Crystal & Lee Battle It Out For The American Idol Title!

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

The 2-night American Idol Season 9 finale starts tonight. Crystal Bowersox & Lee DeWyze will sing 3 songs each tonight. The 1st will be the contestant’s favorite song of the season. The 2nd will be a song chosen by Idol Executive Producer Simon Fuller. And the 3rd will be the song they’ll release if they win. As the judges are shown on screen, I have to say that I’m pretty sad to see Simon Cowell go. Much has been made about the fact that viewership is down on the show this year. But the fact still remains, it’s consistently at the top of the ratings and never at the bottom. It’ll be interesting to see how Simon’s new “X-Factor” show performs up against Idol. Simon fans are already proclaiming that like Simon, they won’t be returning to Idol next season. Me? I’ll give it a chance. I’ll also be watching “X-Factor.” Alright…after winning a coin toss last week, Crystal has decided to perform 2nd. So up 1st, it’s…

Round 1: Contestant’s Choice

Lee DeWyze: For his favorite song of the season, Lee chose to sing the song “The Boxer.” I vaguely remember Lee performing this one during Inspirational Week. He sounds pretty okay singing it tonight. The performance wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t mind-blowing or even worthy of finale week. Randy said it was a great way to start it off, but that he wasn’t sure it was energetic or exciting enough. Ellen says he performed it better than he did the 1st time. Kara says it was a meaningful song & that he was believable performing it, but she also agrees with Randy that he needs to bring up his energy. Simon said that he would expect a lot more passion & excitement on such an important night. He says that it was like a kiss on the cheek when he wants a kiss on the lips!

Crystal Bowersox: Crystal chose her song from Billboard #1’s Week, “Me & Bobby McGee.” Crystal sounds great, as usual. She also had a little more energy than Lee & I like how she made the audience a part of her performance. In my opinion, she’s winner of Round 1 tonight! Randy agrees with me! He thought it was dope! Ellen said that Crystal is so compelling onstage & that she and her guitar fill up the room. She thought the performance was stunning. Kara loved it when Crystal 1st did it & she loved it tonight. She said that Crystal told us so much about herself as an artist tonight & she has fire in her belly. Simon said that the performance brought him back to the time when he absolutely fell in love with Crystal. He said that this was Crystal back on her best & that we’ve got a competition tonight!

Round 2: Simon Fuller’s Choice

Lee DeWyze: “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M. My 1st thought was that this was the perfect song for Lee. As much as I love acoustic guitars and all, I have to say that this show is really kind of boring tonight since Lee and Crystal are both playing acoustically & singing low key songs…so far. I agree with Randy, this show needs some energy or I’m gonna fall asleep! Again, I thought that Lee sounded good. He had a choir behind him again. My opinion on that is that choirs make anybody sound good. This competition should be judged on the contestant’s performance, not on the added benefit of the choir. Randy said that it started off a little pitchy, but that it was a lot better than the 1st one. Ellen said that a couple of times Lee got really into it & got everyone excited, but then he pulled back again. Kara says that what makes Lee great (not being a hater, but “great” must be relative) as a performer is that he’s emotionally accessible. She said it wasn’t a perfect vocal, but she loved his emotional accessibility. Simon thought it was a brilliant choice of song for Lee, but that he went off note a few times. He says that Lee is nervous & warned him to understand the importance of the night and come back to perform perfectly for his final song.

Crystal Bowersox: “Black Velvet.” I immediately like that she’s not playing a guitar. Her singing is really nice & gutsy on this song. She sounds great. She hit some great notes, but I wish she would have worked the stage just a little bit more. Randy said that this is what he fell in love with from day 1 and that Mama Sox is in it to win it! Since Crystal changed into a slinky black dress for this number, Ellen joked that the wardrobe changes made it feel like it was a Cher concert! Lol. She said the performance was fantastic. Kara said that tonight is the night to give it all and that’s what Crystal is doing. Simon said that he had a little bit of a problem because he’s almost allergic to that song from hearing it so much in auditions. I have to agree with him. As soon as I heard she was singing it, I was like, ‘This song again?!’ But she pulled it off! Simon says that Crystal took that song & absolutely nailed it! He said he was impressed. Round 2 goes to Crystal as well!

Round 3: The Song That’ll Be Released If They Win

Lee DeWyze: “Beautiful Day.” Wow, he’ll release a cover of U2’s song if he’s the Idol winner. I like that he’s not playing the guitar this time. Watching Lee perform this one, I can’t help but think of Bono & U2. Bono is such a unique performer. Lee, however, is just letting his nerves get the best of him tonight & just didn’t capture the magic of this song the way Bono does. He sounds decent, but there’s nothing exciting about hearing him or seeing him. I’m team Crystal all the way, but I didn’t want to see Lee come all this way just to choke like he did tonight. He had so much momentum coming into the week, but he disappointed. Sad. Randy said that the performance started off a little awkward, but that he was strong towards the end. Ellen said he did a great job. Kara said he got swallowed up a bit in the song. She said he had some good moments & some not so good moments. Simon said Lee made the most of it. Simon also pointed out that this is his final time ever judging on American Idol, so he wanted to say that this competition was designed for someone like Lee who’s worked hard and he wishes the best for him. But you notice that Simon didn’t actually say how he felt about Lee’s performance. That’s because Simon wants Lee to win & has already gone on the record as saying that Lee would win the competition. So for him to actually say that Lee sucked, wouldn’t go along with what he’s been saying for the last week or so.

Crystal Bowersox: “Up To The Mountain.” She returned to the stool with her acoustic guitar for this one. Although it’s another low key song, Crystal sounds soulful & stirring singing it. She was really feeling the song in her soul & it came across in her voice. I could see that she was close to tears at the end of the performance. She also had a choir, but they weren’t as noticeable because Crystal’s voice was so powerful. Randy said it was an amazing song by an amazing singer. He said he was proud of her because it was one of her best performances at the perfect time. He said it was incredible! Ellen said that she can’t compare Crystal to one contemporary artist out right now & that she’s in a league of her own. I guess so if you discount Melissa Etheridge, who has a new album out right now, btw. Ellen went on to say that Crystal has a beautiful voice. Kara said that this was a very important song for Crystal tonight. She said that if she had one critique of Crystal, it’s that at times her walls have been up. But she said that tonight, Crystal’s walls were down. She said that Crystal completely & emotionally invested in that song unlike any other night and for her, she really blossomed with that song. She said it was amazing. Crystal wished Simon luck on his future endeavors since this would be his final critique as judge on the show. Then Simon said that Crystal’s performance was by far her best performance & the best performance of the entire night. And to quote him verbatim, ‘Since this is going to be the final critique I’m ever gonna give, I would just like to say that was outstanding!’

And with that, the Simon Cowell era on American Idol is just about over. Can’t wait to see the big sendoff for him on the Results Show tomorrow. I was already pulling for Crystal to be the next American Idol and she clearly outperformed Lee DeWyze tonight in every round! She has been THE most consistently good contestant all season. If she doesn’t win the American Idol title tomorrow, it’s not because she doesn’t deserve it. There was no contest tonight…Crystal Bowersox was the better contestant & she’s so getting my vote!

The American Idol Top 3 Compete For A Spot In The Finale!

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

I think going into tonight, most people feel that Crystal Bowersox & Lee DeWyze will be in the Top 2 next week & that Casey James will be voted off during tomorrow’s Results Show. But let’s not write him off just yet until we see his performances tonight. The Top 3 will each perform 2 songs—one of their choice & the other chosen by the judges. First up…

Round 1: Contestants’ Choice

Casey James: His personal song choice was “Okay, It’s Alright With Me” by Eric Hutchinson. He said he chose the song because he loves it & when he heard it, he thought that it was a song he could have written. I have to agree with Casey, hearing him singing it sounds second nature. It’s a great song for his style & voice, but I’m not sure that his performance of it was enough for the judges on such an integral point in the competition. It didn’t blow me a way and we need to be blown away at this late stage in the game. Randy said that the lyrics were true because the song was just alright for him. He felt the song was too safe when the show’s down to the wire. Ellen agrees with Randy & said that she wished that Casey would have brought it because this was the night he needed to. Kara says that it’s hard to pick a song that not everybody knows, especially on a night where he has to be fighting for the competition. She thought that the song choice didn’t work in his favor. Simon said that it’s arguably the most important night of Casey’s life, but that he chose a song that will have no lasting effect on the audience. He warned that Casey’s lucky he has another song on the way to redeem himself. On the bright side, Simon told Casey that he sounded good, but that the song choice was a dud.

Crystal Bowersox: Her personal song choice was “Come To My Window” by Melissa Etheridge. This is a no brainer for Crystal! Since she 1st stepped onto the Idol stage this season, we’ve been comparing her to Melissa Etheridge, so it was a smart song choice for her. Btw, I’ve always LOVED this song! And I love that she performed it tonight by playing the guitar AND the harmonica! Amazingly, she still managed to make the song hers. Randy didn’t like the arrangement, but felt Crystal’s vocals made up for it & that it was a good song choice for her. Ellen thought that Melissa Etheridge would be very proud of Crystal’s performance. Kara felt that Crystal got a little lost in the arrangement, but that it was still a good vocal. She also says that Crystal’s capable of a big moment tonight & she hopes that she has one. Simon agreed with the other judges, but says that he likes that Crystal hasn’t compromised herself as an artist this season. He said it was a very honest performance & congratulated her for making the right song choice.

Lee DeWyze: His personal song choice was “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. He sounds really good singing this. And he looks far more comfortable onstage than he’s ever looked in the competition so far. I don’t think it was a phenomenal performance, but it was certainly the best of the night so far. He wasn’t fighting the music like Crystal had to and he wasn’t just okay like Casey was. He was a bit better than both of them…Although I’m still pulling for Crystal to win the competition, lol! Randy thought Lee made a brilliant song choice and that he sounded amazing singing it. Ellen said that she’s proud Lee’s come out of his shyness. Kara thought that Lee showed everything he had and said that Round 1 goes to Lee. I have to agree. Simon thought that the Crystal & Casey song choices were okay, but that Lee’s was absolutely on the money & brilliant. He went on to say that not only did Lee win Round 1, but that he crushed the competition.

Round 2: Judges’ Choice

Casey James: After showing footage of Casey’s Texas homecoming, it was revealed that Randy & Kara chose “Daughters” by John Mayer for Casey.

Randy thought that this song was a great direction for Casey. Kara says that Casey needs to show that vulnerable side to stay in the competition. She says that an artist has to know their audience & Casey’s audience is women & girls, which is why this song is perfect for him. I’ve been a fan of Casey’s since the beginning of the season. I think that he’s got a great voice and that he’s adorable, but I don’t think he was as vulnerable singing this song as he could have been. As much of a jerk that John Mayer can be, he moves me when he sings this song. Casey sounded great, but I wasn’t as moved. Randy felt that the song fit Casey like a glove. Ellen thought the song was beautiful for Casey. Kara said that the song showed the more artistic side of Casey & that he did a good job. Simon thought it was a much better song choice than the first one, but that the arrangement of the song was poor. He said he sounded very good, but that the song didn’t have the wow factor. He argued that Randy & Kara didn’t work with Casey enough to give the song more of a climax, but Randy & Kara defended themselves by saying the song isn’t meant to have a climax.

Crystal Bowersox: After seeing footage of Crystal’s homecoming in Ohio, we found out that Ellen chose for Crystal to sing Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed.” Ellen thought that this song choice would show Crystal’s range.

Crystal performed this one guitarless. It was kind of odd to hear her singing that she was a man since she didn’t change Paul McCartney’s lyrics, but I got over it. I expected her to sing the song a little more tenderly, but she ended up belting out many of her lines like Janis Joplin. She sounded good, but I’ve heard Crystal sound better. But I do give her tons of credit for not holding back…she sang with all her heart! Randy thought it was a great song, great vocals & that Crystal showed she is in it to win it! Ellen said she couldn’t have asked for more. She said Crystal did what she was hoping she would do when she chose the song for her. Kara said that Crystal didn’t change the song up that much, but what she did with it was showed parts of her voice that we haven’t heard. She said that she did a lot of risky things like performing with no guitar & singing different notes and it paid off. Simon was surprised with the song choice, but that Crystal proved that she’s got soul when she sang it. He said she worked outside of her comfort zone and that she may be thanking Ellen for putting her into the finals next week.

Lee DeWyze: After showing footage from Lee’s homecoming in Chicago, it was revealed that Simon chose “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen. I can’t remember who sang this song at the beginning of this season, but I remember them singing it beautifully.

Lee sounds great, but is it fair that he’s got a whole choir & what sounds like an orchestra backing him up? It just sounds like he had a little more help than the other 2 contestants, lol. I think it was a moving performance, but the thing that made it more moving for me was the choir & the musicians in the background. Randy says that it was unbelievable. Ellen says it was stunning. Kara said that Lee is what the show is all about. She said he was the heart of the show this season & that he owned the entire night. Simon says that Lee proved he is a fantastic performer & a great person & he hopes that he makes it into the Top 2.

From listening to the judges, it sounds like they have already given the American Idol title to Lee. And I am fine with them being fans of contestants, but judges do sway votes and they need to be more cognizant of that when making their comments at this pivotal point in the competition. That said, I do think that Lee had a better night than the other 2 contestants. But they may have sounded “epic” too if they had a choir & orchestra behind them. Tomorrow, we find out which one of the 3 will be going home. Justin Bieber & Travis Garland will also perform!

Harry Connick Jr. & Lady Gaga Sing As The Latest Idol Is Voted Off!

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Watching the Top 5 perform their Sinatra medley, I have to admit that I’m a little miffed that there’s only one woman left on the show. What’s the deal with that cuz chicks rule! Lol.

They could easily fit this Results Show into 30 minutes, but they choose to stretch it out for an entire hour by playing a bunch of fluff & with Ryan trying to be funny. But it was good to see what happens behind the scenes on Tuesdays with the contestants.

Lee Dewyze was the 1st brought to center stage. Lee was the one that the judges thought did the best last night. But I thought that he & Big Mike were head to head. Lee sounded great, but his stage presence was lacking for me. He seemed more comfortable than before, but it certainly wasn’t a master class in stage presence. No surprise, though, that Lee is safe & will be in the Top 4 next week.

I LOVE Lady Gaga! So I’m super excited that she’s back on the show tonight. Gaga has told me that she grew up listening to me on the radio, which made me feel old at 1st…until I realized that when I got to NYC 9 years ago, she had to have been 15-years-old. So that made me feel a little better, lol. Anyway, I did a quick interview with Gaga last year & you can watch it on The Shelley Wade Treatment segment of this site by CLICKING HERE! That said, I loved Gaga’s performance of “Alejandro” tonight. Since seeing what crazy outfit she’s gonna where is just as big a part of the experience as watching her performance, I’ve gotta describe what she wore…A black fishnet & lace body suit that also covered her entire face up to her blond hairline. She topped that off with a shear cape, which she ditched halfway through the performance. And even though she wore all of that, she still managed to show almost all of her skin, lol!

But she definitely brought the drama, playing the piano AND doing full on choreography with her scantily clad male dancers. Entertaining indeed!

After a break, they gave us more fluff with a behind the scenes look at Harry Connick Jr.’s mentoring of the Idols. But I didn’t mind because Harry’s so funny! One thing he said was that he’s got a bone to pick with the judges for saying that the contestants are “pitchy” so much. Harry said that they should say “out of tune,” not “pitchy.” Wow, well he showed them, lol! But seriously, Randy wouldn’t have anything to say this season if they took the word “pitchy” out of is repertoire, lol! He’s been saying that this season more than he says “dawg”! After that, Harry performed his song “And I Love Her.” His voice is still smooth like butter and his orchestra sounded beautiful. Loved the performance…as usual! And bonus treat…the Top 5 sang a medley of some of Harry’s hits as he accompanied them! Afterwards, Harry told a really cute story about the 1st time he met Frank Sinatra, then announced that he & his band will be performing on Broadway for 11 dates starting July 15th….gotta take in a few of those shows!

Back from the break, time to find out who else is safe & who’s going home. I knew that Crystal Bowersox would be safe, but I’m shocked that Casey James wasn’t in the bottom! I mean, I like Casey, but the judges gave him a tongue lashing last night! That means that Big Mike & Aaron are the Bottom 2 this week.

After the final break, we find out that Aaron Kelly is the contestant going home. This doesn’t surprise me since Big Mike had such a great performance last night. Aaron’s an adorable kid & he did such a great job this season ☺

Next week, the Top 4 (Michael Lynche, Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze & Casey James) will sing Songs of the Cinema with Jamie Foxx mentoring!

Harry Connick, Jr. Mentors As The Idols Sing The Songs Of Sinatra!

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

I can’t tell you enough how SUPER EXCITED I am that Harry Connick Jr.’s mentoring the American Idol Top 5 tonight! Harry has been one of my favorites for years & years. I was even devastated when Harry married his wife☺. I mean, he could’ve waited for me! But I understand…she was a Victoria’s Secret model, lol! For the newbies, Harry was the precursor to Michael Buble. But seriously, he’s extremely talented & the Idols are lucky to have the chance to work with him. Not only did he mentor them, but he arranged their performances & will be accompanying them on piano during their live performances with some of his band members.

Harry’s perfect to mentor the Idols as they sing songs from The Frank Sinatra Songbook. The old standards that Harry sings & that Frank sang are some of my favorite songs ever. This is a special night for me! Btw, Sinatra’s daughters Nancy & Tina were in the audience tonight and they had a special gift for Simon! Turns out, Simon’s a big Frank Sinatra fan, so they were so kind to bring him their Dad’s “F.A.S.” monogrammed hanky…how exciting is that?!

Aaron Kelly: Harry’s always been a funny & playful guy, so he had jokes when Aaron 1st walked in the room…he yelled out, ‘Big Mike!’, lol! Aaron’s singing “Fly Me To The Moon”…completely awesome song! Harry gave him advice on transitioning from a note to fit the chords being played by the band. He says he really likes Aaron & that he’s got such a sweet voice. Harry’s right, Aaron’s got a sweet voice. He doesn’t sound bad singing this song. But to be singing a song with such hopeful & playful lyrics about love, his demeanor onstage was just way too serious for me. He sounded decent though. Randy thought he did a really good job. Ellen joked that she thought the piano was a little pitchy, which got a big laugh from Harry, lol! Ellen thought he really pulled the performance off & had beautiful vocals. Kara thought it was good, but thinks it wasn’t as strong compared to last week. Kara suggested that Aaron learn a little more charisma & how to fill up the stage. I guess that was a little along the lines of what I mentioned. He really needs to interpret the words of the song better. His facial expressions & presence onstage just didn’t match the message of the song in my opinion. But Kara did say that she expected to see Aaron still on the show next week. Simon mentioned that he’ll treasure his Sinatra hanky for the rest of his life! He said that he adored Frank because he was the king of cool with a swagger & a believability. He said that if Frank was a lion, Aaron was just a mouse. Again, along the same line of thought that I mentioned. These kids have it hard tonight because we’re gonna be thinking about Frank Sinatra with every note they try to hit & with every step they take onstage. Frank’s singing was amazing & his stage presence was full of confidence. But Simon ended by saying that Aaron tries hard and that’s why people like him.

Casey James: Casey says he’s been listening to Harry his whole life, so it was totally awesome to work with him! Casey chose to sing “Blue Skies.” Of all the contestants, I worried this week that Casey’s bluesy sound wouldn’t do well with singing these old standards. But Harry said that he thought Casey would do great. He said that it doesn’t seem to be about the lyrics with Casey, but it’s about being the vehicle for his blues. That’s odd to say since lyrics are so important to the song & a singer’s interpretation of them. But I trust Harry’s instincts & musical opinions because he’s so brilliant musically. He says that sometimes it’s not about the lyrics, but about the groove. I have to say that after his performance…I was pleasantly surprised that Casey didn’t sound terrible! I mean, it was nothing near to how Sinatra would sound, but it wasn’t horrendous. Randy thought it was Casey’s worst performance, wow. Ellen thought the performance was very stiff. Kara said that it took Casey a long time to relax, but that at least he held some good notes. But then she said he sounded like a lamb…I don’t think that’s a compliment! Simon said that Casey wasn’t fantastic & that he came across as embarrassed and a bit awkward. Btw, Harry mentioned that Casey sang the song better in rehearsals earlier in the night. Wow, rough judging session for Casey.

~Sidebar~ Sir Anthony Hopkins was in the Idol audience 2nite!

Crystal Bowersox: Singing “Summer Wind.” I love Nat “King” Cole’s version of this song. Harry said that what he liked about Crystal’s interpretation was that she was singing about something personal. He actually didn’t have much mentoring advice for Crystal because he felt that she was already ready. Huge compliment! And she looked beautiful with her updo & her black, lacy evening gown! Crystal not only looked the part, but she sang the song well. Her voice sounded great with the big band…the music didn’t over power her. She sang strong when the band got big & she sang soft & tender when the song called for it. She was just great. She could’ve fit right into a smoky piano bar singing jazz tunes! And although we’re used to comparing her to Melissa Etheridge & Bonnie Raitt, Crystal showed that she’s versatile enough to sing the old standards too! And all along, she remained true to who she is as an artist because she made the song hers! And that’s why you gotta love Crystal Bowersox! Randy thought it was just okay & a little sleepy for him. Ellen wanted her to loosen up more, but said that Crystal has so many different sides to her, that it’s really impressive. Kara said that it was out of Crystal’s element, but she kind of liked it because she had great phrasing. Simon loved the song, but wasn’t sure if he would’ve chosen it for Crystal. He said the 1st half was too jazzy, but the 2nd half was better. The judges weren’t as impressed with her as I was!

Michael Lynche: Singing “The Way You Look Tonight.” Harry says that this is one of his favorite songs. He suggests that with a song as wonderful as this, you don’t have to mess with the melody too much. He told Michael to think about his wife when he sings this song so that the words are true for him. Michael sounded lovely, as usual. It’s funny how every time he starts singing another line, Big Mike has to lick his lips! Lol, watch out LL Cool J! Randy thought that Harry’s arrangement was unbelievable and that Big Mike’s vocals were unbelievable! Ellen says that Mike seems to have the most confidence onstage compared to the other contestants. She said he looked the part, he sounded the part, he had lots of charisma, smoothness & was very good. Kara said that Mike found the drama in the song…he took us up, he took us down & took us on a journey. She said he did everything right, including not losing himself in the song. Simon said that the 1st three performances were just okay, but that Big Mike’s performance was better. He said that everything worked, was fantastic & well done!

Lee Dewyze: Singing “That’s Life.” Harry says that he likes Lee a lot & that his wife thinks he’s really cute! He joked that Lee is a new & improved version of him! The advice Harry had for Lee was to make sure he emphasized certain words in the song while singing them so that the audience really knows the story of what he’s been through. Lee sounded pretty good singing this song. It was a good song choice for him, but I wish that his stage presence was a little more commanding. The song was a good fit for his personality though. Randy loved Lee’s performance. Ellen said that if this was the last night of performances, Lee would’ve just won the whole thing. Hmm, I wouldn’t agree with that because Big Mike’s stage presence & vocals were better than Lee’s. Kara thought the performance was amazing & suggested that Lee practice believing that he can win the contest. Simon said that Harry brought out Lee’s personality & his confidence. Simon thought it was the best performance of the night.

It was a great evening! Harry was the most fun & informative mentor so far this season & I can’t wait to see him performing on Idol 2morrow night. Lady Gaga will also return to the Idol stage 2morrow. Going strictly from the judges’ comments, Casey, Aaron & Crystal may wind up in the Bottom 3. And if I were a betting woman, I’d say Casey will be the one going home. Aaron would be my next choice to go home. Results Show is tomorrow.

Who Was Voted Off On Idol Gives Back Night?

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

It was an incredibly moving evening for Idol Gives Back. Before the show was over, $17 million had already been raised for lots of great causes. Tons of celebs, corny Ryan Seacrest acting & great performances were also featured.

My favorite performance was the last one of the evening from Elton John. The picture above was actually of him during rehearsals. It was my favorite performance because he sang his classic “Your Song” and I found myself crying during the entire song because I’ve always thought the lyrics were so beautiful. I should hope that someone would want to write such pretty little song for me one day :-)

But after all the good deeds, it was time for someone to go home. As the Bottom 3 stood onstage, Aaron Kelly was sent to safety. That left Casey James & Tim Urban still standing. Then Ryan announced the best news EVER…

Tim Urban is finally going home! I don’t mean to be negative on such a giving night as Idol Gives Back, but Tim should have gone home long time ago. Too bad for the Vote For The Worst people…

It didn’t work this time…Goodbye my fellow Texan! He’s adorable & all, but it was time. Tim Urban is gone! Still on the Idols Live Tour unfortunately, but no longer on the show..yay!

Next week, Shania Twain will mentor the Top 6 with the theme being her music.

Alicia Keys Mentors The Idols!

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

That’s Alicia Keys & the Top 7! Since this is the week of Idol Gives Back, I thought it was a great idea to have Alicia Keys mentor the Idols tonight. She’s not only an extremely talented artist who can give good advice on the performer side of things, but she’s also given tirelessly of her time for her Keep A Child Alive charity.

Casey James: Singing “Don’t Stop” by Fleetwood Mac (Sidebar, check out my interview with Mick Fleetwood in The Shelley Wade Treatment section of this site). Alicia suggested that because the song is so well known, people may dismiss Casey’s rendition of it if he doesn’t really connect with the song. She says that he doesn’t want them to say, ‘I love THAT SONG.’ You want them so say, ‘I love HIM.’ Good advice. I agree that this is a classic song. And Casey’s doing a great job making the song his. He sounds good singing it & playing his guitar. I also love that he’s comfortable & connecting with the audience with his smile. Randy feels like it was a good performance, but not Casey’s best. He says that every week we’re seeing the same thing from Casey & he’d like to see something different. I kinda agree. Ellen says it was great guitar playing. She says that Casey’s consistently good, but that you have to be great at this point in the competition. Kara says that Casey made himself like everybody else tonight & didn’t show us why he’s different. She says she’s so frustrated about that because she still believes in him. Simon says that the song wasn’t particularly inspiring being that it’s Inspirational Week. He also said that Casey showed zero emotion & had little originality. I disagree with Simon’s opinion that Casey showed zero personality. But I understand what they all mean. Casey’s really talented, but he doesn’t stand out as the most talented contestant. He’s got good personality, but he’s not the one with the most personality. So when you fall somewhere in the middle, you don’t stand out sometimes.

Lee Dewyze: Singing “The Boxer” by Simon & Garfunkel. Alicia had Lee recite the lyrics to really drive home to him the meaning of the song. She suggested that he really remember what the song is about & to play the part of the boxer in the song while performing. I like Lee, but I’m not normally blown away with his performances like the judges always seem to be. I have to say though, tonight he really connected with me through this song. I could really feel the sincerity of his performance. He sounded great too. Randy says that Lee’s performance was very nice & that he’s one of his biggest fan. He also thinks that Lee will have a big career ahead of him. Ellen said it was a beautiful song choice. She says that Lee has so much soul & depth to him and that this was his best performance by far in her opinion. Kara said that Lee had his “moment” tonight. She also says that it shows clearly the difference when somebody feels connected to a song & performs it…and when they don’t. She advised him to keep singing songs he feels connected to because it takes him to another level. Simon says that even though he’s only the 2nd performer, it was the best of the night (ha ha). He said that the difference between Lee & Casey’s performance was staggering because Lee’s performance was sincere, emotional & inspirational. He thought the performance was absolutely brilliant. And well all know that it takes a lot to get that kind of glowing review from Simon!

~Sidebar~Captain Sully was in the audience…yay! Btw, I want Captain Sully to be my pilot every time I fly, lol!

Tim Urban: Singing “Better Days” by The Goo Goo Dolls. She gave Tim pretty much the same advice that she gave to Lee…take care to feel the lyrics & what the song’s about. It’s no secret that I feel that Tim has the least vocal talent out of everyone in the competition this season. That said, he sounds decent singing this song. His notes are a little suspect when he tries to sing a little higher, but he kept it within the boundaries & didn’t lose control. He also did a good job with relaying the feeling of the song. His performance wasn’t as inspiring at Lee’s, but Lee can actually sing, so we can’t go comparing the two too much, now can we. Randy says that John Resnick of the Goo Goo Dolls is an amazing singer, but that Tim’s version sounded like mediocre karaoke. Ellen says that Tim is like the soup of the day…sometimes she likes the soup & sometimes she doesn’t, lol. Tonight, she didn’t like the soup! Kara says that Tim’s found his correct lane, so he’s going the right direction. But she didn’t feel he executed the performance well tonight. She said it wasn’t his best performance. Simon said that although Tim has improved over the weeks, tonight was a little bit of a letdown. I will give this to Tim…I agree with Simon that he’s improved over the weeks. But that’s saying nothing as far as I’m concerned. There were tons of contestants that they eliminated during Hollywood Week that could sing circles around Tim! Heck, the contestants from the Top 24 that have been voted off these past few weeks could sing circles around Tim! So I’m not impressed at all that he’s improved over the weeks. How bout having someone on the show who’s already good & doesn’t have to work at proving that he’s good!

Aaron Kelly: Singing “I Believe I Can Fly” by R. Kelly. My immediate thought was this is a song that Aaron could really sound good singing. Alicia felt that Aaron had a challenge on his hands because this is one of those songs that could almost be overkill to some. She suggested that he should sound deep, pure & passionate while singing it. She also says that when he sings the word “fly” at the end, the audience has to believe that there’s nothing that’s gonna stop him. She says that if he could almost be crying at the end of the song, then he’ll take it to another place! I always have this sense that Aaron’s notes are weak at the beginning of his songs. But he always manages to pull it out & deliver a solid performance at the end. This time though, he was off key with so many of his notes. And as inspirational as this song always is, I just wasn’t inspired hearing Aaron singing it. And that surprises me because in theory, it seemed like a good song choice for him. I kept waiting for him to reach that feel good climax in the song, but it never came. I guess you could say that I was never satisfied, lol. Randy says that this was a huge song for Aaron to chose. He didn’t like the musical arrangement, but felt that Aaron did a good job with such a giant song. Ellen said that there was a brief time in the 70s that she believed she could fly, lol. I’m sure a lot of people feel that way today since it’s 420 and all ;-) She said that it was a tough song to take on, but that she thought Aaron handled it real good. Kara says that watching the performance was like taking off on a flight…it was kinda slow & stalling at the beginning, but he finally took off & got there by the end. Hmm, I just didn’t feel he pulled it off in the end…didn’t happen for me this time. Simon says that Aaron had guts to take on this song & that he gave it his all. However, he said that he would have turned it off within 10 seconds if he would have heard it on the radio. So in other words, he gave it his best, but his best wasn’t good enough.

Siobhan Magnus: Singing “When You Believe” by Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey. Alicia said that it’s not an easy feat to sing this song. She says that she’s very impressed with Siobhan’s voice because she’s doing things that not many people can do. She suggested that Siobhan take a dramatic pause at the point in the song where she sings a big note so that everyone knows this is a special moment. Siobhan had just an awful performance last week, so it’s good to hear her sing a song that goes well with her voice. The judges have made a big deal about the screaming she does, but I think she sounds best when she sings really pretty, melodic songs like this. This song really showcases the beauty of her voice. I think it could have sounded a tad more exciting like when Whitney & Mariah performed it, but that’ll take a few years before Siobhan is at that level of showmanship. She did much better this week though…much better! Randy said that she picked the toughest song of the night & he didn’t agree with the song choice. He said her performance was just okay for him. Ellen disagreed & said that Siobhan choosing a difficult song is just more confirmation as to why she’s in the competition. Kara said that technically it may have been really well sung, but it was way too dramatic for her like a musical. Now I have to disagree with Kara on that one. This song was from the “Prince of Egypt” soundtrack & it was meant to be dramatic! Whatever. Simon also didn’t like the song choice & thought it was a bit all over the place. Um, hello…Did these people hear how pretty she sounded singing it? Geez!

Michael Lynche: Singing “Hero” by Chad Kroeger. Alicia loved that Michael chose this song & is singing his own rendition of it. She suggested that Big Mike bring the audience along on the ride during the performance & take them to the highest point. I loved how Michael sounded at the beginning of the song because it was really moving & tender. I felt that he was really connecting with the song. But when all of the instruments came in, I didn’t feel as touched. It was a pretty good performance though. Randy said that he was really concerned about this song choice for Michael, but that he held his own & it worked out in the end. Ellen says she thought he did a great job. Kara said it wasn’t her favorite performance by Michael. She didn’t feel he had the correct tone for the song, so it was unrecognizable for her. Simon says that Mike sang the song pretty well, but that the song was about Spiderman so it bothered him, lol. But he said that he still thinks Mike’ll be around next week.

Crystal Bowersox: Singing “People Get Ready” by Curtis Mayfield. Alicia says that Crystal is very very special & is one of her favorites. I was kinda blown away with just how gorgeous Crystal’s voice sounded singing the song acapella at the beginning! I mean, I’ve always thought she had a gorgeous voice, but this was the 1st time that she put it on display without instruments accompanying her. She stood there onstage without her guitar & just sang her heart out! Nobody can compare her to Melissa Etheridge or Bonnie Raitt tonight! This girl is still my pick to win the entire season! Oh my God, and she cried at the end of the performance…aww :-) She said she got so emotional because she was happy to see her dad in the audience tonight! Randy said it was unbelievable & gave her a standing ovation! Ellen said that Crystal has never looked more beautiful. She also said the performance was so beautiful. Kara said that Crystal took a risk by putting down her guitar tonight. She said that she was on another level & schooled all the rest of the contestants! Simon said THAT was inspirational. He said he was happy to see Crystal being emotional tonight & that she sang it fantastically. He said she was in an entirely different class from everything he’s heard tonight.

Crystal Bowersox had THE BEST performance of the night. Anyone who says differently is obviously too high because of 420, lol. Here’s the deal on tomorrow’s show…

This year, IDOL GIVES BACK will broadcast live from the AMERICAN IDOL stage and the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, where Queen Latifah will emcee the evening and some of music’s biggest stars, including Carrie Underwood, The Black Eyed Peas, Annie Lennox, Jeff Beck & Joss Stone and Mary J. Blige & the All-Star Band, will perform. In addition, the week’s voting results will be revealed, sending one of the finalists home.

Which 2 Contestants Were Voted Off American Idol? Here Are The Results!

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

After 34 million votes, 2 contestants will be leaving the American Idol Season 9 Top 9 tonight in a double elimination! Adam Lambert, Brooke White & Justin Gaston are all performing tonight.

The contestants kicked off the show by singing a medley of Elvis Presley songs. As I’m watching them perform, I could swear that they’re lip syncing. Hmm, that’s kinda not cool. Btw, I saw a story on the news earlier this week where some singers in China were charged $7,500 dollars for illegal lip syncing…that’s right, lip syncing is against the law in China! Lol! Can you imagine how many American artists would be fined if we outlawed lip syncing?! Wow.

After a break, they showed the contestants in a new Ford commercial. The results followed with Casey James, Aaron Kelly & Andrew Garcia all being brought to center stage. Andrew was told that it’s the end of the road for him.

The camera immediately pans to a sad Lee Dewyze since he & Andrew have become the best of friends. This is sad because at the beginning of the season, I could have sworn that Andrew would have been a serious contender for the title of American Idol. But along the way, he lost his luster. Casey & Aaron are told they’re safe as Andrew sings his goodbye performance.

After another break, touching footage was shown from a trip that judge Kara DioGuardi took to Africa with Season 5 contestant Elliott Yamin in honor of Idol Gives Back. Then Season 7 contestant Brooke White performed a duet with Justin Gaston. You may remember Justin from a few different things…he briefly dated Miley Cyrus, he starred as the love interest in Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” video, He was in the “Nashville Star” Season 6 & he’s currently on the interactive web series “If I Can Dream.”

After yet another break, more results are revealed. Tim Urban, Crystal Bowersox, Michael Lynche, Katie Stevens, Siobhan Magnus & Lee Dewyze were all told to join Ryan at center stage. Crystal was told she was safe. The same for Siobhan who, in my opinion, had the worst performance of last night. Lee was also told he was safe. That left Tim, Big Mike & Katie Stevens onstage. Judging from lack of talent alone, Tim should be the one going home. But we won’t find out if he or one of the other two goes home until after Adam Lambert performs.

After a break, Season 8 runner up & this week’s mentor Adam Lambert performed his hit “What Do You Want From Me.” I love that he brought lots of drama at the beginning of the song by singing it slowly in abstract lights, lasers & fog. Adam looks great tonight! The guyliner is still serious, but not overdone. I thought the dark, mysterious lighting was cool for the beginning of the song, but they could have lit the stage a little brighter for the rest of the performance. Adam was probably the best mentor on Idol so far this season. He really gave some great pointers to the contestants. Btw, Adam’s got a new “Remixes” EP on sale now.

After a final break, we get back to the final 3 contestants standing… Tim, Mike & Katie. Tim was told he was safe, which means someone more talented than him is going home tonight. Ryan reveals that Big MIke wasn’t even in the Bottom 3 this week, which means he really redeemed himself this week after being saved from elimination by the judges last week. And that vote of confidence from Adam Lambert last night that Big Mike should be a contender for American Idol, sure didn’t hurt. I’m sure that won him a lot of Adam Lambert fan votes. That means that little Katie Stevens is going home :-(

Katie’s really talented & as young as she is, was one of the most vocally talented contestants of this season. As she sang her goodbye song, she was a little choked up and her voice trembled & cracked a bit.

And there you have it…Andrew Garcia & Katie Stevens were the 2 contestants voted off this week. That done, here’s the 1st official photo of the new Top 7!

Next week in honor of Idol Gives Back, the Top 7 will sing Inspirational songs while Alicia Keys mentors them!

Also, Elton John will sing next Wednesday during “Idol Gives Back” on behalf of his AIDS Foundation. He joins Carrie Underwood, Black Eyed Peas, Annie Lennox, Jeff Beck, Joss Stone and Mary J. Blige. Btw, Queen Latifah will be co-hosting the Idol Gives Back festivities!

Adam Lambert Mentors Idol’s Top 9 As They Perform Elvis Hits!

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

That’s once again The American Idol Season 9 Top 9. Simon, Kara, Ellen & Randy chose to use the Judges’ Save to keep Big Mike on the show. As a result, 2 of the Idol contestants will be voted off on the Results Show tomorrow.

Season 8 runner up returns to the Idol Adam Lambert mentors the contestants tonight! Adam looked nice & streamlined today…possibly even conservative by his style standards! Since they’re performing songs from the legendary Elvis Presley tonight, the contestans were treated to a trip to Las Vegas to take in a performance of Cirque du Soleil’s “Viva Elvis” show! It was in Vegas where Adam met the Idols…

Crystal Bowersox: Adam thinks that Crystal has an awesome voice! He says it’s so authentic, so real & that you can tell it comes from the heart. The Elvis song Crystal chose to sing tonight was “Saved” because she liked the idea of doing one of his gospel-inspired songs. Adam suggested that she sing it with an electric guitar because he believed in doing something fresh every time he performed during his season of Idol. He also suggested that she let her dreadlocks down! Crystal took Adam’s advice to perform with an electric guitar, but she ignored the advice of letting her hair down. I felt she sang with lots of energy & soul. It was a typical Crystal Bowersox performance to me. Nothing new or exciting, but perfectly her at the same time. I wouldn’t mind seeing something new from her, but I also don’t want her to run the risk of not being authentic to herself. Randy loved her energy! He said it was like he was listening to someone’s record & that she was like the 2nd coming of Bonnie Raitt. Ellen said that she was tired of telling Crystal how great she is, so she wanted to take the time to say happy birthday to anyone in the audience, lol! She thought it was fantastic. Kara said it was another solid performance. She loved the up tempo & switch up in the arrangement. Simon said that he loved that she didn’t choose an obvious song…she chose something that suited her & she put her own slant on it. He said that most importantly, she didn’t fall into the Elvis karaoke trap that he expected from some of the contestants tonight.

Andrew Garcia: Adam said that when he found out that Andrew would be singing “Hound Dog,” he was really looking forward to it because it’s a great Elvis classic. But he said that Andrew left him wanting more during rehearsals. Adam was honest with Andrew & told him that he was bored with his rendition of the song. He suggested that it needed more punch & encouraged him to change the song up & make it his. Adam says that Andrew has the potential to be great, but he needs to step his game up. Andrew chose to sing without his guitar this time. I tend to like Andrew’s performances with his guitar more since he comes across a little more natural & authentic with it. Although Andrew’s version of “Hound Dog” was different tonight, it didn’t blow me away. It wasn’t one of his best performances, but it also wasn’t one of his worst. He seemed a lot more comfortable & relaxed onstage without his guitar than he normally is and he sounded pretty good. Randy didn’t like the performance at all & thought it was a karaoke performance. Ellen wished that Andrew would have put a little more swagger into the performance, but she liked how he changed the song up & though he pulled the performance off. Kara said that you have to own the stage like Elvis did. That said, she thought that Andrew used the microphone as a crutch instead of opening up & owning his performance. She said there were some nice parts where he changed up the melody, but that she wanted more from him. Simon thought the performance was lazy, unpredictable & didn’t feel like the star performance. He felt that all of his coolness was sucked out of him.

Tim Urban: Tim chose to sing Elvis’ hit “Can’t Help Falling In Love” tonight. Adam thought he did a really lovely job singing it during rehearsals. He said that he had a really good sound to his voice & he did some really pretty good guitar work. Adam suggested that Tim sing the ending of the song in a higher octave to make him sound more vulnerable, which he thought took Tim out of his comfort zone. For some reason, I felt that singing Elvis would be a good fit for Tim. I’m not the biggest fan of Tim’s talent (or lack there of), but I thought that this would be a good fit for him. That said, he sounded decent singing this song. His female fans will love how romantic this song is. Needless to say, his vocals didn’t blow me away, but he did a pretty good job. Randy said he actually liked Tim’s performance. Ellen said that the 1st time she took a shot of tequila, she didn’t like it. But after taking several shots, she like it. She said that’s how she feels about Tim, lol! She thought his performance was beautiful. Kara said it was probably her favorite Tim performance ever. She said it was authentic, real & meaningful. Simon said that Tim managed to go from zero to hero in 2 weeks. He said that he’s growing in confidence & has taken the judges advice well. I’m so torn with Tim because yes…this Elvis Week suited his style & voice. But he’s certainly no hero.

Lee Dewyze: Adam says that Lee is great, but that there’s nothing going on with his personality. He urged Lee to perform the song with personality, smile & connect a little more. He chose to sing Elvis’ “A Little Less Conversation.” Lee’s performance certainly isn’t an Elvis impression. He put his own stamp on the song & made it his. He looked comfortable onstage & sounded pretty good. His performance didn’t blow me away personality-wise, but it was decent. Randy said that Lee is definitely in the zone & that it was another great performance. I don’t know if I’d categorize it as “great”, but to each his own. Ellen said that he made the song more current & made it sound like a brand new song. She also liked his confidence. Kara said that Lee really went for it vocally tonight & she really loved it. But she wishes that he were more playful & less serious. Simon said that Lee nailed the song & that it was on the money.

Aaron Kelly: Adam said that he had underestimated Aaron, but that he found his voice to be really great! Adam suggested Aaron believe in himself more & be more aggressive while singing “Blue Suede Shoes.” I always feel that there are a few off notes at the beginning of Aaron’s performance. It’s almost like he’s nervous at the beginning & it affects his voice, but he gets really comfortable & confident in the middle & end. It sounded good tonight though. I liked that he engaged the audience more by walking out closer to them. I also loved that the song started off fast & then changed up into this soulful, bluesy rendition. Nice touch! Randy thought it started off weak, but liked the ending of the song. He said he wished he would’ve sang it the bluesy way the entire song. Ellen thought it was a big song to take on, so she gave him an “A” for effort. She thought he didn’t take it all the way there, but that he did a good job. Kara felt that Aaron was out of his comfort zone & she really liked it! She thought he sounded younger & current. Simon, on the other hand, thought it was very old fashioned. He said it was like a high school concert & was very karaoke. I notice that Aaron sneezed several times during the judges’ comments…wonder if he’s got a cold, or if he’s suffering from allergies like so many people are at this time of year? And it was so funny, they showed an allergy commercial right afterwards, lol.

Siobhan Magnus: Siobhan has been called “the Adam Lambert of this season,” so it was pretty interesting to see them finally meeting up! Siobhan says that she’s a true Elvis fan & even did a report on him when she was in the 6th grade! She chose to sing “Suspicious Minds ” tonight. Adam thought she Siobhan had the pipes, but that she came across a little sleepy. He suggested that she sing it a bit faster. Siobhan has a really nice voice & looks fabulous tonight. But the way she’s singing the song tonight seems a little “Glee” like. No offense to “Glee” fans, but it seems way more Broadway than Elvis. That said, I do like some of the notes she hit tonight without screaming & I liked the little change up in the song towards the end. Randy thought she took some chances & risks, but felt the ending of the song was better than the beginning. Ellen though the same thing about the 2nd part of the song. They both agree that she has a beautiful voice. Kara says that Siobhan is confusing her with her two different voices. She also says that she wasn’t crazy about the performance. Simon said it was like she was put into a time machine & she came back in 20 years time. He thought the 1st part of the song was terrible, then erratic & screechy towards the end. He feels that Siobhan has lost who she is and that it wasn’t one of her best performances.

Michael Lynche: Michael said that Siobhan suggested he sing Elvis’ “In The Ghetto” tonight. He listened to it, loved it & chose to sing it. Adam suggested that Michael step up his storytelling for the performance. He also says that there’s a lot riding on Michael’s performance tonight since the judges saved him last week. But he thinks that if he really connects with people’s hearts, he could redeem himself. He says that Michael is an amazing singer & deserves to make it to the end of the competition. Well that vote of confidence should win some Adam Lambert fans’ votes for Michael! Michael sounds good to me tonight. I thought his emotions in the song were raw, real & touching. But for some reason, I was almost expecting him to pick up the pace of the song & make the 2nd part of it fast. Not sure why I expected that. It was a good performance to me, but not exciting enough to completely take our minds off the fact that he was almost voted off the show last week. Randy says the song was a little sleepy for him, but this is a singing competition & his vocals were hot! Ellen says she’s glad the judges saved Mike last week. Kara said it was a beautiful song & that he definitely sang it well. Simon says that Mike’s performance was a million billion times better than last week’s. He says it was a terrific choice of songs & that it was one of his favorite performances of Mike’s.

Katie Stevens: Adam suggested that Katie showed anger in her performance since she’s a little irritated with the judges’ comments about her lately. Adam says that Katie’s got the pipes, she’s got the looks, now she just needs to make us believe it. Katie chose to sing “Baby What Do You Want Me To Do.” I think she’s got good soul singing this song tonight. She’s giving good attitude, but could’ve stood to give us even more attitude. It was a good performance though. Randy said that Katie was sassy & had nice vocals. Ellen says it was a very horny song…because it had a lot of horns in it, lol! She thought Katie’s performance was great! Kara says that Katie showed the judges that they were wrong about her & that she did a good job. Simon found her performance loud & a bit annoying. He also didn’t like the song choice.

Casey James: You either like Casey, or you don’t. I’m one of his fans. I think he’s talented and good looking. He chose to sing one of Elvis’ more abstract songs called “Lawty Miss Clawty.” Adam thinks that Casey should work on the arrangement to make it a little more interesting. Since this is Elvis Week, Casey’s style as far as his clothes & hair should have been a little more flashy. That said, he sounded it really good singing it. He didn’t blow me away, but he sounded good. Randy said that he didn’t see anything different, but that it was another solid performance. Ellen loves Casey’s voice. She said it wasn’t as exciting as she would have liked to have seen, but that he’s always good. Kara says that she knows Casey is capable of brilliance, but that tonight’s performance fell short for her. Simon called Casey’s performance a wasted opportunity with a song that was completely forgettable. But he said his vocals were good

None of the performances stood out as my favorites tonight. I don’t think that anyone did anything that was mind blowing. I also don’t think that anyone did anything that was horrible. That said, as talented as she is…Siobhan had the worst performance for me. Adam Lambert returns to perform during the Results Show Wednesday and 2 contestants will be voted off.

American Idol Shocker For Everyone Else…Not A Shocker For Me!

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Before the results were fully revealed Jason Derulo, David Archuletta & Rihanna all performed on the American Idol stage Wednesday night…

When all was said and done, the Idol contestant with the lowest amount of votes was…

Michael Lynche. There was buzz all over the TV & internet Wednesday night how much of a shocker it was that Big Mike was on the verge of being kicked off the show. I can understand everyone’s position…Big Mike is one of the most talented contestants on the show this season. He had a good performance Tuesday, so he should not have made it to the bottom. But the fact that Big Mike received the least number of votes wasn’t a shocker to me at all. He’s the only contestant left on the show who has an R&B appeal and R&B contestants haven’t been the most popular on the show this season. Todrick Hall & Jermaine Sellers were eliminated pretty early on from the Top 24. That’s one reason. Another is that although he’s so extremely talented & charismatic, his performance wasn’t mind-blowing this week. With those reasons combined, I wasn’t surprised that he ended up singing for his life at the end of the Results Show. And the judges obviously like Mike & think that he has a true chance to make it far in the competition, so they finally used their Judges’ Save on him! That means that although he received the fewest number of votes this week, the judges have saved him from elimination. With that said, there are still officially 9 contestants and two of them will be eliminated next week!

Btw, there’s also lots of buzz about Adam Lambert mentoring the Idol contestants next week, just in time to promote his new Remixes EP. Adam was a performer before he was ever on American Idol. Some feel that this & his experience as an Idol contestant qualifies him to mentor the Idols. But Adam was last season’s Idol runner up, so I wondered if his mentoring the contestants is a slap in the face to Kris Allen, the actual winner of Idol last season…Hmm. In either case, he’s mentoring the kids next Tuesday & performing during the results show Wednesday!

The Idols Sing Songs From The Lennon/McCartney Songbook!

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Less Didi Benami, the Idol Season 9 Top 9 perform songs from the Lennon/McCartney Songbook tonight. I thought it was a nice touch for Paul McCartney to tape a good luck to the contestants for us to watch.

Aaron Kelly: I also liked that Idol Producers had the contestants give their opinions of each contestant behind the scenes. For example, they said that they all call Aaron “Yoda” behind the scenes! “The Long & Winding Road” was the Lennon/McCartney song Aaron chose to sing tonight. I think everyone pretty much agrees that Aaron has a nice voice & that he’s an adorable kid. He sounds nice singing this song. But at this point in the competition, I’m starting to get bored with the contestants who don’t stand out as being unique. Aaron’s the same every week and I’m kinda bored. If he were the same & exciting every week, it would be a different story. But he’s just the same & pretty okay. He wasn’t bad tonight, but his performance won’t be memorable for me. Randy likes that Aaron has a great voice & beautiful tone. But he didn’t like that the song was sleepy & needed a twist. Ellen thinks Aaron’s fantastic, but thought the performance felt long & winding. Kara feels that Aaron hasn’t reached the level of great yet & that every week, it’s feeling like the same performance. Simon felt the performance was very old fashioned & boring. He suggests that Aaron try to sound young & relevant. He also feels that he should takes risks so that he can have “a moment.”

Katie Stevens: Katie’s fellow contestants say that she’s fun, energetic, happy, unpredictable & is like everyone’s little sister. She chose to sing “Let It Be” tonight. Katie’s voice is really good for this song…or the song is really good for Katie’s voice, lol. Anyway, she sounds good singing it. I like that she started off tenderly, then raised the emotions of the song as it progressed. I think that she also did a good job connecting with the meaning of the song & conveying that feeling to us. Randy said it was her best performance ever. I have to agree with him. Randy thought the vocals were hot. Ellen thought she perfectly changed the song just enough to make it hers without changing the song too much. She also said that there’s no way Katie’s making it into the Bottom 3 this week with that performance. Kara thought that Katie made the song her own, she blossomed onstage, she had a great vocal & was confident. She said she never looked or sounded better & that she’s so proud of her. Simon says that Katie got it right tonight. He said that the performance worked tonight because it felt that she was singing the song to somebody rather than being robotic.

Andrew Garcia: According to the contestants, Andrew is funny & goofy! Lee calls him his best friend on the show. Michael calls him his partner in crime. Tonight, he chose to sing “Can’t Buy Me Love.” Andrew’s always most comfortable with his guitar, so he appears to be very comfortable & confident singing this one tonight. And it’s a fun performance of the song, even though he just stood in one place while singing it. It was a playful rendition of the song. I liked it. He sounded decent singing it, but his vocals didn’t blow me away. It was a cool performance, but not the best. Randy said he sounded good performing it, that it was a solid arrangement, but that the performance was a little corny at times. Ellen felt it was the perfect song choice for Andrew, it was a lot of fun & she loved it. Kara wanted to love it, but felt that she didn’t see anything new from him this week. She felt he could have done more with the interpretation. Simon thought the performance & arrangement were corny, irrelevant & old fashioned. It felt Andrew & the band got it wrong tonight.

Michael Lynche: His fellow Idol contestants say Big Mike is hilarious & a big teddy bear. Casey also says that Mike snores really loud, lol! He sang “Eleanor Rigby” tonight. I love the violinists & cellists accompanying Mike onstage tonight. He sounds good singing this. The performance didn’t blow me away, but he definitely brought a lot of soul to the song. Randy loves the fact that Mike is letting the artist in him blossom. He said he didn’t like everything about the performance, but really loved most parts. Ellen says there’s so many different sides of Michael that he can do anything songwise. She thought it was a huge risk for him to take on this song & change it so drastically, but she thought it was incredible & she loved it. Kara thought the vocals were amazing & thought that he brought drama to the story of the song. She agrees with Randy that Mike made this song commercial & relevant for today’s audience. Simon didn’t love it as much as the other judges because he felt it was the sort of performance that you see in musicals. And he disagrees with Kara & Randy that the performance made Mike contemporary & current.

Crystal Bowersox: Crystal has a little bit of a cold tonight. She says it’s been going around the Idol camp. Let’s hope it doesn’t ruin her vocals tonight. The other contestants describe Crystal as Mama Sox! They say she’s funny, goofy, & a beautiful mother. They say she’s real, genuinely cares about others’ well being & tells it like it is. She chose to sing “Come Together” tonight. Crystal’s always reminded me of Melissa Etheridge, but tonight she sounds more like her than ever before singing this one. The performance is true to Crystal’s style, but it wasn’t as impressive or stand out as much as some performances she’s done in the past. It was good, but not mind blowing. Randy thought it was another solid performance. He doesn’t think it was her best, but it was solid. He feels she’s in the zone right now. Ellen says that she needs to find a new way to tell Crystal how great she is. She loved the performance & thought that Crystal’s version made her forget that it was a Lennon/McCartney song. Kara says it was one of her favorite performances of Crystal’s. She thought it had a Bonnie Raitt feel to it. She thought it was sexy, slinky & playful. Simon thought it was a performance he could hear on the radio. He thought that her it was an even better performance than last week’s.

Tim Urban: The Idol contestants say that Tim is always smiling. That’s pretty much what they had to say about him…that he’s always happy & always smiling. Good for him. Tonight, he chose to sing “All My Lovin’.” There’s never gonna be a time that Tim’s vocals are so amazing that they’re the highlight of his performance. But it’s a catchy song & was a fun rendition. Randy thought it was a better performance than Tim’s had the last couple of weeks. He also pointed out that Tim has a Beatles-like hairstyle tonight. Ellen thought it was the perfect song choice for him & that it was Tim’s 2nd best performance ever. Kara commended Tim for taking some of the judges’ advice. Simon thought Tim did really well tonight with the song. He felt the song really suited his voice & that Tim takes the judges’ criticisms like a man.

Casey James: Michael Lynche calls Casey the handsome playboy. The contestants say they make fun of him because he looks like a soap opera star, lol. They all say they come up with soap opera star names for him like Trevor, Fabio & Drake, lol. They also say he has a big, boisterous laugh. The song he chose tonight was “Jealous Guy.” The performance was a little slow. I noticed because I’m already sleepy right now and listening to it made me nod off a little bit, lol. That said, he sang the song with feeling & meaning. I felt he could have chosen a better song though. Randy loved that he played the acoustic guitar & that Casey showed a sensitive side to himself. He said it wasn’t the perfect vocal, but that it was a very heartfelt performance. Ellen thought it was so soulful & was his best performance to date. Kara said that Casey showed a vulnerability tonight that has been lacking in some of his other performances. Simon thought it was the best performance of the night so far. He says that he was very, very impressed with Casey tonight.

Siobhan Magnus: Crystal Bowersox calls Siobhan amazing. Big Mike calls her amazingly weird. Casey says that she’s without a doubt, the most interesting person he’s ever met. Katie says she’s always true to who she is, never changes & has an incredible voice. She chose to sing “Across The Universe” tonight. The thing I like about Siobhan’s performance tonight is how gentle & tender she’s singing the song. I like that it’s just her pretty voice & a piano. She doesn’t have to scream to prove she can sing. It was a pretty performance vocally. Randy thought the performance was a little sleepy, but he loved seeing her tender side. He also loves her artistry. Ellen supports that Siobhan marches to the beat of her own drum. She loved that Siobhan took the judges’ advice & cooled it on the high notes & thought it was a beautiful performance. Kara thought that from a singing perspective, she showed control & hit the notes. However, she thought it was a very restrained & polite performance, which isn’t her normal style. But she also likes that she connected very personally to the song. Simon thought that her performance was much stronger than last week’s.

Lee Dewyze: The contestants call Lee the resident worry wart because he worries that he’ll be voted off every week, even if the judges praised his performance! They also picked on him for having such a close friendship with Andrew Garcia! Lee chose to sing “Hey Jude” tonight. I thought it was odd that he had a bagpipe player walk down the stage at the end of the performance, but I guess he wanted to be different. He sounded good singing the song & seemed like he had lots of fun having the audience sing along. Randy says it was another hot performance for Lee. Ellen liked the confidence that Lee showed tonight & loved the performance. Kara says there were some good moments & some off moments, but she says she can hear Lee on the radio. Simon said that Lee was doing great until the bagpipe player showed up on the stage.

Although she didn’t blow me away, my favorite performer of the night was Katie Stevens. There was no horrible performance, but I’d still like to see Tim go home & not stay because girls like the way he looks. My prediction for the Bottom 3 this week would be Tim Urban, Aaron Kelly & Andrew Garcia. We’ll find out how America voted on the Results Show tomorrow. Also on the show tomorrow, look for performances from Rihanna, Jason Derulo & David Archuleta.
