AI 9 Top 12 Guys

The Idol season got off to an interesting start last night as the Top 12 Girls took to the stage. The judges have alluded to the point that they think it’s possibly time for another female Idol winner, but no one female stood out last night as a clear-cut favorite. Let’s see if the guys do better tonight. I read something about an online gambling site listing Andrew Garcia as the favorite to win Idol this season, with Ashley Rodriguez and Didi Benami coming in at 2nd and 3rd. I really like Andrew, but you can’t rule out other standout talents like Todrick Hall & Jermaine Sellers. As far as the girls favored to win on the gambling site, go back to my blog yesterday and you’ll see that Ashley and Didi are two of my favorite girls this season. I understand choosing favorites, it comes with the Idol territory. But when you factor in variables like the American public’s vote & the Vote For The Worst nation, it’s way too early to know exactly who’s gonna win the whole thing.

Wow, I like the serious reality check Simon just gave to the contestants…’If you lose it or forget the words tonight, your career is over.’ And he said it just as deadpan and serious as it sounds. Wow, lol. What a way to lift the guys’ confidence before they perform for millions of people, Simon! Alright, let’s get into it, the Top 12 Guys! First up…

Todrick Hall

24-year-old Writer, Singer & Dancer Todrick Hall of Arlington, Texas: First off, Todrick’s got a lot to prove being the triple threat that he already is. Also, he’s coming to us with a lot more experience than many of the other guys…he’s already starred on Broadway with former American Idol Winner Fantasia in “The Color Purple.” Todrick was one of my favorites since his initial audition…he’s got a lot of talent. However, I was kinda turned off by him and his fellow Destiny’s Wild members for group performances during Hollywood Week. And what turned me off about them was how arrogant they came across. Total turnoff. But I’ll wipe the slate clean and give him another chance tonight since he’s my fellow Texan ;-) He performed Kelly Clarkson’s “Since You Been Gone”. I have to say that I’m totally impressed that he had the guts to cover this song…I would have NEVER expected this from him! He totally changed the song up and his performance was cute and full of attitude, but it wasn’t as catchy as Kelly Clarkson’s version. But again, I give him a lot of credit for having the courage to perform this AND make it completely his own. Ellen had a huge smile on her face and she loved his song choice and performance. However, she didn’t like his singing of the chorus. Randy didn’t like the fact that Todrick changed the song so much that he wasn’t immediately familiar with it. He also feels that Todrick just needs to concentrate on his great singing voice and not be so concerned with impressing us with the performance. Kara agrees that Todrick is a strong enough singer that he didn’t have to change the arrangement so much. She did, however, like that Todrick took a risk. Simon says that he was all for taking a risk, but felt that Todrick completely murdered the original song and that it verged on “stupid.”

Aaron Kelly

16-year-old high school student Aaron Kelly of Sonestown, Pennsylvania: He sang Rascal Flatts’ “Here Comes Goodbye.” One of the 1st things that came to my mind as I hear Aaron singing this one was that his voice kinda reminded me of David Archuletta’s. A few of Aaron’s notes were off, but he’s got a pretty nice voice. Simon said that baring in mind it was his first live show, it was actually quite a good performance. However, Simon feels that Aaron’s not confident enough to know why he’s even on Idol. He feels that he’s a good singer, very likeable and very cute, but that he has to take control of the song. But Simon believes that Aaron will still be on the show next week. Kara says that Aaron’s her favorite kind of contestant because he has no idea how great his raw, natural talent is and that he’ll get better throughout the competition. Randy feels that Aaron wasn’t strong starting off, but that he’s got a strong voice for 16. Ellen said that she thinks he’ll be on the show for a long time this season and that she loves how humble he is.

Jermaine Sellers

27-year-old Church Singer Jermaine Sellers of Joliet, Illinois: Jermaine is one of my favorite guys this season. I like everything about him so far…his gorgeous voice and the way he’s dedicated his life to taking care of his mother, a story we found out during his initial audition. Tonight, Jermaine sang “Get Here” by Oleta Adams. This song showcases Jermaine’s voice very well melodically. And I like how he started off singing very subtly, but then got stronger towards the end…he took us on a mini journey. Ellen says that she loves his voice and look, but says the he performed the song as opposed to feeling the song. Randy felt the song was a weird song choice for him and that he should have chosen something more current. Kara felt that Jermaine wanted to prove to everyone his vocal abilities instead of just singing the song the right way. She also felt the song was a little old for him. Simon said that it was the kind of song that if he were singing at a cocktail bar, someone in their 50s would request to hear it. He also felt that Jermaine was screaming and was over the top at one point in the song. He also said that Jermaine totally blew his opportunity with this performance, much to the other judges’ dismay. I’ll also have to disagree with Simon on that one. But to his credit, Simon said that Jermaine can do better. So he does feel like he has talent.

Tim Urban

20-year-old Tim Urban of Duncanville, Texas: Tim wasn’t originally in the Top 24, but is now on the show courtesy of another contestant’s disqualifying. Tonight he sang One Republic’s “Apologize.” My 1st thought was, ‘terrible song choice.” This song does nothing to prove that Tim should have been given a 2nd chance to be on the show. Hate to say it about a fellow Texan, but I wasn’t impressed with the performance at all. Simon started off by congratulating Tim for making it back onto the show, but agreed with me that the judges absolutely made the right choice the 1st time around by not letting him into the Top 24…ZING! Lol. Simon felt that the vocals and song version were weak. He also says that Tim didn’t come across as a natural performer and that his voice isn’t good enough. Kara said that the music just overpowered and swallowed Tim up. She felt that his acoustic performance during Hollywood Week showcased his voice better because he wasn’t buried under the music like tonight. Randy agreed that it was the wrong song for Tim and that none of it worked. Randy also feels that Tim is better than that. Ellen feels that Tim may get a lot of votes because he looks adorable, but that his voice wasn’t strong enough for the song. I think he’ll also get some sympathy votes since he was looking all sad when Simon critiqued him. I can imagine that the Vote For The Worst people will be fully behind Tim just to throw a wrench into the equation. But let me not speak so soon…the night is still young and someone else just may be worse than he was.

Joe Munoz

20-year-old Student Joe Munoz of Huntington Park, California: David Archuletta came to mind again as I watched Joe’s opening piece because like David, Joe is soft spoken. Let’s see if he can make it as far in the competition as David did. He sang “You and I Both” by Jason Mraz. It’s a good song choice for Joe and showcases his pretty voice well. However, I felt that his voice got a little shaky towards the middle and wasn’t quite as strong as the beginning. I also love how pretty his smile is when he looks into the camera. Ellen felt that he had a great stage presence and that he was very comfortable. Randy thinks that he has a great voice, but it wasn’t the best song choice for him. Kara liked the song choice, but felt that his singing was off during the chorus. However, she feels that his vocals have been the best so far tonight. Simon says that it was an okay, safe, forgettable performance and that Joe failed to convince us of his star power during his time onstage. Sidebar…Joe is gonna score a lot of votes tonight from the Spanish speaking audience since he shouted out to his family in Mexico in Spanish…it may not have been a calculated move, but it was very smart of him nonetheless.

Tyler Grady

20-year-old College Student Tyler Grady of Nazareth, Pennsylvania: We found out during the auditions that Tyler’s originally a drummer, but has been wanting to come from behind the drums to be a lead singer. This is his chance. He sang “American Woman” by The Guess Who and later, Lenny Kravitz. When I watch Tyler, I can’t help but think of Idol Season 7 contestant Michael Johns because Michael always reminded me of Jim Morrison and Tyler models much of his 70s style after Jim Morrison. It was a cool song for Tyler to sing, but the performance didn’t really capture my attention or stand out for me. Simon said that the plus side was that people would remember the performance, but the down side is people will remember it for the wrong reasons. He feels that Tyler’s whole image is that of someone who’s gone to “pretend to be a rockstar school” and is very clichéd. He also feels that Tyler’s style gimmick is overshadowing his vocals, which isn’t good since Idol is basically a vocal competition. Kara agrees with Simon and feels that Tyler focuses too much on Jim Morrison and the 70s and wants to see him do something more modern. Randy also agrees that it was style over substance and should be original. Ellen feels that Tyler is going through the motions and needs to feel the performance and work on his vocals. If he listens to the critiques and learns from them, it’ll be interesting to see how he changes up his style for next week…if he makes it that far.

Lee Dewyze

23-year-old Paint Sales Clerk Lee Dewyze of Mount Prospect, Illinois: He sang “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol. This is a nice, current (sort of) song selection for Lee that’s consistent with his style during Hollywood Week. Because of that, he stands out. However, the song does nothing for his voice. Like Simon said earlier, it’s a singing competition and I don’t hear particularly good singing from Lee tonight. Ellen felt it was a good song choice and that he’s got a distinctive sound, but feels that he screamed at times. Randy felt that the song choice was wrong and too Pop for Lee. He feels that Lee reminds him of David Cook and should do more Rock songs. Simon, on the other hand, felt that it was the best performance and that Lee’s got an authentically good voice. Wow, I’m totally not agreeing with Simon on this one.

John Park

21-year-old College Student John Park of Evanston, Illinois: Lol, I’m laughing watching the tape of John during the auditions when Shania Twain was so impressed with his voice. Fast forward to tonight and John feels that Shania is the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen in person and that he would propose to her if she would marry him! I mean, I think Shania’s beautiful and all, but I’m sure she looks even more beautiful to him because she raved about his great voice, lol! Anyway, John sang “God Bless The Child” by Billie Holiday. I remember John’s voice during auditions and he’s got a nice one, but this was a terrible song choice for him tonight. He sounds nervous, he’s doing too many runs and it just doesn’t showcase his voice well at all. I really feel that he jeopardized his chance of making it back next week with that bad song choice. Simon said that you have got to have an incredible voice to take on that song, but John doesn’t. He felt it was a pointless performance. Kara agrees with Simon. She says that John has a big voice, but that the performance was loungy and didn’t tell us what kind of artist John would be in the real world. Randy thinks that at one part of the song John’s voice sounded good, but that the song sounded old for him. Ellen didn’t like the song choice either, but liked the performance, thought he sounded great and wants to see him back on the show next week.

Michael Lynche

26-year-old Personal Trainer Michael Lynch of St. Petersburg, Florida. Why did I think this guy was from Queens, New York? Didn’t they say that at one point? Hmm. Anyway, he sang “This Love” by Maroon 5. Michael has a great voice and is always very comfortable onstage…but I always think of him as a wedding singer type. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but he doesn’t strike me as the next American Idol. I could totally envision being at a wedding reception and shaking my booty on the dance floor while he’s onstage singing. That would seriously be a good time, lol! Ellen loves his personality, feels it was a great song choice, but thought there were some pitch problems. Randy agrees with Ellen and loves the energy that Michael brings to the stage. Kara liked his energy and thought that there were some good things about his performance, but didn’t think it was outrageously great. Simon feels like Michael is like the “support act” before the “main act”. That’s kinda like what I was saying, right? Simon did say that Michael is better than his performance tonight and that he felt he didn’t give enough during the song.

Alex Lambert

19-year-old High School Student Alex Lambert of North Richland Hills, Texas: Wow, my fellow Texans are all over Season 9, yeah! With the last name “Lambert”, Alex has some big shoes to fill on Idol this season. He’s definitely not as flamboyant as that other Lambert guy who’s first name also begins with an A! Tonight, Alex sang “What A Wonderful World” by James Morrison. I love Alex’s unique voice. It’s definitely different from most of the guys we’ve heard tonight. It’s got a nice, raspy quality to it. To me, this was a really good song choice for him. He could stand to improve his stage performance, but he sounded good. Simon thought it was the most uncomfortable performance of the night. However, Simon does feel that Alex definitely has a good voice. Kara loves Alex’s voice tone and feels that Alex has great potential, but should believe in himself. Randy really likes Alex and his voice. Ellen likes that Alex is holding on to the mullet, lol! She also thinks he’s adorable and likable. She also feels he needs more confidence, as she compared him to a banana that’s not ripe enough just yet! She’s so silly.

Casey James

27-year-old Musician Casey James of Fort Worth, Texas: Er um, did I mention that Texans are totally representin’ on Idol this season? Lol. This is the guy that Kara seems to like a lot, but is in total denial about it! He sang “Heaven” by Bryan Adams. Casey definitely has a good voice…it’s rock, yet country, yet soulful. This is a good song choice for his voice, but I’m wondering if the judges are gonna think it’s too old for him. Let’s see…Kara feels that he was little pitchy. That’s all she could get out while blushing. Ellen feels that he sounded great and says that her opinion doesn’t matter because he’s gonna get votes like crazy. I understand what Ellen’s saying since some girls will vote for Casey because he’s cute, but we shouldn’t just ignore the fact that this dude can REALLY sing. Randy likes Casey’s voice, swagger and thinks it was a great song choice. Kara composed herself enough to come back with another statement! She says that while Casey is eye candy, he’s also ear candy because he can sing, seriously! I’m glad she said that. Simon said that both he and Casey were cursed with good looks, lol! But kidding aside, he really liked the song choice and felt it was honest, sincere and likable.

And finally…

Andrew Garcia

24-year-old Stay-At-Home-Dad Andrew Garcia of Moreno Valley, California: As I said earlier, this guy is an early choice of some as a strong candidate to win Idol this year. But also like I said earlier, it’s way too early to predict. That said, I really like Alex a lot. He proved during the auditions and Hollywood Week that he’s got tons of talent. Let’s see how he does on the 1st night of performances for the guys. He sang “Sugar We’re Goin’ Down” by Fall Out Boy. I remember being at the beach the 1st time I heard this song in 2005, but I digress. I like that Andrew chooses songs that we would never expect him to sing. He sounds good. However, I felt that he could have made a better song choice. So many people are excited to see what he does this season and this song just did not live up to that excitement. To my point, Simon said that he was looking forward to Andrew’s performance more than any other tonight, but that he was disappointed. He thought the performance was too serious, too indulgent and didn’t stand out. He also said that Andrew’s got a great story, a fantastic recording voice, is a nice guy, but was forgettable tonight. Kara loved that Andrew took the risk of singing this song and version tonight, but that it was a strange arrangement. Randy agrees with Kara, but loves Andrew anyway. Ellen agrees that Andrew’s performance of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” during Hollywood Week will keep him on the show. She also likes his talent, but didn’t like tonight’s performance. Sidebar…that mention of Paula made me really feel like I miss her on Idol so far this season. Love Ellen, but still miss Paula :-(

And that does it for the Top 12 Guys. In my opinion, Casey James was really the only contestant that stood out for me tonight. We’ll find out which two Girls and which two Guys get voted off Thursday during the Results Show. Current Idol Kris Allen performs on the Results Show, along with Alison Iraheta.

“American Idol” Gets The Shelley Wade Treatment: The Top 12 Girls Perform!

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

AI_9_12_Girls

I’m really excited because after all the auditions and Hollywood Week, now we get down to the good part…the part where we—the people—have a say in which contestants go far or go home! For the next three weeks, the contestants will be performing songs from the Billboard charts. The Top 12 Girls perform tonight, the Top 12 Boys perform tomorrow and Thursday is the results show. As with my Idol blog from seasons past, during the show I’ll be writing notes of my opinions of the performances, then posting them on my blog after the final performance. First up…

Paige Miles

24-year-old Pre-School & After School teacher Paige Miles of Naples, Florida: We haven’t heard much about Paige so far this season, so it’s good to finally get to know her. She sang “All Right Now” by Free, which was originally a hit back in the summer of 1970. My immediate thought was that it was a pretty gutsy choice for her to perform this as her 1st song since it’s fast and something we wouldn’t expect from her. She’s got a really nice voice. In fact, Simon says that he feels she’s got the best voice of all the females on Idol this season. However, he didn’t like this as a song choice for her because he felt that it was ‘wedding singer’ like, lol! Kara, on the other hand, totally disagreed with Simon and thought the song choice was brilliant because Paige has such a soulful voice, but was able to pull off performing a rock song. Both Randy & Ellen agreed with some aspects of both Kara’s & Simon’s opinions. To me, it was a fun performance. She sounded good, but I’m sure another song would have showcased her talents more. Not bad though.

Ashley Rodriguez

22-year-old Student Ashley Rodriguez of Chelsea, Massachusetts: Since her audition, Ashley stood out to me as a serious contender for the title of “American Idol”. She’s got a gorgeous voice and she’s got a great look. She’s the total package already without help from the Idol experts. She sang “Happy” by Leona Lewis tonight. She sounded decent, but some of her notes were off. Kara agreed with me that some moments in the performance weren’t great. She also suggested that Ashley choose songs we wouldn’t expect from her in the future. Randy & Ellen agreed with Kara and also suggested that she would be compared to Leona Lewis and her big voice and that would shadow our opinion of Ashley’s talent. Simon thought that her performance was clumsy and that she could be in trouble on the show after tonight. Not such a good start for Ashley.

Janell Wheeler

24-year-old Wine Sales Rep. Janell Wheeler of Orlando, Florida: She sang “What About Love” by Heart. This is one of my favorite Heart songs. Ann Wilson has such a strong voice in the original, so you have to come strong when covering it. And although Janell has a nice natural voice, it wasn’t quite strong enough to live up to Ann’s version of the song. It sounded like she was a little nervous tonight too. Not a good choice of songs for her in my opinion. Randy agrees with me about the song choice. Ellen, however, liked the song choice, but did note that she heard some off notes. Simon says that she gave it 100 % effort, but only delivered 65% (zing! Lol). He didn’t like the song choice either, but thinks that she’ll survive this week. Kara also agrees that the song choice wasn’t a good one and that Janell’s voice didn’t stand up to Ann Wilson’s.

Lilly Scott

20-year-old Lilly Scott from Littleton, Colorado: She says that she’d been living out of her car for the past year, so Idol is a blessing for her. She sang “Fixing A Hole” by The Beatles. I think that this song choice was great for showcasing Lilly’s unique personality and voice. I wouldn’t have expected this song, but she sounded awesome singing it. So far in the show, her performance was my favorite. Ellen agrees with me and said that it was such a random song and that Lilly’s voice is distinct and standout. Ellen loved her! Wow, Simon agrees with me that Lilly’s was the best performance so far tonight…yay! However, he also said that he wasn’t feeling much star power from her, which prompted boos from the crowd! Kara said that Lilly’s believable, comfortable and that everyone would remember her tonight. Finally, Randy loved that Lilly sounded like an indy artist in that she was unique and didn’t sound like anyone else. Good start for Lilly!

Katelyn Epperly

19-year-old college student Katelyn Epperly of West Des Moines, Iowa: She sang “Oh! Darling” by The Beatles. Not one of the most popular Beatles songs, but this song was a really good one to showcase her voice…wow! She sounds nice and soulful singing it! Way to go Katelyn! And I agree with Simon that she was screaming some parts of the song. But he says she sounded good and that he likes her. Kara says that Katelyn really knows what she’s doing when she’s onstage. She also said that she wouldn’t have chosen that song for her, but that Katelyn changed the song up in a way that made it a good choice. Kara also commented on Katelyn’s look, saying that she prefers her more natural without all the lipstick and the makeover. Randy says that her look is just fine. Randy also says that he loves that Katelyn knows the real art of singing the tone and melody right. He feels that she can go places. Ellen said that she has a great voice and that the performance was interesting. But Ellen also basically said what Simon says about pushing her voice and screaming. But overall all, good critiques for Katelyn.

Haeley Vaughn

16-year-old high school student Haeley Vaughn of Fort Collins, Colorado: Haley’s such a perky kid that it kind of creeps Simon out, so it’ll be pretty interesting to see if she’ll be able to shake that image off. She also sang a song by The Beatles, “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.” This is one of the more popular songs by The Beatles, but Haeley was able to make it her own. I think she’s adorable, but I can see what Simon means about her perkiness. I mean, she doesn’t creep ME out, but I understand why it would creep him out since he’s so cranky most times. Lol. She sounded pretty decent, but some notes were so loud that it took the tenderness away from the original feeling of the song. Kara feels that she needs to work on improving the technical aspects of the performance, but that she loves Haeley’s energy and stage presence. Randy loves her unpredictability and boldness, but he also feels that she could work on hitting her notes better. Ellen says that she’s not so knowledgeable of technicalities, but loves Haley’s stage presence and the way that she shines. Simon, however, thought the performance was verging on terrible. He even compared her to a wind-up doll and said her performance was a complete and utter mess. But Simon’s opinion doesn’t surprise me all since he’s never been her biggest fan anyway. So the judges seem pretty mixed up about Haeley’s perfomance. I think she’ll be fine this week and won’t be voted off.

Lacey Brown

24-year-old Church Event Coordinator Lacey Brown of Amarillo, Texas: Lacey was cut after Hollywood Week last season, so she made it a little bit farther this season! She sang “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac. Sidebar…LOVE THIS SONG! If you haven’t watched my interview with legendary Fleetwood Mac founder Mick Fleetwood, head to The Shelley Wade Treatment section of this site to watch it now! I would think that this would be a great song choice for Lacey’s voice, but she sang lots of the notes incorrectly and she seemed a bit nervous. The original song—and even the Dixie Chicks’ remake of it—was so special, but Lacey’s version didn’t stand out as special at all for me. Randy thought it was the wrong song choice for her and that her performance was terrible. Ellen didn’t like the performance either and feels that Lacey is better than tonight’s performance. Simon felt her performance was depressing and boring. Kara says that the song choice was wrong as well and hopes that America gives her another chance. I, however, feel that she should be voted off because it was a terrible performance. I hate that I feel that way since she’s my fellow Texan though. Simon did throw in a compliment at the end saying that Lacey’s got nice eyes…not that her eyes have anything to do with her performance tonight, but okay.

Michelle Delamor

22-year-old Clothing Store worker Michelle Delamor of Miami, Florida: My 1st thought is that Michelle looks a little older than 22 because of her hair and makeup. Pretty girl though. She sang “Fallin’” by Alicia Keys. I always hate when people sing this song because they never seem to be able to rise to the occasion of the original. But Michelle sounded pretty decent singing it. She seemed like she was playing it a little safe though and not taking the risk of singing some of the high notes. It was an okay performance. I swear I said that before Ellen said it! She just said that Michelle’s performance was safe and that she can do better than that, but it was still amazing. Simon feels that she did very well and that it sounded close to the original, but not as good as the original. Simon says that there wasn’t one “wow” moment in performance, but that she looked great. Kara also says that she has a very commercial look. Kara said that there were some good parts in the performance, but other parts that weren’t. Kara also wants her to become more unique and believable. Randy agrees that it’s a tough song to do, but feels that she did a good job. Randy also wants Michelle to jump out of her comfort zone and take risks.

Didi Benami

23-year-old waitress Didi Benami of Knoxville, Tennessee: Didi sang “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson. Even during the auditions, Didi had a knack for choosing the perfect songs to showcase her gorgeous voice and personality and tonight is no different! Love this song choice for her, she sounds great! This is a very authentic and heartfelt performance. Didi’s definitely one of my fav contestants! Simon thinks she’s a good singer, but feels like she and other performers tonight have been trying to sound like Adele and Duffy. He also thinks the song was dreary. Sorry, I don’t agree with Simon AT ALL! He’s wrong about her. However, he did say that he likes her. Kara thinks that Didi is showing another level talent by changing the song up, but feels it was a bit pitchy at times. Randy agrees with Simon that there was no star power in the performance. Ellen feels it was the wrong song choice for her 1st performance, but that she has a great voice. I have to say, I think the judges are totally missing the mark with Didi tonight.

Sidebar…Simon’s “both ways” joke about Ryan was pretty funny ;-) Lol, but anyway…

Siobhan Magnus

19-year-old Glass Blowing Apprentice Siobhan Magnus of Cape Cod, Massachusetts: She sang Chris Isaac’s “Wicked Game.” Since Simon’s so bored tonight, I’m pretty sure that this song choice is pretty depressing for him as well. I actually feel it’s a pretty bad choice for her tonight. She sounds weird singing it and it puts her in the bottom with a couple of other contestants for me tonight. Kara, however, says she liked that song for her tonight. Wow, I just didn’t feel it. Randy feels she’s got a great voice, but that the song choice wasn’t right. Ellen loved the song choice and the performance. Simon liked the song, but didn’t love it. He felt like she did better during Hollywood Week. But I tell ya, there are times when I totally agree with the judges, but other times, I wonder if we were watching the same performance! I thought Siobhan’s performance was just terrible and that Didi’s was thousands of times better. But hey, I’m just blogging…THEY actually get the big bucks for this, lol.

Crystal Bowersox

24-year-old Mom & Musician Crystal Bowersox of Elliston, Ohio: She sang Alanis Morrissette’s “Hand In My Pocket.” This song is a song that I think really showcases Crystal’s personality and voice well. I mean, it reminded me more of a Melissa Etheridge song than an Alanis Morrissette song, but she sounded good singing it. I also liked that she broke out the harmonica and played it…nice touch! Not my fav performance of the night, but unique to her personality. This is one of those performances where I agree with the judges…Randy also just said that she reminded him of Melissa Etheridge. But he also mentioned Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. He says that it was one of his fav performances tonight too. Ellen says that she’s a fan of Crystal’s and that she adds something fresh to the show. Simon said the performance was good, but that the truth is…there are thousands of women doing what she does at subway stations. He feels she’s not unique. On the other hand, Simon says he really likes her and thinks she’s refreshing. Uh, I think he’s kinda confused, lol. Kara liked her performance, but thinks she’s got more in her. She also says that there’s no doubt in her mind that Crystal will be on the show next week! And wow, when I typed that she reminded me of Melissa Etheridge, I typed it before Randy mentioned it and I typed it before I knew that Crystal had a Melissa Etheridge autograph on her guitar! She also had a Shania Twain autograph on her guitar.

Katie Stevens

17-year-old high school student Katie Stevens of Middlebury, Connecticut: When she 1st auditioned for the show, she was 16! She sang “Feeling Good” by Michael Buble. This is such a predictable song for this competition. Some of her notes are off, but she sounds okay singing it. I like her stage presence though. I also love her little black dress, accented with the red sash, red ribbon in her hair and sexy red pumps! Ellen likes her voice, but felt that the song was too serious and conservative for a 17-year-old. She felt the song was a little old for her. Simon agrees with Ellen and says it was like her Mom & Dad dressed her and gave her this song! He said the performance was very pageanty and that her performances can’t be like she’s performing at her Mom’s birthday party, lol. Kara felt like she was pitchy and all over the place, but has a naturally nice voice. Randy agrees with Kara that the notes were off, but that she reminds him of Jordin Sparks and has talent. They all want her to choose a younger sounding song for her age.

So who did I vote for tonight? Paige, Lilly and Didi (Didi because not only did she have one of my fav performances, but I also thought the judges were unfair in their critiques of her)! Two of the ladies will be voted off the show on the live results show Thursday. Tomorrow, the Top 12 Guys perform! Speaking of Thursday’s show…

American Idol Gets The Shelley Wade Treatment: Group Day!

Idol Judges Idol Sign

On yesterday’s show, the Idol hopefuls made it past the judges with their solo performances. But will they survive Group Day? The contestants are responsible for finding a group to be a part of (which could be a serious test of their social skills), coming up with a group name, figuring out a song to perform once they’re in that group and coming up with choreography for the performance. All of these decisions are very critical for the contestants since the wrong group choices, choreography choices and song choices could end their hopes of ever making it into the Top 24! This segment of the show brings out some of the crazy, out of control egos of some of the contestants. They’re all trying to out sing each other; they all think they sound better than each other; they’re all having power struggles within their own groups. I’m tellin’ ya…egos out of control! And the thing about groups is…you ever notice that a lot of groups tend to break up eventually? Why? Because of egos! I mean, think about it…most people go into singing because they want to sing. But when you’re in a group, there’s always bound to be one member who stands out from the crowd and gets more attention from the fans. That group member gets more singing time, more attention from the media and it tends to create tension and jealousy in the group. And even when there’s no tension and jealousy, the most popular group member inevitably wants to break out and go solo….leaving the other members to wonder about the fate of the group. That’s why when I used to sing and perform, I NEVER wanted to be part of a group. I didn’t want to deal with all those ego issues. I wanted to sing, so I sang alone…solo! So this group thing on Idol always lends itself to ego drama. Anyway, time for the groups to perform in front of Simon, Randy, Kara & Ellen

Idol Group Faith

Group 1: Faith, which consists of 3 members Michelle Delamor, Charity Vance and Ashley Rodriguez. They sang Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable.” They sound pretty good. The performance wasn’t exciting, but these girls all did extremely well during their initial individual auditions at the beginning of the season. The judges were impressed because Ellen let them know that they all made it through! Just to remind you, I’ve got my eye on Ashley Rodriguez as one of the ones who could actually be the next American Idol. I’ve felt that since her audition in Boston.

Idol Group Team Awesome

Group 2: Team Awesome, which consists of 4 group members Michael “Big Mike” Lynche, Seth Rollins, Tim Urban and Michael Castro (younger brother of Idol alum Jason Castro). First of all, this is a wiggity whack group name, lol. But that’s neither here nor there. They sang “Get Ready” by The Temptations. Oddly enough, they didn’t show Michael Castro singing, which leads me to believe that he won’t make it through to the next round. My other thought was that although Tim Urban did a great job yesterday during solo performances, he didn’t sound so good singing this particular song with the group. He sounded kinda weak. But they sent Urban through to the next round with Big Mike! This is a good news day all around for Big Mike since his wife just gave birth to their daughter right before this performance! Unfortunately, Seth and Michael are going home.

Idol Group Neopolitan

Group 3: Neopolitan, which consists of 4 group members Liz Rooney, Thaddeus Johnson, Jessica Cunningham and an unnamed contestant. They sang “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga. I thought that some group members stood out more than others, but that none of them sounded amazing and none of them sounded terrible. The judges sent them all through to the next round!

Idol Group Destiny's Wild

Group 4: Destiny’s Wild, which consists of 4 group members Todrick Hall, Theri, Jareb Liewer and Siobhan Magnus. And as we saw during rehearsals, they also performed Gaga’s “Bad Romance.” I have to start out by saying that this group has no right to think that Neopolitan stole their idea to also sing this song acapella. I mean, it’s not like they created acapella singing or anything! And yes, they all practiced in the same area, but each group chose to sing this song without knowing that the other was gonna sing it until they all started rehearsing. And Todrick’s ego is so much bigger than it seemed during his initial performance during Audition Week. He was endearing back then…but now he just seems like a jerk. That said though, Destiny’s Wild sounds pretty good. So far to me, their choreography has been more thought out than the rest of the groups. Theri’s voice wasn’t that strong with the group, but she’s got the most polished look of any contestant on the show to far. Her hair is bangin’, her clothes are bangin’ and she looks fabulous. After the performance though, Ellen told them that it was weird and that their outfits looked like they were performing for Cirque du Soleil, lol! Wow. That said, they all made it through to the next round…inflated egos and all!

Group 5: The Mighty Rangers, which consists of 5 group members Tori Kelly, Maddie Penrose, Mark Labriola, Kimberly Kerbow and Danny Jones They sang Neyo’s “Closer.” Tori and Maddie did well, but Mark & Kimberly forgot the lyrics…and that’s a pet peeve of Simon’s at this point in the competition. And they didn’t even show Danny singing at all. In the end, the judges sent Danny, Kimberly and Mark home. Tori and Maddie are through to the next round!

Group 6: Phoenix, which did consist of 5 members, but now only consists of 4 since one of them flaked out and left the show entirely! Wow. I can’t believe that she made it all the way to Hollywood Week, then left! Sometimes you just don’t get these opportunities twice. But it goes to show, if you don’t believe in yourself, you can’t succeed. Anyway, the group consists of Ben Honeycutt, Jeff Goldford, Moorea Masa and Jermaine Sellers. They sang “Carry On My Wayward Son” by Kansas. It’s odd because Moorea also made it all the way to Group Day last season, but she was the most nervous in this particular group this season…she even forgot the lyrics. You would think that she’d be more confident since she’s been here before. She also sounded very week. Jermaine was the strongest vocally. I mean, I didn’t know where that note was going at first, but he pulled it out in the end. He’s got a great voice and I’m still impressed with his Audition Week story of how he’s a church boy and takes care of his Mother. In all, the group did well considering one of their members left them just before their performance. Kudos to them. In the end, the judges sent Moorea and Ben home, but Jeff and Jermaine made it through.

Group 7: Big Dreams, which consists of 4 members Matt Lawrence, Amanda Shechtman and a couple of others that they didn’t let us see sing. It really didn’t matter though because none of this group made it through. Waste of our time. But I guess they were trying to prove the point that most of the groups who attempted to sing Gwen Stefani’s “The Sweet Escape” failed miserably.

Idol Group Middle C

Group 8: Middle C, which consists of 3 members Janell Wheeler, Jermaine Purifory and Casey James. They also sang Neyo’s “Closer.” This group was destined to make it through to the next round because from what we’ve seen of them this week and during Audition Week, the members are all exceedingly talented. It’s a no brainer!

Idol Group Three Men & A Baby

Group 9: Three Men & A Baby, which consist of 4 members Andrew Garcia, Katie Stevens, J.B. Ahfua and another guy who’s name we didn’t learn, nor did we get to hear him sing. They sang “No One” by Alicia Keys. All of the members that we heard from sounded good and the entire group is going through to the next round. Btw, the group’s name is really corny…but I get it. Lol. And finally…

Idol Group The Dreamers

Group 10: The Dreamers, which consists of 5 members Mary Powers, Hope Johnson, Margo May, Alex Lambert and another unnamed contestant. Initially, this group seemed destined for failure because they couldn’t figure out who was gonna be in the group when groups were forming; there was infighting; Mary was extremely annoying and pushy and they just overall didn’t seem to have their ish together! Lol. They sang, appropriately enough, “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac…One of my fav songs ever. (Sidebar…I got the chance to interview the legendary Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac last summer! It was a complete honor. To watch that interview and some of my other celebrity interviews, head over to The Shelley Wade Treatment section of this site by CLICKING HERE!) Anyway, this Idol group butchered this song! As bossy as Mary was to the rest of the group members, you would think that she would do a great job, but she started off sketchy and seemed to have forgotten a little of the lyrics. Margo sounded just terrible and off key. Alex forgot some of the words, but he actually sounded really good. Kara commented that “the dream” died somewhere on that stage, lol! Randy thought that the background vocals sounded painful. In the end, Mary, Hope and Alex made it through to the next round.

Alright, that does it for Idol this week. Next episode…Tuesday, February 16th! Be sure to bookmark this blog and check back with me daily. Light and love…muah!

American Idol Gets The Shelley Wade Treatment: Ellen’s Debut on Hollywood Week!

Idol Hollywood Week Judges

Hollywood Week Day 1:

This is the 1st round of Hollywood Week. It’s sudden death where contestants either move on to the next round or head home. The contestants came onstage in groups of 8 with the choice of singing acapella or with an instrument. Then the judges compare notes, divide the group of 8 into two lines by asking certain contestants to step forward or back. Then of course, only one of the lines will be going through to the next round. Hollywood Week’s always a lot to take in because not only do we see the contestants who were already highlighted during their particular audition, but we’re now finally introduced to the contestants who won the golden ticket, but weren’t highlighted in their audition city. So we’re getting to know a whole new crew of contestants. Half the contestants will try out on Day 1, then the other half will try out on Day 2. Here goes…

Skii Bo Ski

Idol Katie Stevens

We already see a couple of familiar faces…SkiiBoSki from the Atlanta auditions and Katie Stevens from the Boston auditions. Katy chose to sing Stevie Wonder’s “For Once In My Life” acapella. Her voice was a little weak in the beginning of the song, but she got her confidence back and finished up strong. Simon & Randy liked her. SkiiBoSki also sang acapella. He did “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg” by The Temptations. He sounded decent. Of course, Ellen started off with a funny comment saying that he scared her with the way he was prowling the stage during his song! After deliberating, the judges chose to send Katy to through to the next round. That means that Skiiboski is out. He asked the judges why and Simon replied that he’s not a good singer. I have to disagree with that. He’s not the best singer in the world, but he’s not bad either. Besides, why would they send him to Hollywood Week if he wasn’t a good singer?

Idol Andrew Garcia

Idol LA Tasha Layton

The two familiar faces from the next group were Vanessa Wolf from the Atlanta auditions, Andrew Garcia from the Los Angeles auditions and Tasha Layton from the Los Angeles auditions. And wow, I can’t believe that Andrew chose to sing his own rendition of former Idol Judge Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up”! He chose to sing it while playing the guitar. He pulled it off though! He sounded really good with his acoustic, slowed down version of “Straight Up”. Kara was really impressed and I think it was really smart of him to take the song and flip it the way no one would have imagined…every season on Idol, the contestants who take those kinds of risks always outshine the others. Vanessa was extremely nervous, but you could still tell that she has a nice and unique voice under all those nerves. She sang “No Rain” by Blind Melon. Sadly, she didn’t make it through to the next round. I still think she could be a huge country star though. She just needs to get past those nerves…which are understandable seeing that this was her 1st time flying on a plane and being under such huge pressure. It’s okay though, at least she made it as far as she did. Andrew, on the other hand, did make it through to the next round. And although they didn’t show Tasha singing, she also made it to the next round.

Cornelius 3

Idol Dallas Maegan Wright

Along the way, they briefly showed some contestants already familiar to us from the auditions, but didn’t make it past this 1st Hollywood Week round. Contestants like Cornelius Edwards from the Orlando auditions. Now they already knew that he shouldn’t have even made it to Hollywood Week in the 1st place. The only thing that stood out about his audition was the split he did that ended up splitting his pants, lol! Also Maegan Wright from the Dallas auditions didn’t make it through to the next round. And I’m kinda disappointed that Amedeo DiRocco from the Boston auditions didn’t make through either. I loved his personality and his big Italian family stories. But more importantly, he actually has a good voice.

Idol Jannell Wheeler

Things turned out a little better for Janell Wheeler from the Orlando auditions. She did a nice acoustic guitar rendition of Estelle’s “American Boy.” It was the perfect song for her because it highlighted her voice beautifully! And she’s going to the next round!

Bosa-Mora-American-Idol-01-2010-01-12

Remember Bosa Mora from the auditions? Well he played the keyboards while he sang this time around. He sang Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love” and he just couldn’t seem to stay on key. So sadly, Bosa did not make it through to the next round.

Idol Haeley Vaughn

Idol LA Mary Powers

Up next was 16-year-old Haeley Vaughn. I was sick last week and missed her auditions in Denver last week. This week, she sang with her guitar and sounded pretty good. Now I do remember Mary Powers from the Los Angeles auditions. She chose to sing Pink’s “Sober” acapella. She sang it a little fast to me, but still sounded good. Both Haeley and Mary were lucky enough to make it through to the next round.

Idol Dallas Todrick Hall

Chicago Idol Charity Vance

Ashley-rodriguez-american-idol-01-2010-01-12

Of course, we didn’t get to see all of the contestants who made it through to the next round. But among them were Todrick Hall from the Dallas auditions, Charity Vance from the Chicago auditions and Ashley Rodriguez from the Boston auditions. At this point, I still think that Ashley’s got the voice and look to win the entire Idol competition this season. We’ll see if she holds up.

In all, 46 contestants made it through to the group round!

Hollywood Week Day 2:

Idol Orlando Jay Stone

The 1st familiar face is Jay Stone from the Orlando auditions. You’ll remember that he was the dude that thought he was original, but was really doing the kind of beatboxing that Blake Lewis already did a few seasons ago on Idol. He beatboxed his way through an acoustic version of Shai’s “If I Ever Fall In Love.” Simon wasn’t impressed with him when he auditioned the 1st time in Orlando and this time was no different. And since Ellen joked that there was something wrong with his mic, I think we can safely assume she wasn’t impressed with him either.

Idol Lilly Scott

Lilly Scott was another contestant that I missed during last week’s Denver auditions. She chose to sing the standard “Lullaby of Birdland” acoustically with her guitar. Wow, she’s got a gorgeous and unique voice! Kara said that everything about her is refreshing and unique. After deliberating, the judges sent Lilly through to the next round. Not surprisingly, Jay did not make it to the next round.

Idol Micahel Lynche

Michael Lynche’s wife broke the news that her water broke and that she was going into labor right before his audition. Now that’s what I call a lot of pressure! He played his guitar as he sang “Waiting On The World To Change” by John Mayer. Sounded pretty good too. He really made the song his own and he made it to the next round!

Up next was Jason Williams, the cancer survivor from the Boston Auditions. You may also remember me reporting that he’d also made it through to Hollywood week last season. This go round, he played the keyboards has he sang “In Other Words I Love You.” Randy said he sounded interesting. Not sure if that’s a compliment. I guess not because he didn’t make it through to the next round.

Tim Urban from the Dallas auditions played his guitar while singing “Come Back To Me” by former Idol winner David Cook. He sounded a lot better this time around than he did during the Dallas auditions and for that, he’s going through to the next round.

Idol Dallas Erica Rhodes

Some of the contestants already familiar to us from the auditions, but didn’t make it past this 1st Hollywood Week round were Page Dechaucey, sisters Amanda & Bernadette from the Orlando auditions and Erica Rhodes from the Dallas audtions. I was really surprised that Erica didn’t make it through. I thought that her past as a star of “Barney & Friends” when she was a kid and the fact that she’s talented and pretty would help her through to the next round. Didn’t happen though.

Up next Maddy Curtis from the Boston auditions. She sang acapella and sounded just okay this time around. Simon told her that it was definitely the wrong song for her.

Idol Casey James

Casey James from the Denver auditions was next. He played guitar while singing and sounded really good. In the end, Casey made it through to the next round, but Maddy didn’t.

Idol Didi Benami

In the final 8 contestants was Los Angeles auditioner Didi Benami. I think she figured that she’d score some brownie points by singing Judge Kara DioGuardi’s song “Terrified.” She actually sounded pretty great singing it while playing her guitar. Her voice reminds me of Natasha Bedingfield’s voice. Simon said that he hated to admit it, but he really liked that song! Lol. It was a backhanded compliment to Kara I guess. Simon…he’s so funny. Kara actually seemed like she wanted to cry while Didi performed her song. And she couldn’t believe that Simon sorta gave her a compliment!

Idol Crystal Bowersox

Chicago auditioner Crystal Bowersox was up next. She also sang an acoustic version of Aretha Franklin’s “Natural Woman.” I liked that she didn’t try to sound like Aretha. She made the song hers and I think she sounded pretty good. I had a feeling that they’d both make it through to the next round…and they did!

Idol Ellen Degeneres

And that does it for Round 1 of Hollywood Week. In all 96 contestants made it through to Group Numbers tomorrow! So what’s my opinion of Ellen Degeneres as an Idol Judge? I thought she did a great job! I wish we could’ve heard more from her, but that’s always a challenge when you have four judges. She and Simon seemed to get along splendidly. We’ve been hearing so many rumors that they didn’t like each other…maybe we’ll see some of that in the coming episodes. Or maybe those were all just vicious rumors. I’ve always thought of Ellen as a nice person, but I was really impressed that she was able to be nice AND be truthful about whether a contestant had talent or not. And she added some great comic relief to the show. Keep reading to find out what to expect from Idol in the coming weeks…

American Idol Gets The Shelley Wade Treatment: Los Angeles Auditions!

Before I get into the Los Angeles Auditions…

Idol Ellen Degeneres

Gotta say Happy Birthday to new American Idol Judge Ellen Degeneres, who celebrates her 52nd birthday today! Last season’s Idol runner up Adam Lambert helped Ellen celebrate her bday by performing on her show!

Idol Judges Idol Sign

We’ll finally get to see Ellen’s Idol debut during Hollywood Week February 9th.

Idol LA crowd

11,000 hopefuls showed up to the Idol auditions at the Rose Bowl!

Day 1

Idol LA Avril Lavigne

First guest judge…Avril Lavigne! Still trying to figure out how I feel about her sweatshirt with horns, lol. But hey, to each her own ;-) Btw, Avril came across to me as the most outspoken of the guest judges so far this season on Idol.

Btw, I’m skipping blogging about all the riff raff auditioners and just focusing on the talented ones who are going to Hollywood…

Idol LA Jim Ranger

-Jim Ranger is a 27-year-old worship pastor from Bakersfield, California. He’s been married for 7 years, has 3 kids and seems like a good, wholesome guy. He sang an original song he wrote called “Drive.” I agree with Simon that his voice is very authentic. I like that he doesn’t sound like anyone else and was true to himself and his own talent. Simon & Randy liked him. But I was kind of surprised that Avril & Kara were hesitant to give him the golden ticket because he’s got a family and they weren’t sure how he’d pursue a singing career and still be able to give time to his family and church. In fact, Avril gave him a no. But in the end, Kara sided with Simon & Randy and sent Jim through to Hollywood. Good for him!

Idol LA Mary Powers

-Mary Powers is a 28-year-old singer from Burbank, California. Whoa, this chic sounds really good singing “Love Is A Battlefield” by Pat Benatar. She’s got a strong voice with a nice rasp to it. Simon felt like her rocker style was cliché, but the Idol stylists can fix that problem during the show! She’s going to Hollywood…Good pick!

Day 2

Idol LA Katy Perry

Katy Perry replaced Avril for Day 2 of the Los Angeles auditions. I think it’s really cool that she kicked off her appearance by pointing out how ridiculous it was that Simon, Randy & Kara arrived to the auditions by helicopter. Agreed girl, lol! Btw, they tried to make a big deal about Katy & Kara smack talking each other during the auditions…but Katy & Kara write songs together and are good friends in real life, so I’m willing to bet that they were just being silly for the cameras. And Katy looked absolutely fabulous in her dress!

Idol LA Andrew Garcia

-Andrew Garcia’s a 23-year-old musician from Moreno Valley, California. He’s also got a wife and kid. He’s the 1st with a sob story of the night. His dad mentioned how he grew up around gangs and how he just wants Andrew to have a different life. Wow, his dad said he was born & raised in Compton…wonder if he knows DJ Quick? Lol. Anyway, he’s got a lovely voice. “Sunday Morning” by Maroon 5 was a great song choice for him. He really impressed Simon and all the judges and he’s going to Hollywood!

Idol LA Tasha Layton

-Tasha Layton is a 26-year-old Personal Assistant by day and Pastor by night from Granada Hills, California. She sang “Baby Baby Baby” by Joss Stone. She’s got a nice texture to her voice…kinda reminds me of Natasha Bedingfield’s sound. All the judges like her, so she’s headed to Hollywood!

Idol LA Chris Golightly

-Next & final sob story of the night…25-year-old Shoe Salesman Chris Golightly of Los Angeles grew up in Foster Care his whole life. He estimates that he lived with at least 25 families over his lifetime. Wow, that’s like a different family for each year of his life :-( Anyway, he says that that lifestyle could be pretty lonely and that music got him through it. Aww. He sang “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King. He’s got a pretty good voice and he’s got that Justin Guarini look about him. Simon & Katy weren’t that impressed by him, but Kara & Randy loved him. In the end, he got the golden ticket and is headed to Hollywood!

In all, 23 contestants from the Los Angeles auditions are headed to Hollywood. Up next, the Dallas auditions tomorrow with the guest judges Joe Jonas & Neil Patrick Harris!

American Idol Gets The Shelley Wade Treatment: Orlando Auditions!

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Tonight’s guest judge was Kristin Chenowith.

Kristin Chenowith

Idol Judges Kristin

Idol Orlando Auditions

To start things off…In this crappy economy, I thought it was kind of distasteful for Ryan, Simon & Randy to show themselves relaxing in Miami, talking about the break they deserved and jumping on their expensive private plane while the 10,000 contestants braved the audition process. However, Kara and Kristin showed up on time like the ladies they are ;-) Btw, they were both looking fabulous!

Day 1

-The very 1st audition was from 22-year-old Florida Cosmetologist Theo Glinton and his corporate hair salon president/singing superstar aspirations. He sang Pat Benatar’s “Heartbreaker”. I agree with Simon that his over-the-top outfit made it impossible to take him seriously from the get go. I also agree with Kara that Theo sang very powerfully. But there’s a difference between having power and talent…so Theo, his feathers, glitter and all his glory will not be going Hollywood.

-And with that, the tone was set early on for the awfulness that was the 1st day of the Orlando auditions! One after another terrible audition was implied as the Idol editors showed countless hopefuls walking away golden ticketless. Kara & Kristin had a fabulous time together giggling, high-fiving, acting like BFFs and irritating Simon in the process. Also in the process, Simon managed to get out THE most classic criticism to one of the contestants…He said, ‘You walked in like a cocktail stick and then sang as if you’d sat on a cat! I mean, that was the audition!’ Lol, classic Simon. Perfect! Just the kind of comment we long to hear from him, lol!

Idol Orlando Seth Rollins

-The 1st sob story of the night comes from married father of two, Seth Rollins of Lakeland, Florida. He’s a 28–year-old Insurance Adjustor who’s son is autistic. He says that he wishes he could afford to get his son the medical care that he needs, while still being able to be a full-time musician. He’s at the final age to try out for Idol and he’s singing the old standard “Someone To Watch Over Me.” His singing voice is naturally pretty. I thought he was a little pitchy at times, but he’s far more talented than the rest of the contestants that we’ve seen tonight. The judges felt like he needed to show a little more personality, but they all gave him yeses! So he’s on to Hollywood!

Idol Orlando Jermaine Purifoy

-Next up, 24-year-old Telecommunications student Jermaine Purifoy of Cleveland, Tennessee. This is his 2nd time auditioning for Idol and this time he’s singing another old standard, “Smile”. You know, it’s the song Jermaine Jackson sang at Michael’s memorial because it was Michael’s favorite song. At the beginning of this audition, he said that he was singing a song by Tony Bennett, but this song’s been covered by countless singers and artists over the years. I’m a huge Nat King Cole fan, so Nat’s version of “Smile” is my favorite. Btw, Jermaine (Purifoy, not Jackson) sang this song beautifully tonight! I can’t figure out for the life of me why this dude didn’t make it to Hollywood Week the 1st time he auditioned! But he said that the 1st time he auditioned, he and his boys were on a road trip from college. Maybe he was having too much fun and didn’t prepare back then. In either case, he was prepared this time and he and his gorgeous voice got the golden ticket! Btw, his was my fav performance of the night.

Idol Orlando Shelby Dressel

-Final audition of the 1st day…18-year-old waitress Shelby Dressel of Avon Park, Florida. She’s got the 2nd sob story of the day. She was born with an undeveloped cranial nerve and has never been able to smile or use that side of her face normally. That’s always been a source of insecurity for her, but she mustered enough courage to audition. The song she sang for the audition was “Turn Me On” by Norah Jones. Wow! I was just thinking that she sounded pretty nice, but she forgot her words! Kristin said it best that Shelby’s got potential. So with that, she’s going to Hollywood! But I have to say that I’m shocked because forgetting the words during a song is a huge pet peeve of Simon’s. Oh well.

-In all, 19 hopefuls from Day 1 are headed to Hollywood.

Day 2

-I was surprised that Kristin Chenowith wouldn’t be returning to guest judge on Day 2. They said she had to be called back to New York for work, so we’ll just have to make due with the regular judges.

Idol Orlando Jay Stone

-The 1st contestant of the day was 25-year-old Music Business Grad Student Jay Stone of Miami singing The Beatles’ “Come Together”. Former Idol contestant Blake Lewis immediately came to mind since Jay beat-boxed through the entire audition. Simon automatically said no. Kara was impressed, but I wasn’t since he didn’t actually sing. But Randy asked if he sings, so he performed Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine”. He sounded pretty okay. Nothing amazing, but Kara convinced Randy to say yes and dude is going to Hollywood.

-Up next was a whole slew of women that the show briefly highlighted enough for us to hear their pretty voices…24-year-old Tampa Sales Representative Janell Wheeler; 23-year-old student Brittany Starr James of Coral Springs, Florida & 19-year-old student Kasi Bedford of Seminole, Florida. They’re all going to Hollywood!

Idol Orlando Cornelius Edwards

-24-year-old Security Guard Cornelius Edwards of Boynton Beach, Florida was next. And this was the dude I was waiting for! He was the one who jumped up, did a hard split on the floor and ended up splitting his pants! Lol, wow!

Cornelius 3

Cornelius 2

He said that he learned how to dance from his ‘friends’ who are ‘adult entertainers’…in other words, strippers! Judging by the way he did that split, he’s the actual stripper, lol! But as funny as that audition was, I’m kinda offended that this dude got a golden ticket to Hollywood. He sang “Proud Mary” by Ike & Tina Turner, but didn’t sound that good. So you mean to tell me they let this dude go to Hollywood because they thought his pants splitting was funny?! Well that’s pretty fair to all the other contestants…NOT!

-27-year-old waitress Bernadette Desimone and 23-year-old Sales Associate Amanda Desimone are up next. They’re sisters from Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Like Charity from yesterday’s Chicago auditions, Bernadette & Amanda live in the house with their Mom who has a salon in their home. They’re cute girls and they have pretty nice voices. I think that Amanda’s voice is slightly prettier, but they both have decent voices. Simon disagreed with me though because although he said yes to them both, he thought that Bernadette had the better voice. The sisters are going to Hollywood!

-And as soon as they started interviewing 28-year-old Graphic Designer Jarrod Norrell of Marietta, Georgia, I knew he was slightly off center emotionally. I like that he said he was giving it up to God by singing “Amazing Grace”, but he was seriously talentless. Even after Kara told him he sounded like a lawn mower (lol), he still kept trying to sing to the judges. Then after security told him to leave, he still would not go! Wow, they ended up having to handcuff this guy and forcefully escort him out of the building! It was a little scary feeling for a minute, but Simon broke the ice by saying, ‘Yes or no?’ Lol, he’s so crazy! Of course it’s a no Simon!

-The final Orlando audition was from 25-year-old Trucking Company Manager Matthew Lawrence of Starke, Florida. His was also the final sob story of the evening. El stupo robbed a bank with a BB gun when he was 15 and ended up spending 4 years in jail. Now that that’s behind him, he thought he’d pursue his singing dream. He auditioned with “Trouble” by Ray Lamontagne. He could stand to work on his breathing, but he’s got a unique voice. That song was appropriate for his life experiences. I agree with Simon that he was very real and authentic when he sang. And Matt’s turning his life around…he got the golden ticket to Hollywood!

That does it for the Orlando auditions, where 31 out of 10,000 hopefuls got the golden ticket! Next week, the auditions head to Los Angeles with guest judges Katy Perry and Avril Lavigne!

American Idol Gets The Shelley Wade Treatment: Chicago Auditions!

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Before we get to the Chicago auditions, a few notes from last week’s Atlanta and Boston auditions…

General Larry Platt The View

If you missed General Larry Platt performing “Pants On The Ground” on “The View,” not to worry…Check it out below!

Also…

Justin-Williams-Audition-Feeling-Good-01-2010-01-12

Turns out that Boston wasn’t the 1st time we saw contestant Justin Williams on Idol. He was also on last season’s American Idol. This year, they say he’s from Sandy, Utah, but last year they list him as being from Meza, Arizona. Hmm, wonder what that’s about. Maybe he moved. Anyway, check him out performing the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” during Season 8’s Hollywood Week in a group performance with future Idol winner Kris Allen and other contestants:

And finally…

Skii Bo Ski

Skii Bo Ski definitely stood out at last week’s Atlanta auditions because he’s so…how should I say? Unique! Yeah, that’s it! Lol. But TMZ, featured the many Florida mugshots of Skii Bo Ski on their website…

Idol Mugshots Skii

March 2005: Possession of cannabis with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine, escape, and two counts resisting an officer without violence.

November 2005: Ten counts of contempt of court, providing false ID to law enforcement officer, escape during transport, resisting officer without violence, possession of cocaine and battery by detainee in detention facility.

February 2007: Possession of controlled substance of less than 10 grams, providing false ID to law enforcement officer, resisting officer without violence, escape.

August 2008: Violation of probation, driving while license suspended, no registration.

December 2009: Contempt of court.

Not that it’s the 1st time an Idol contestant has a criminal record as opposed to a music record, lol! Anyway…

Idol Judges Mary J.

I thought that Mary J. Blige was a pretty good judge in Atlanta. None of the guest judges have stood out as exceptional so far. But Mary J. lucked up and got to see the birth of the “Pants On The Ground” phenomenon on her night! Now, on to Chicago!

Chicago Idol Shania Twain

Chicago Idol Judges Shania Twain

Shania Twain was tonight’s guest judge. It was really good to see her again. After her whole divorce fiasco, it’s good to see her back, smiling and looking lovely! Again, no groundbreaking moments on the show, but she was a pleasant judge.

Chicago Idol crowd

I LOVE Chicago! I visited for the 1st time last summer. By the time I left, I thought, ‘What took me so long to visit Chicago? I love this town!’ There were 12,000 hopefuls, biggest audience so far this season. Since they were in Chicago, they began with an Obama theme by showing signs including Obama and having the audience chanting ‘Yes We Can!’

Day 1

Chicago Idol Katelyn Epperly

-1st up, 19-year-old Katlyn Epperly, a student from West Des Moines, Iowa. Good thing her mother finally talked her into auditioning because she’s the total package. She finally decided to audition in large part for her mother…since her father recently left her mother. And yep, I think this story qualifies as the 1st sob story of the night. She sang “Syrup & Honey” by Duffy. She’s got a soulful, sometimes scruffy voice. Nice voice and pretty face. The judges wanted a little more upbeat tone for her, but they thought she had enough of “it” to make it to Hollywood. She got the golden ticket! I have a feeling that this was the 1st piece of happiness her family’s felt in a minute.

Chicago Idol Broadway girl

-2nd audition didn’t go so well. I mean, the chick was funny & all with her fake fainting and her boob trick, but the judges couldn’t take her seriously. Besides, there’s no way any contestant can top being as funny as last week’s “Pants On The Ground” guy, so they need to just stop with the silliness and just sing!

Chicago Idol Charity Vance

-Up next…16-year-old Charity Vance from Little Rock, Arkansas. When she’s not in high school, she helps out her parents at their hair salon at their house. Here parents have been doing hair together for about 20 years. As soon as they showed Charity talking, I knew I’d like her singing because she has such a nice speaking voice. Her singing voice was a little higher than I expected, but it’s got a gorgeous and jazzy quality to it. She sang “Summertime” from Porgy & Bess—a song that a lot of people try singing—but she made it uniquely hers. I really think she can make it far in this competition. And she’s not bad on the eyes either. She’s going to Hollywood!

-So far this season, the Idol people seem like they’re showing more talented people during the auditions than the jokesters. Although…there are plenty of jokesters to be had! They really didn’t have to show us the footage of the guy with tighter shorts on than Richard Simmons with a huge bulge in the front! I could’ve also done without seeing crazy accordion lady, lol! But the best one was the Mom who confronted Simon Cowell for not liking her daughter’s audition. She told Simon she used to like him, but now she doesn’t. He said to her, ‘You know you still like me’…then turned his back to her and walked away! Classic, lol.

Chicago Idol Angela Martin

-The next contestant has had a lot of obstacles to overcome and sob stories for days. Her name is Angela Martin of Chicago and she’s 28, the age limit to appear on Idol. She’s auditioned for Idol before, but this is her last shot. She said that the last time she auditioned for Idol, Shriners Hospital saw her and decided to care for her sick daughter until she’s 21. I thought that was really wonderful! But then right after her audition, her dad was killed and she had to go to Hollywood Week a week after his funeral. Then the 2nd time she made it to Hollywood Week, she couldn’t finish her obligation with the show because she had a court date and warrant for traffic violations. This is her 3rd audition for Idol and I have no doubt that she’ll make it to Hollywood Week again since she impressed the judges 2 other times before. She sang “Just Fine” by last week’s guest judge Mary J. Blige. I’m surprised she chose to audition with an upbeat song, but she sounded amazing. I agree with the judges, this chick deserves a break and I’m happy she got that golden ticket again! I hope she makes a lot further in the competition this go round. Perseverance definitely pays off!

Day 2

Chicago Idol Tiny Tim

Chicago Idol Construction Worker

-Okay, I really can’t believe they allowed this Tiny Tim “Tiptoe Through The Tulips” guy to even audition…waste of time! I mean, tulips are my favorite flowers, but this was not my favorite audition! And this construction worker dude that supposedly cried when the judges said no to him…I heard him crying, but I didn’t see any actual tears! These people just show up to see if they can stand out and be terrible enough to make it onto the show. Funny at times, but a waste of time. I think I spoke way too soon earlier when I said that this season Idol was showing more talented contestants than jokesters. Yep, I spoke waaaaay too soon on that one. Anyway…

Chicago Idol John Park

-John Park is a 20-year-old college student from Northbrook, Illinois. He’s got a pretty decent voice. Nothing amazing, but better than many of the contestants so far in Chicago. Good voice, but a little shaky at times. He could use a little work and guidance from the judges. The judges gave him 4 yeses, so he’s going to Hollywood. I’m pretty sure that after all the horrible auditions before him, the judges were pretty happy to send him through with the golden ticket.

Chicago Idol Paige Dechausse

-Finally, 21-year-old college student Paige Dechausse from Morris, Illinois. Her sob story was that she had really, really bad asthma as a child and was even close to death at one point. Glad that she not only made it through that difficult time in her life, but that her health’s improved so much that she can pursue a singing career. Singing Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” is either really gutsy, or really dumb…depending on your level of talent. Simon said no, but the rest of the judges said yes, so she’s going to Hollywood. I agree that her vocals were not the best. She sounded good, but it wasn’t amazing. I think that her breathing during the song could have been better, but that may be a side effect from asthma. She even had to use her inhaler after the audition. Good for her though for overcoming all the obstacles.

-I have to say that I’m extremely shocked that the talent pool from these Chicago auditions was so weak. Chicago is a city rich with talented people and these auditions were not representative of that at all. But in Chicago’s defense, not all of the contestants were from the Chi-Town area. They did show some really talented guys at the end of the show who I can’t wait to hear more from during Hollywood Week. They were 20-year-old Justin Ray from Marysville, Indiana; 27-year-old Keith Semple from Hanover Park, Illinois & 18-year-old Marcus Jones from Michael Jackson’s hometown of Gary, Indiana.

And that does it for the Chicago auditions, where 13 contestants got the golden ticket to Hollywood. Wednesday’s auditions are from Orlando with guest judge Kristin Chenowith. From the look of the previews, I cannot wait to see the guy who does the split and ended up splitting his pants, lol! Talk to ya then ;-)

American Idol Gets The Shelley Wade Treatment

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Idol Logo

I’ve blogged about & reported on American Idol for years on Z100 New York’s website under the name “The American Idol Diva”. In fact, you can probably still find some of my “Idol Diva Chats” on iTunes podcasts. Now I’m bringing my Idol reporting & blogging to The Shelley Wade Treatment website. Just as I did before, I’ll be blogging my thoughts on the latest American Idol episodes and happenings. I’ll also be bringing my American Idol chats to the Treatment…getting together with various Idol addicts and debating about our fav Idol contestants! I relate to American Idol so much because I grew up singing and performing in talent shows, so the experience is familiar to me. So be sure to bookmark this blog and check back daily for the latest Idol news, the “American Idol Gets The Shelley Wade Treatment” blog, “The Shelley Wade Treatment American Idol Chats” and everything else Idol! Let’s get started with last night’s season premiere…

Idol Judges large

And there you have it, the new lineup of American Idol’s key players. Ellen Degeneres looks good with the crew and fits right in. However, we won’t get to see her on the show until after the auditions when the contestants get to Hollywood Week around the 2nd week of February. Speaking of the auditions…

Day 1

Idol rainy

Season 9 kicked of in Boston on a rainy day with a crowd of 9,000!

Victoria Beckham

Idol judges victoria beckham

Victoria Beckham was this season’s 1st guest judge. She joined Simon, Randy & Kara for Days 1 & 2 in Boston. We’ll also get to see Posh later on during the Denver auditions February 2nd. As usual, Victoria was impeccably dressed. As a former Spice Girl, I think she was a good choice as guest judge. After all, she went through her fair share of auditions before becoming famous. But she was a bit quiet at some points during the auditions, then outspoken at other points. And she and Kara DioGuardi struck a nice girlie bond…even more so than Kara and Paula did. Btw, I did miss seeing Paula Abdul on Idol last night and waiting at the edge of my seat for what whacky, incomprehensible nonsense would come out of her mouth! Lol. But I’m super-excited that she’s coming back to be by Simon Cowell’s side next year as a judge on his new American version of “X Factor”!

Of course, the show consisted of more non-talented, delusional jokesters than actual talented singers. I’ll highlight a couple of them, but I’ll give more time to the ones who actually scored the Golden Ticket to Hollywood. Be on the lookout for…

Maddy Curtis, A 16-year-old high school student from Bluemont, Virginia. As usual, Idol always highlights a few contestants with sob stories. One of 9 kids, Maddy was the 1st of the contestants with sob stories. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that having Down Syndrome is a sob story…but pointing out that Maddy has several siblings with Down Syndrome was definitely meant to tug at the heartstrings. Maddy sang “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen. She was a little nervous, but had a beautiful, strong, adult-like voice…perfect for singing folk music in my opinion. She seems like a sweet girl. She got the golden ticket and she’s going to Hollywood!

Jennifer Hirsh is a 22-year-old Receptionist from Manhattan. She sang a jazzy, scatty rendition of “Ding Dong The Wicked Witch Is Dead”. She got the golden ticket and she’s going to Hollywood!

Claire Fuller is a 23-year-old college student from Philadelphia. She sang “To Be With You” by Mr. Big. She got the golden ticket and she’s going to Hollywood!

Jess Wolfe

Jess Wolfe is a 24-year old Booking Agent from Brooklyn. She sang “People Get Ready” by The Impressions…covered by countless artists, including Curtis Mayfield and Jeff Beck & Rod Stewart. She got the golden ticket and she’s going to Hollywood!

Amadeo Diricco is a 28-year-old married guy from Johnston, Rhode Island. They showed his big family that gets together every week for huge Italian feasts…The food looked so good! He sang “Oochie Coochie Man” by Muddy Waters. I was not expecting that bluesy voice from him! Good voice though. He was a little shaky with some notes, but has potential. He stands out with a personality that’s brighter than his voice. He got the golden ticket and he’s going to Hollywood…the 1st guy to get through during the Boston auditions!

Luke Shaffer

Luke Shaffer is a 24-year-old Waiter from NYC. He did a great job singing “Fall For You” by Secondhand Seranade. He’s kinda cute and I’m sure will be a hit with the ladies this season! He got the golden ticket and he’s going to Hollywood!

Benjamin Bright is a 25-year-old Elementary School Music Teacher from Rome, New York. I’m so happy that he did well because normally when Music Teachers or Vocal Coaches audition on Idol, they’re just terrible! I’m so happy he redeemed the profession, lol! He has a nice, naturally lovely voice. He got the golden ticket and he’s going to Hollywood!

Andrew Fenlon

Andrew Fenlon Is a 25-year-old unemployed musician from Boston. He didn’t get a golden ticket, but because of his bad attitude, I thought I’d share his audition with you just for more laughs! Funny thing about it, he actually didn’t sound like he had a bad voice…he just didn’t put enough effort into the audition. Kara hated him and told him she didn’t like him or his attitude. To me, he was just being rude to make himself stand out. Simon called it bad energy, but of course Simon liked him because they have similar personalities, lol! Anyway, Kara seemed like she hated him more than she hated Bikini Girl last season! Here’s the audition:

Ashley Rodriguez

Ashley Rodriguez is a 21-year-old college student from Boston. She sang “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys. She’s got a really nice voice with lots of soul. She’s also really pretty. Simon said to her, ‘Some people have got it and I think you may have it.’ She was the 1st contestant that I thought could actually win the title of American Idol at that very moment. Needless to say, she got the golden ticket and is going to Hollywood!

Tyler Grady

Tyler Grady is a 19-year-old Drummer from Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Right away, Tyler seemed like a complete hot mess to me, lol! The fact that he climbed a tree, fell out, shattered both wrists AND he’s a drummer…made me feel like dude is just high on drugs and his audition is gonna be a nightmare! But that’s why you shouldn’t judge someone from appearance alone. He sang “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye and just had the ladies swooning! He wasn’t that bad! I mean, his voice wasn’t amazing, but he could hold a note and he’s got something about him that stands out. He wants to move from behind the drum set and become a frontman. Well he’s on his way because he got the golden ticket and his headed to Hollywood!

Day 2
Idol foxy girl

Lisa Olivero is a 24-year-old Waitress from Billerica, Massachusetts. She had so much confidence and said she thinks she’s better than most of the people on Idol when she watches, so I just knew this girl was gonna be sangin’! Not so much! Lol. She sounded terrible! She had a shaky voice and hit some really bad notes when she sang “Vision Of Love” by Mariah Carey. Needless to say, she did not get the golden ticket to Hollywood. But when she walked out with that sexy walk, tight outfit and hot body, Randy Jackson’s mouth flew wide open! He said, ‘On second thought!’ Victoria and Simon’s mouths were wide open too! It was waaaaay too hilarious! But sexy or not, she did not have talent.

Mike Davis is an 18-year-old Actor from Boston. He’s currently an actor on a speedboat called Codzilla, Lol! He sang “Yesterday” by The Beatles. He’s got a really pretty voice and he’s likeable. Simon commented that he’s confident without being obnoxious. Kara loved him, Simon said yes, but Randy surprisingly said no. After Simon and Randy rudely got up and left because they wanted a break, the ladies said yes and Mike is going to Hollywood!

Katie Stevens

Katy Stevens is a 16-year-old high school student from Middlebury, Connecticut. She’s from a big Portuguese family and hers was the second sob story of the night because her Grandmother has Alzheimer’s. Katy did the obligatory performance of “At Last” during her audition. The difference? She sounded better than most people we’ve heard do it! Her voice is very strong for a 16-year-old. She definitely has a gift. Needless to say, she got the golden ticket and his headed to Hollywood!

Joshua Blaylock is a 28-year-old Business Development Manager from NYC. He, like Amadeo, is at the last chance age to audition for Idol. He came across as the obligatory Country Music star of the bunch. He’s got a really nice voice, but the judges thought he was too nice and should be more assertive. Because of that and because Simon thought his voice sounded younger than his age, Simon said no at first, but then changed his mind. In fact, all of the judges ended up saying yes and Joshua’s going to Hollywood! Btw, I think it’s just awful when nice people are shunned for being nice. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being nice. In fact, it’s the ways we all should be. I hate that our society rewards people for being mean, rude and nasty. Alright, off my soapbox now ;-)

Justin Williams

Justin Williams is a 27-year-old Vocal Coach from Sandy, Utah. He had the 3rd sob story of the night because he got cancer. To be clear, I say sob story because these stories highlight these contestants and make us feel closer to them than other contestants we don’t know much about. Justin is very goodlooking. He did a nice rendition of “Feeling Good”. He’s got a nice, smooth, soothing voice. Kara said that she’s gonna remember him…he’s going to Hollywood!

Idol hair guy

Norberto Guerrero is an 18-year-old Actor/Retail worker from Reading, Pennsylvania. He sang “Everytime We Touch” by Cascada. His voice was extremely weak. At first I thought it was weak because he was nervous, but more likely it’s because he really can’t sing and shouldn’t have been allowed to audition! Lol! His hair is extremely bad…So 80s hair band! And he had the nerve to say that he’s gonna be the next American Idol and is gonna inspire people like Michael Jackson inspired him! Simon put it best when he hilariously said that Norberto sings like a 3-year-old girl, dresses like Letoya Jackson and has a beard…the whole thing was just too weird. Needless to say, he did not get the golden ticket.

Bosa Mora

Bosa Mora is a 22-year-old College Graduate from Columbus, Ohio. His parents are from Nigeria, but met here in the States while attending school. Bosa is part of a big family and has 6 sisters and 1 brother. He has talent, but the judges didn’t think he was charismatic enough. Simon thought he was good, but boring. Victoria gave Simon a tongue lashing for being rude and then said yes to Bosa’s audition. Kara and Randy also said yes, so he’s going to Hollywood! As far as his charisma, I personally feel that Bosa could have that Seal appeal with an image and style upgrade. Btw, I mean the singer Seal, not the animal ;-)

And finally, Leah Laurenti Is a 22-year-old from Medford, Long Island, who’s unemployed. Leah had strict parents and a sheltered childhood. She couldn’t listen to secular music. She sang “Blue Skies” and was a little nervous at first, but eventually got her confidence and sounded strong and beautiful. She was soulful and jazzy at the same time. She’s going to Hollywood!

In all, 32 hopefuls from the Boston auditions are going to Hollywood. Wish I would have seen Antoine’s audition at the end where all judges but Simon said yes. He sounded like he had a powerful voice, but they only showed the part of the audition where the judges spoke. He’s going to Hollywood though, so I’ll get to hear him there. On tap for tonight’s Idol? The Atlanta auditions featuring Mary J. Blige! Remember, be sure to bookmark my blog and check back daily for all things Idol on The Shelley Wade Treatment!
