Epperly

Todrick Hall

Alex Lambert &

Lilly Scott

I can say that I think that each & every one of the contestants voted off tonight was truly talented. They didn’t connect with the audience enough for one reason or another, but they’re all truly talented. And not to hate on Tim Urban, but each of the contestants voted off are head & shoulders more talented than he is. He had a really good performance last night, so that may have helped. That…and the Vote For The Worst People, lol. And it’s sad to see Todrick leave after he really had a good performance last night. But hey, he’s already proven he’s a success because he’s starred on Broadway with Fantasia! So Idol just gave him a little added exposure. And Alex was so frustrating because while he had one of the most unique voices in the competition, he also consistently had the weakest performances. So he just needs to work on his stage presence & stage fright. Sad to see Katelyn & Lilly go as well. With that, The Season 9 Top 12 is revealed:

Didi Benami

Siobhan Magnus

Paige Miles

Casey James

Tim Urban

Lee Dewyze

Crystal Bowersox

Michael Lynche

Lacey Brown

Aaron Kelly

Andrew Garcia &

Katie Stevens

I believe the Top 12 Party happens tonight as well. Here’s what’s in store for us on American Idol next week:

Tuesday, March 16th

The Top 12 finalists – six boys and six girls – take the stage to perform LIVE for the nation! After the performances, it is once again up to America to vote.

Wednesday, March 17th

The Top 12 finalists find out who is safe and who will be sent home.

American Idol Gets The Shelley Wade Treatment: Which Guy Blew Me Away Tonight?!

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

The Top 8 Guys take the stage tonight in an effort to make it into the Top 12. Up first…

Lee Dewyze: Wow, I would never have expected any of the contestants to choose Owl City’s “Fireflies” to perform. It’s a nice current song for him to sing. The beauty about this song is that it’s so different, but Lee sang it like he sings everything else. On the one hand, it’s good because he’s being true to who he is as an artist. But on the other hand, he kind of took away the uniqueness of the song. It was just an okay performance for me. Randy felt it was a strange song choice, but he liked that Lee made it his own. Ellen liked that he made the song rock-ish, but did notice a few pitch problems. She liked him overall though. Kara felt that he looked confident, which is an improvement over the last few weeks. She also thought he made the song better with his rendition. She didn’t feel it was his best moment, but very solid. Simon said there was nothing to rave about during the performance and that he thinks that Lee is better than the performance he gave tonight. But he also said that he likes the improvements that Lee has made over the last 3 weeks.

Alex Lambert: This “Trouble” song by Ray Lamontagne is a perfect song for Alex’s voice! The soulfulness of the song brings out the uniqueness of his voice well. So he sounds good singing it, but because his stage presence is so boring, I didn’t feel the soul or the trouble. He seemed very nervous. Randy thought it was a good song choice, but that his performance was lackluster. Ellen says that he gets better every week consistently. She also said that she likes his sweetness & demeanor, but that he needs a little more confidence. Agreed! Kara said the only thing standing in the way of Alex winning is him. She says he has so much talent, but he’s still stiff & not vulnerable. Simon says that Alex has never relaxed & had a good time on the show. He said that he’s got a good distinct voice, but he needs to let go to perform well.

Tim Urban: He sang Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah”. Ya know…this is the 1st time that I didn’t think that Tim sounded terrible. He doesn’t have the talent that Alex has, but he sings his song with feeling much better than Alex does. This was a good performance for him. Decent. Randy thinks he did a pretty good job. Ellen got up, gave him a hug & told him that it was fantastic! Wow. She gave him a hug because she felt that she’s been so harsh with him over the last few weeks. And rightly so…he was terrible the last few weeks…but he was better tonight. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a judge get on stage to hug a contestant during judging! Kara felt that it was an honest performance. She said that she thought Tim would be gone from the show by now, but that she feels he’s in it now. Simon thought it was a smart song choice and by far Tim’s strongest performance in the competition so far. Again, I thought this was a good performance by Tim, but I can’t help but to think about all the contestants who were far more talented than him, but didn’t make it past Hollywood Week. It’s not fair.

Andrew Garcia: He’s singing “Genie In A Bottle” by Christina Aguilera. I like that Andrew chooses songs by women because we would never expect it. His rendition of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” during Hollywood Week was so amazing, that he hasn’t been able to live up to it since then. He sounds good singing this X-Tina though. Great voice & very likeable! Randy thought the song choice was very interesting, but it didn’t quite work for him. He says that the performance had no range to it. Ellen thought it was a great song choice & that people will love it. But she also felt that he waited too long to make the song sound exciting during the performance. Kara thinks that Andrew peaked too early when he wowed us during Hollywood Week. She felt that tonight, he was fighting with the rhythm of the guitar & she couldn’t hear the melody or him until the end. She said she likes him & thinks he’s great, but that it just wasn’t great tonight. Simon agrees with Kara & also said that Andrew’s performance of this song seemed a bit desperate. He says that he’s got a cool voice & is a good guy, but is still going backwards in the competition instead of improving.

Casey James: He sang “You’ll Think Of Me” by Keith Urban. I really like Casey. He always seems authentic & real when he sings to me. I didn’t like his performance so much last week, but he really sounds good tonight. This is a good song for his voice & for his style. This guy is the Chris Daughtry of this season to me…he may not win it all, but I feel he’ll go on to be a huge star. Randy felt the song was a safe choice. He felt that Casey’s more edgy than the song. Ellen thought he sounded great & that it was a great song choice. Kara says she’s back on he Casey train & that it was a better performance than last week’s. But she also said that Casey was missing the spark in his performance tonight. Simon felt it was Casey’s 2nd best performance of the season. He said it was a sincere performance & that he sounded great, but that it wasn’t memorable.

Aaron Kelly: He sang Lonestar’s “I’m Already There”. Aaron sounded a little nervous in the beginning, but seemed to get his confidence right afterwards. There are a few off notes, but he sounds good. Good performance overall. Randy says that Aaron has the makings of a great artist & that he’s improving. He says there’s still work to do, but job well done. Ellen says that Aaron has the confidence of a 30-year-old (he’s 16). She says that she loves him & knows he has a great voice, but she just doesn’t feel the performance was terrific because it wasn’t a great song for him. Kara says that she loves Aaron and the fact that he comes out & gives it his all on stage every week. But because he’s 16, the song’s subject matter was too old & heavy for him. Simon, on the other hand, says that Kara’s comments were complete & utter rubbish. Lol! He says that it was the right type of song for Aaron. He said it wasn’t a great vocal, but that Aaron had great emotion during the performance.

Todrick Hall: He sang Queen’s “Somebody To Love”. Wow, he’s singing some really high notes! I think this is a gutsy song choice. He’s definitely talented. Loved that last note of the song! However, parts of the song were uneventful for me. But that last note sorta redeemed him! Randy says that Todrick is back! He says that this was one of the best vocals he’s heard all night & the last couple of weeks! Ellen says that Todrick was a brave young man for singing that song & that he did a good job! Kara said that it was really good singing, but she felt that it was a little dramatic for her. But she did love the singing. Simon agreed with me & said that the performance was good in parts. But he said that what Todrick did tonight was tell us all who he is as an artist once & for all…a Broadway singer. Simon said it was a good song choice & that it may have saved him from being voted off.

And finally…

Michael Lynche: He sang “This Woman’s Work” by Maxwell. Wow, watching this linebacker looking guy standing on stage singing such a high note is surprising! He sounds really good. This song is such a departure from the guitar performances that we had gotten so used to him singing in the beginning. I loved all the notes he hit in the song & I loved his stage presence. Good, solid performance! Randy said the performance was dope & was blown away by the last note! Ellen thought the performance was so beautiful & that Michael is the one to beat now! And OMG, Kara’s crying! One the one hand, I feel her cuz I’m a girl too. But on the other hand, I feel like she’s being kinda corny! Lol. Needless to say, she felt that he was amazing! Simon—after hugging Kara—said that Michael’s performance was so needed tonight. He said that it wasn’t only the best performance of the night, but the best performance of the live shows so far!

And there you have it! Wow, what a nice, high note to end the show on! I enjoyed Big Mike’s performance last week, but tonight was the 1st time that he won my vote! Results show…tomorrow! We’ll find out which 4 contestants go home & which contestants move on to the Top 12! Also on the show tomorrow, Season Eight finalists Scott MacIntyre and Matt Giraud perform the Billy Joel classic hit “Tell Her About It”!

I Have 4 Months To Get Into My Bikini…Check Out What I’m Doing Here, Plus Get These Healthy Breakfast Recipes!

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

These last fews days have just been pristine and gorgeous here in the Tri-State Area! The rain’s coming tomorrow & lasting through the weekend, so I’m happy I got out and took advantage of the lovely weather. I hung out in Bernardsville, New Jersey, this past Sunday. As you can see from the picture above, it was a really pretty day. I got my exercise in yesterday by taking a brisk walk along the Hoboken waterfront. Not only did it look nice outside, but it was so warm that I didn’t have to wear a jacket! And I was so proud of myself…not only did I walk longer than I used to, but I also didn’t stop & rest as much as I used to when I walked! My fitness level & stamina have definitely increased since I’ve been working out with the trainer.

I’ve been working out with my trainer twice a week mostly. He had schedule conflicts Monday, so I’ll be seeing him again Friday. That’s when he’ll take my body fat measurement to see if I’ve improved that number since I’ve been working out with him the last 6 weeks or so. I’ll also be sure to take another “after” picture Friday. Hopefully you’ll see a difference from now & a month ago. I can definitely feel a difference in the way my clothes fit me & I see a difference when I look in the mirror. I also went to the mall last week to try on some clothes. I didn’t go to shop, but to see if I’ve made progress. Good news…I’ve gone down a dress size! But of course, I’ll have to up my game since there are only 4 months left for me to fit into a bikini by the 4th of July. I’ll have to make a bigger effort to work out a little harder and to streamline my eating more. Be sure to bookmark my blog & check back regularly for my progress. Here are pics of some of the foods I’ve been eating. Keep scrolling down because I’ll share some healthy breakfast recipes with you since breakfast is so integral to losing weight & leading a healthy life style…

American Idol Gets The Shelley Wade Treatment: Top 8 Girls Perform!

AI 9 Top 8 Girls

The American Idol Season 9 seems to be steamrolling along. The competition’s down to 16. The Top 8 Girls perform tonight…

Katie Stevens 3

Katie Stevens: She took the judges’ advice & chose a younger song more fitting for her image & age…Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway”. For some reason, Katie didn’t sound good singing this one. Which surprises me because Katie has such a gorgeous voice. This song just wasn’t fitting for her. Randy agrees that it was the wrong song choice & that it’s a difficult task to live up to Kelly Clarkson’s original version of it. Ellen, on the other hand, feels that it was a good song choice. However, she said that Katie didn’t sing the song with feeling or personality. Kara says that Katie has a great voice, but that she doesn’t know herself as an artist and didn’t sing the song well enough to stand out. Simon likes that Katie has taken the judges’ suggestions & advice, but agrees that Katie doesn’t quite know herself as an artist yet.

Siobhan Magnus 3

Siobhan Magnus: The judges raved about Siobhan last week, but I wasn’t as impressed. Tonight, she sang “House of The Rising Sun” by The Animals. I actually like her more tonight than I did last week. Some of her notes & breathing in the beginning were off, but she sounded really pretty singing it for the most part. Randy loves that she takes risks & chances. Ellen says that Siobhan is why she loves music because it’s supposed to move you. She feels that Siobhan is spectacular. Kara feels that she’s unique & different. Simon, however, wasn’t such a fan of tonight’s performance. He says that her clothes & performance were a bit weird for him. He said that he was under impressed.

Lacey Brown 3

Lacey Brown: She sang “The Story” by Brandi Carlile. Now this song is perfect for Lacey’s voice! She sounds pretty & effortlessly moving. This was my favorite performance by her this season so far. Randy felt the song was boring & sleepy, but that this was Lacey’s best performance he’s seen in a while. Ellen also felt that it was her best performance to date & that Lacey has a distinctive voice. I’m amazed that the judges are using some of the same words that I’m using to describe the performances tonight. Kara just said that Lacey’s singing was effortless too! Kara thought it was a brilliant song choice. Simon didn’t love the song, but he did love the way Lacey sang it. However, he says he still hasn’t heard the best song choice for her yet.

Katelyn Epperly 3

Katelyn Epperly: Her song choice was “I Feel The Earth Move” by Carole King. Last week Katelyn played the piano, this week she’s playing the keyboards. I think she sounds pretty singing this one, but I’m wondering if the judges will feel that it’s a little like a cruise ship performance as Simon’s been known to say before, lol! But in my opinion, she sounded great and sang the song with lots of feeling & soul. Randy liked her hair & her playing the keyboards. However, he felt that her performance wasn’t authentic & that there was nothing about it that stood out. Ellen doesn’t think it was a good song to wow the crowd and that the performance just wasn’t enough. Kara felt that Katelyn was just going through the motions and didn’t connect with the audience the way Carole King does. Simon also said he liked her hair. However, he said that her performance was kind of like request night on a Friday night at a restaurant if she was working there. Wow. That’s kind of like the cruise ship line, right? Lol. But seriously, Kara & Simon seemed to feel like Katelyn performed the song as if she didn’t really care enough about winning the competition.

Did Benami 3

Didi Benami: It’s been a rough competition for Didi so far this season. She’s one of my favorite contestants since Hollywood Week, but she just hasn’t connected with the judges well. Hopefully she’ll do well tonight. She sang “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac. This is one of my favorite songs of all time. Stevie Knicks has a very different & unique voice, so the way she originally sang the song really stood out. Didi has a really pretty voice, but the performance as a whole just didn’t stand out. It was kind of flat and she didn’t perform it with much feeling. I’m sure she was scared to death onstage after the judges ripped her a new one after last week’s performance. But she really should have chosen a song that made her stand out more. Randy felt the performance was a whole lot better than last week’s. He wasn’t totally impressed, but does want to see her back on the show next week. Ellen thought she did a good job & complimented her for her courage to get back onstage with a smile after the judges were so harsh to her last week. Kara says that this performance by Didi was one of her favorite moments on the show so far this season! Simon agreed with Kara! He says that it was head & shoulders over anything else they heard tonight! He said it was a brilliant performance! I’m so happy for Didi! It wasn’t the best performance for me, but I’m so happy that the judges generally loved her tonight because I know it lifted her spirits. Yay Didi!

Paige Miles 3

Paige Miles: The judges weren’t particularly happy with Paige’s performance of Kelly Clarkson last week, but I thought she did an amazing job. Tonight she’s singing the Charlie Chaplin classic “Smile”. My favorite rendition of this song is by Nat “King” Cole—one of my all-time favorite artists. I can’t tell whether Paige is nervous, or if the tremble in her voice is her vibrato. She doesn’t sound bad, but the performance was kind of boring. I’ve heard her sing lots better than this, so I’m pretty disappointed that she didn’t perform it well. Randy didn’t think the performance worked at all. Ellen said that the song is supposed to be inspiring & uplifting, but that Paige sang it sad & heavy. She felt that Paige didn’t’ show us her great personality tonight & that it was a poor song choice. Kara felt that it was all wrong. Simon said it was a horrible choice of song. He says it’s a shame because she’s got a great voice, but has made bad decisions & that this could be the end of the road for her.

Crystal Bowersox 3

Crystal Bowersox: She chose to sing “Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman. I’m a big Tracy Chapman fan and I think this is just the type of song that’s perfect for Crystal’s voice & image. Her performance was bluesy, rocker & soulful all at the same time. Great performance. Unlike a lot of the other contestants, Crystal really knows who she is as an artist. Randy says he loved everything about the performance & that he loves her. Ellen says it’s the best performance of the night. Kara says it was a great song choice & that Crystal knows herself as an artist. Simon says that Crystal is 100 million billion percent gonna make it into the Top 12 next week. He says that she’s got confidence & is the one everyone has to beat. He says it’s Crystal’s to lose.

Lilly Scott 3

Lilly Scott: She sang “I Fall to Pieces” by the legendary Patsy Cline. Wow, this is a song choice that I would have never expected! I like that she chose something unexpected. I like Lilly’s individuality, but I’ve heard her singing better. She was good, but didn’t stand out as much as Crystal. Randy felt that it was a good song choice and performance. Ellen loved the song choice & Lilly’s originality of style. Kara says that Lilly made Patsy Cline feel current. Simon says that Lilly was brave choosing that song, but that it didn’t have a wow factor. And since the contestants that get voted off this week won’t be in the Top 12, he felt that it was a risky performance for her.

The girls were kinda mediocre today. There were about 3 really standout performances, but the rest weren’t impressive. My votes tonight go to Lacey & Crystal. The Top 8 Guys perform tomorrow night. Talk to ya then!

Who’ll Win Oscars This Weekend? Peter Panagos Picks The Winners @ The Shelley Wade Treatment!

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Oscars Hosts

Love Steve Martin…love Alec Baldwin…Super excited to see them both host The Oscars this weekend! The Shelley Wade Treatment’s Film Critic/Movie Fanatic Peter Panagos shares his Oscar pics below!

Best Picture

“Avatar”
“The Blind Side”
“District 9″
“An Education”
“The Hurt Locker”
“Inglourious Basterds”
“Precious”
“A Serious Man”
“Up”
“Up in the Air”

Avatar

Who Should Win: “Avatar” has changed the way we watch movies. It’s a massive achievement for film and should take the statue.

Who Will Win: It’s a two-film race between “Avatar” and “The Hurt Locker.” I enjoyed “The Hurt Locker” but lets be honest, in ten years the film we will all still be talking about is “Avatar.” It’s the best film of the year.

Best Director

Kathryn Bigelow
“The Hurt Locker”

James Cameron
“Avatar”

Lee Daniels
“Precious”

Jason Reitman
“Up in the Air”

Quentin Tarantino
“Inglourious Basterds”

James Cameron

Who Should Win: I would love to see Quentin Tarantino take this award home, but he has very little chance in a year of great directors. James Cameron created a new world for us to see in “Avatar.” Cameron created a world full of culture and history and even created a brand new language! I can’t speak highly enough of “Avatar” and I hope James Cameron wins a well deserved Oscar Sunday night.

kathryn-bigelow

Who Will Win: One of my Oscar rules is that the film that wins “Best Director” will also win “Best Picture.” This year I am going to stray away from that theory due to the praise that “The Hurt Locker” has received. I believe James Cameron’s ex wife Kathryn Bigelow will be the first woman ever to win the “Best Director” award.

Best Actor

Jeff Bridges
“Crazy Heart”

George Clooney
“Up in the Air”

Colin Firth
“A Single Man”

Morgan Freeman
“Invictus”

Jeremy Renner
“The Hurt Locker”

Jeff Bridges

Who Should Win: I am not a believer in “Well, he deserves it after all these years” or “It’s their time.” I believe you can only be given an award if your performance in the movie is worthy. After saying that, I still believe Jeff Bridges deserves the Oscar for his amazing performance as “Bad” Blake. I thought Jeremy Renner was great, but for him, this nomination IS his Oscar.

Who Will Win: Jeff Bridges will win. It is a lock.

Best Actress

Sandra Bullock
“The Blind Side”

Helen Mirren
“The Last Station”

Carey Mulligan
“An Education”

Gabourey Sidibe
“Precious”

Meryl Streep
“Julie & Julia”

Gabourey Sidibe

Who Should Win: This is the category I am much more outspoken about. I am sorry, but I was not a fan of “The Blind Side.” I was even less of a fan of the prohibitive favorite Sandra Bullock in “The Blind Side”. I did not think she was convincing what-so-ever in that role. Meryl Streep, the other favorite, is obviously one of the greatest actresses of all time. But there was nothing special about “Julie & Julia.” I would love to see Gabourey Sidibe win for “Precious.” Her performance was heartbreaking and I think it would be as big an upset as when “Crash” beat “Brokeback Mountain”.

Sandra Bullock

Who Will Win: As much as it bothers me, since she has already won the “Golden Globe” and “SAG” awards, I believe Sandra Bullock will edge out Meryl and win her first Academy Award.

Best Supporting Actor

Matt Damon
“Invictus”

Woody Harrelson
“The Messenger”

Christopher Plummer
“The Last Station”

Stanley Tucci
“The Lovely Bones”

Christoph Waltz
“Inglourious Basterds”

Christophe Waltz

Who Should Win: The Academy loves giving this award to villains, and in 2009 there was no better villain than the multi-lingual Christoph Waltz in “Inglourious Basterds.” Christoph successfully performed a terrifying, yet charming Nazi. Not an easy accomplishment. He deserves this award.

Who Will Win: Christoph Waltz should be polishing up his speech. This is the 100% lock of the night.

Best Supporting Actress

Penelope Cruz
“Nine”

Vera Farmiga
“Up in the Air”

Maggie Gyllenhaal
“Crazy Heart”

Anna Kendrick
“Up in the Air”

Mo’nique
“Precious”

Monique

Who Should Win: Short and sweet. Mo’nique was the only nominee whose performance stood out for days in your mind after seeing the movie. A perfect villain disguised as a mother who should be recognized Sunday night.

Who Will Win: Mo’nique has it in the bag.

The 82nd Academy Awards air this Sunday at 8pm Eastern Time on ABC. Be sure to check back here to compare Peter’s picks with the actual winners! Keep reading for Peter’s reviews of a couple of movies out now…

Cop Out Poster

Cop Out (R) ★★1/2

Starring: Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Seann William Scott, Michelle Trachtenberg, Adam Brody, Rashida Jones

Director: Kevin Smith
Running Time: 110 minutes

By Peter Panagos / March 1, 2010

Before I start I would like to come clean and say Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) is probably my favorite filmmaker, so anything I say is most likely albeit inadvertently biased. “Cop Out” marks the first movie Smith has directed without writing…and for a director credited mostly for his brilliant, witty dialogue and panned for his directorial style, this could be a problem. “Cop Out” is a loud, childish, cliche-ridden, buddy cop movie that most women will hate. It is also a loud, childish, cliche ridden, buddy cop movie that most men will love.

Bruce Willis (You know who Bruce Willis is) and Tracy Morgan (30 Rock) play two longtime NYPD partners Jimmy Monroe and Paul Hodges on a hunt to find a rare baseball card that was stolen from Jimmy. This baseball card is important to Jimmy not only for it’s sentimental value, but also because he was counting on selling it in order to pay for his daughter Ava’s (Trachtenberg) dream wedding. Seann William Scott (American Pie) plays the stoner/thief who stole Jimmy’s card and sold it to a drug dealer/baseball memorabilia collector. While Jimmy is hell-bent on finding this baseball card, Paul is pre-occupied with the notion that his wife (Rashida Jones) may be cheating on him. Jimmy and Paul end up enlisting Seann William Scott’s “services” in retrieving the baseball card. Bruce Willis plays a New York cop better than anyone else and no matter how down on their luck his character is, you always end up saying ‘Man, he’s so cool.’ In my opinion, Tracy Morgan, given the right material can be one of the funniest people in the world. “Cop Out”, which was written by Robb and Mark Cullen, doesn’t always provide that material. But when it does, boy does Tracy deliver.

There is nothing that you haven’t seen before in “Cop Out”. Whether it’s that Jimmy and Paul are yelled at by their boss, or they love to play good cop/bad cop, or the car chases and shootouts in public places…If you were a fan Steven Segal movies, “Bad Boys,” then I think “Cop Out” is for you. My biggest problem with the movie is that I can’t figure out if the movie is trying to pay homage to 80’s buddy cop films or is it trying to satire them? All in all, it was an enjoyable way to waste an hour and fifty minutes, and isn’t that the whole point of going to a movie?

The Crazies Poster

The Crazies (R) ★★1/2
Starring: Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Danielle Panabaker, Joe Anderson
Director: Breck Eisner
Running Time: 101 minutes

By Peter Panagos / March 1, 2010

It’s in the water! No, not a shark but there is something in the drinking water that is turning the citizens of Ogden Marsh, Iowa crazy. I say crazy and not zombies because contrary to popular belief, these are not zombies. Also, thats what they’re referred to as by the military in the film. “The Crazies” is a remake of George A. Romero’s 1973 film of the same name.

Timothy Olyphant (Hitman, Go) plays town Sheriff David Dutton who, with his deputy Russell Clank, played by Joe Anderson (Across the Universe), attends opening day at a local school baseball game. When Rory, a recovering alcoholic, turns up in the outfield yielding a shotgun seemingly drunk, Sheriff Dave attempts to diffuse the situation without much success. After the autopsy of Rory shows he has a blood alcohol of 0.0, suspicion arises. Town doctor and Sheriff Dave’s wife Judy (Radha Mitchell), also starts noticing something suspicious when a worried wife brings in her husband who she claims has been acting peculiar. I’m sure by now you’re starting to get the gist of it. The Sheriff and his Deputy start investigating and well, without giving too much away, it has something to do with the town’s water supply. Clichés start to pour out as the town’s Mayor refuses to shut down the water “based on a hunch” (How many times have we heard that?). Its up to the Sheriff, his wife, his deputy and his wife’s friend played, by Danielle Panabaker (who’s whole role could have been cut out of the movie and nothing would have changed), to escape not only the “Crazies”, but the military who have quarantined the town using well…not so nice methods.

“The Crazies” is not a terrible film by any means. If you’re a fan of the genre, then you will enjoy the gore, occasional humor (mostly from Joe Anderson) and action that this film has to offer. I enjoyed it, but to be honest, my enjoyment of the genre seems to be wearing out with each film. If “The Crazies” came out next year, I probably would have given it half a star less. Although, if it had came out last year, I probably would have given it an extra half star.
