Crystal & Lee Battle It Out For The American Idol Title!

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

The 2-night American Idol Season 9 finale starts tonight. Crystal Bowersox & Lee DeWyze will sing 3 songs each tonight. The 1st will be the contestant’s favorite song of the season. The 2nd will be a song chosen by Idol Executive Producer Simon Fuller. And the 3rd will be the song they’ll release if they win. As the judges are shown on screen, I have to say that I’m pretty sad to see Simon Cowell go. Much has been made about the fact that viewership is down on the show this year. But the fact still remains, it’s consistently at the top of the ratings and never at the bottom. It’ll be interesting to see how Simon’s new “X-Factor” show performs up against Idol. Simon fans are already proclaiming that like Simon, they won’t be returning to Idol next season. Me? I’ll give it a chance. I’ll also be watching “X-Factor.” Alright…after winning a coin toss last week, Crystal has decided to perform 2nd. So up 1st, it’s…

Round 1: Contestant’s Choice

Lee DeWyze: For his favorite song of the season, Lee chose to sing the song “The Boxer.” I vaguely remember Lee performing this one during Inspirational Week. He sounds pretty okay singing it tonight. The performance wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t mind-blowing or even worthy of finale week. Randy said it was a great way to start it off, but that he wasn’t sure it was energetic or exciting enough. Ellen says he performed it better than he did the 1st time. Kara says it was a meaningful song & that he was believable performing it, but she also agrees with Randy that he needs to bring up his energy. Simon said that he would expect a lot more passion & excitement on such an important night. He says that it was like a kiss on the cheek when he wants a kiss on the lips!

Crystal Bowersox: Crystal chose her song from Billboard #1’s Week, “Me & Bobby McGee.” Crystal sounds great, as usual. She also had a little more energy than Lee & I like how she made the audience a part of her performance. In my opinion, she’s winner of Round 1 tonight! Randy agrees with me! He thought it was dope! Ellen said that Crystal is so compelling onstage & that she and her guitar fill up the room. She thought the performance was stunning. Kara loved it when Crystal 1st did it & she loved it tonight. She said that Crystal told us so much about herself as an artist tonight & she has fire in her belly. Simon said that the performance brought him back to the time when he absolutely fell in love with Crystal. He said that this was Crystal back on her best & that we’ve got a competition tonight!

Round 2: Simon Fuller’s Choice

Lee DeWyze: “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M. My 1st thought was that this was the perfect song for Lee. As much as I love acoustic guitars and all, I have to say that this show is really kind of boring tonight since Lee and Crystal are both playing acoustically & singing low key songs…so far. I agree with Randy, this show needs some energy or I’m gonna fall asleep! Again, I thought that Lee sounded good. He had a choir behind him again. My opinion on that is that choirs make anybody sound good. This competition should be judged on the contestant’s performance, not on the added benefit of the choir. Randy said that it started off a little pitchy, but that it was a lot better than the 1st one. Ellen said that a couple of times Lee got really into it & got everyone excited, but then he pulled back again. Kara says that what makes Lee great (not being a hater, but “great” must be relative) as a performer is that he’s emotionally accessible. She said it wasn’t a perfect vocal, but she loved his emotional accessibility. Simon thought it was a brilliant choice of song for Lee, but that he went off note a few times. He says that Lee is nervous & warned him to understand the importance of the night and come back to perform perfectly for his final song.

Crystal Bowersox: “Black Velvet.” I immediately like that she’s not playing a guitar. Her singing is really nice & gutsy on this song. She sounds great. She hit some great notes, but I wish she would have worked the stage just a little bit more. Randy said that this is what he fell in love with from day 1 and that Mama Sox is in it to win it! Since Crystal changed into a slinky black dress for this number, Ellen joked that the wardrobe changes made it feel like it was a Cher concert! Lol. She said the performance was fantastic. Kara said that tonight is the night to give it all and that’s what Crystal is doing. Simon said that he had a little bit of a problem because he’s almost allergic to that song from hearing it so much in auditions. I have to agree with him. As soon as I heard she was singing it, I was like, ‘This song again?!’ But she pulled it off! Simon says that Crystal took that song & absolutely nailed it! He said he was impressed. Round 2 goes to Crystal as well!

Round 3: The Song That’ll Be Released If They Win

Lee DeWyze: “Beautiful Day.” Wow, he’ll release a cover of U2’s song if he’s the Idol winner. I like that he’s not playing the guitar this time. Watching Lee perform this one, I can’t help but think of Bono & U2. Bono is such a unique performer. Lee, however, is just letting his nerves get the best of him tonight & just didn’t capture the magic of this song the way Bono does. He sounds decent, but there’s nothing exciting about hearing him or seeing him. I’m team Crystal all the way, but I didn’t want to see Lee come all this way just to choke like he did tonight. He had so much momentum coming into the week, but he disappointed. Sad. Randy said that the performance started off a little awkward, but that he was strong towards the end. Ellen said he did a great job. Kara said he got swallowed up a bit in the song. She said he had some good moments & some not so good moments. Simon said Lee made the most of it. Simon also pointed out that this is his final time ever judging on American Idol, so he wanted to say that this competition was designed for someone like Lee who’s worked hard and he wishes the best for him. But you notice that Simon didn’t actually say how he felt about Lee’s performance. That’s because Simon wants Lee to win & has already gone on the record as saying that Lee would win the competition. So for him to actually say that Lee sucked, wouldn’t go along with what he’s been saying for the last week or so.

Crystal Bowersox: “Up To The Mountain.” She returned to the stool with her acoustic guitar for this one. Although it’s another low key song, Crystal sounds soulful & stirring singing it. She was really feeling the song in her soul & it came across in her voice. I could see that she was close to tears at the end of the performance. She also had a choir, but they weren’t as noticeable because Crystal’s voice was so powerful. Randy said it was an amazing song by an amazing singer. He said he was proud of her because it was one of her best performances at the perfect time. He said it was incredible! Ellen said that she can’t compare Crystal to one contemporary artist out right now & that she’s in a league of her own. I guess so if you discount Melissa Etheridge, who has a new album out right now, btw. Ellen went on to say that Crystal has a beautiful voice. Kara said that this was a very important song for Crystal tonight. She said that if she had one critique of Crystal, it’s that at times her walls have been up. But she said that tonight, Crystal’s walls were down. She said that Crystal completely & emotionally invested in that song unlike any other night and for her, she really blossomed with that song. She said it was amazing. Crystal wished Simon luck on his future endeavors since this would be his final critique as judge on the show. Then Simon said that Crystal’s performance was by far her best performance & the best performance of the entire night. And to quote him verbatim, ‘Since this is going to be the final critique I’m ever gonna give, I would just like to say that was outstanding!’

And with that, the Simon Cowell era on American Idol is just about over. Can’t wait to see the big sendoff for him on the Results Show tomorrow. I was already pulling for Crystal to be the next American Idol and she clearly outperformed Lee DeWyze tonight in every round! She has been THE most consistently good contestant all season. If she doesn’t win the American Idol title tomorrow, it’s not because she doesn’t deserve it. There was no contest tonight…Crystal Bowersox was the better contestant & she’s so getting my vote!

The American Idol Season 9 Battle Is Set! Here’s Who Was Voted Off!

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

I can’t believe we only have one more week of American Idol this season! It seems like just a couple of weeks ago that I started blogging about it. Boy, time flies. Tonight’s Results Show is huge since we find out which contestant goes home and which 2 contestants will battle it out in the Season 9 finale!

The night kicked with Ryan talking to the Top 3 onstage, followed by footage of Casey James’ Texas homecoming. It was moving to see him visit the hospital, doctor & nurses that he says saved his life when he was in an accident a few years ago. Ryan then talked to Perez Hilton in the audience about Travis Garland, who Perez described as better than Justin Timberlake. Travis Garland performed his song “Believe”. He did a good job, but I didn’t get a “better than Justin Timberlake” vibe from him.

After another break, Ryan reveals that Season 10 auditions will be held this summer in Nashville, New Orleans, Jersey City & San Francisco. Afterwards, we saw footage from Crystal Bowersox’s Ohio homecoming. Amid screams of “Mama Sox” & “Bowersox Rox”, Crystal performed at Bowerstock! Lol, lots of plays on her name…cute. Immediately afterwards, we went home to Chicago with Lee DeWyze. It was very cute to see him visit his elementary school, the paint store he used to work at & throw out the 1st pitch at a Chicago Cubs game.

Justin Bieber performed his songs “U Smile” & “Baby”. After a break, we got to the whole purpose of the Results Show…

After over 47 million votes, Lee DeWyze & Crystal Bowersox are in the Season finale! No surprise that Casey James was sent home tonight. And how cute was it when Casey picked up the little girl and sang “Daughters” to her during his final performance?!

So next week Crystal & Lee battle it out for the American Idol title! Before that though…

The American Idol Top 3 Compete For A Spot In The Finale!

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

I think going into tonight, most people feel that Crystal Bowersox & Lee DeWyze will be in the Top 2 next week & that Casey James will be voted off during tomorrow’s Results Show. But let’s not write him off just yet until we see his performances tonight. The Top 3 will each perform 2 songs—one of their choice & the other chosen by the judges. First up…

Round 1: Contestants’ Choice

Casey James: His personal song choice was “Okay, It’s Alright With Me” by Eric Hutchinson. He said he chose the song because he loves it & when he heard it, he thought that it was a song he could have written. I have to agree with Casey, hearing him singing it sounds second nature. It’s a great song for his style & voice, but I’m not sure that his performance of it was enough for the judges on such an integral point in the competition. It didn’t blow me a way and we need to be blown away at this late stage in the game. Randy said that the lyrics were true because the song was just alright for him. He felt the song was too safe when the show’s down to the wire. Ellen agrees with Randy & said that she wished that Casey would have brought it because this was the night he needed to. Kara says that it’s hard to pick a song that not everybody knows, especially on a night where he has to be fighting for the competition. She thought that the song choice didn’t work in his favor. Simon said that it’s arguably the most important night of Casey’s life, but that he chose a song that will have no lasting effect on the audience. He warned that Casey’s lucky he has another song on the way to redeem himself. On the bright side, Simon told Casey that he sounded good, but that the song choice was a dud.

Crystal Bowersox: Her personal song choice was “Come To My Window” by Melissa Etheridge. This is a no brainer for Crystal! Since she 1st stepped onto the Idol stage this season, we’ve been comparing her to Melissa Etheridge, so it was a smart song choice for her. Btw, I’ve always LOVED this song! And I love that she performed it tonight by playing the guitar AND the harmonica! Amazingly, she still managed to make the song hers. Randy didn’t like the arrangement, but felt Crystal’s vocals made up for it & that it was a good song choice for her. Ellen thought that Melissa Etheridge would be very proud of Crystal’s performance. Kara felt that Crystal got a little lost in the arrangement, but that it was still a good vocal. She also says that Crystal’s capable of a big moment tonight & she hopes that she has one. Simon agreed with the other judges, but says that he likes that Crystal hasn’t compromised herself as an artist this season. He said it was a very honest performance & congratulated her for making the right song choice.

Lee DeWyze: His personal song choice was “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. He sounds really good singing this. And he looks far more comfortable onstage than he’s ever looked in the competition so far. I don’t think it was a phenomenal performance, but it was certainly the best of the night so far. He wasn’t fighting the music like Crystal had to and he wasn’t just okay like Casey was. He was a bit better than both of them…Although I’m still pulling for Crystal to win the competition, lol! Randy thought Lee made a brilliant song choice and that he sounded amazing singing it. Ellen said that she’s proud Lee’s come out of his shyness. Kara thought that Lee showed everything he had and said that Round 1 goes to Lee. I have to agree. Simon thought that the Crystal & Casey song choices were okay, but that Lee’s was absolutely on the money & brilliant. He went on to say that not only did Lee win Round 1, but that he crushed the competition.

Round 2: Judges’ Choice

Casey James: After showing footage of Casey’s Texas homecoming, it was revealed that Randy & Kara chose “Daughters” by John Mayer for Casey.

Randy thought that this song was a great direction for Casey. Kara says that Casey needs to show that vulnerable side to stay in the competition. She says that an artist has to know their audience & Casey’s audience is women & girls, which is why this song is perfect for him. I’ve been a fan of Casey’s since the beginning of the season. I think that he’s got a great voice and that he’s adorable, but I don’t think he was as vulnerable singing this song as he could have been. As much of a jerk that John Mayer can be, he moves me when he sings this song. Casey sounded great, but I wasn’t as moved. Randy felt that the song fit Casey like a glove. Ellen thought the song was beautiful for Casey. Kara said that the song showed the more artistic side of Casey & that he did a good job. Simon thought it was a much better song choice than the first one, but that the arrangement of the song was poor. He said he sounded very good, but that the song didn’t have the wow factor. He argued that Randy & Kara didn’t work with Casey enough to give the song more of a climax, but Randy & Kara defended themselves by saying the song isn’t meant to have a climax.

Crystal Bowersox: After seeing footage of Crystal’s homecoming in Ohio, we found out that Ellen chose for Crystal to sing Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed.” Ellen thought that this song choice would show Crystal’s range.

Crystal performed this one guitarless. It was kind of odd to hear her singing that she was a man since she didn’t change Paul McCartney’s lyrics, but I got over it. I expected her to sing the song a little more tenderly, but she ended up belting out many of her lines like Janis Joplin. She sounded good, but I’ve heard Crystal sound better. But I do give her tons of credit for not holding back…she sang with all her heart! Randy thought it was a great song, great vocals & that Crystal showed she is in it to win it! Ellen said she couldn’t have asked for more. She said Crystal did what she was hoping she would do when she chose the song for her. Kara said that Crystal didn’t change the song up that much, but what she did with it was showed parts of her voice that we haven’t heard. She said that she did a lot of risky things like performing with no guitar & singing different notes and it paid off. Simon was surprised with the song choice, but that Crystal proved that she’s got soul when she sang it. He said she worked outside of her comfort zone and that she may be thanking Ellen for putting her into the finals next week.

Lee DeWyze: After showing footage from Lee’s homecoming in Chicago, it was revealed that Simon chose “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen. I can’t remember who sang this song at the beginning of this season, but I remember them singing it beautifully.

Lee sounds great, but is it fair that he’s got a whole choir & what sounds like an orchestra backing him up? It just sounds like he had a little more help than the other 2 contestants, lol. I think it was a moving performance, but the thing that made it more moving for me was the choir & the musicians in the background. Randy says that it was unbelievable. Ellen says it was stunning. Kara said that Lee is what the show is all about. She said he was the heart of the show this season & that he owned the entire night. Simon says that Lee proved he is a fantastic performer & a great person & he hopes that he makes it into the Top 2.

From listening to the judges, it sounds like they have already given the American Idol title to Lee. And I am fine with them being fans of contestants, but judges do sway votes and they need to be more cognizant of that when making their comments at this pivotal point in the competition. That said, I do think that Lee had a better night than the other 2 contestants. But they may have sounded “epic” too if they had a choir & orchestra behind them. Tomorrow, we find out which one of the 3 will be going home. Justin Bieber & Travis Garland will also perform!

Crystal, Casey & Lee: American Idol’s Top 3 Have Their Homecomings This Weekend!

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

With Big Mike gone, we have a new Top 3

Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox & Casey James. If the Idols thought they were busy before, wait til this weekend! They make their homecomings with tons of appearances over the weekend. Keep scrolling down for some of their hometown schedules that I was able to piece together since there were no official announcements by the American Idol producers. I’ll also include words straight from the mouths of Crystal, Casey & Lee…

Crystal Bowersox – “I come from a small town where everyone knows everyone – it’s a really tight-knit community. Everyone’s incredibly excited for me, and I couldn’t be more excited for them. I’ve heard that things were looking pretty dismal back home, and now everyone is rallying because they have something to believe in. It’s amazing that it can be me who lifts the spirits of the people in my hometown. I’m forever grateful for their support and love, and I can’t wait to come home and see everybody.”

Crystal has returned to her native Ohio to perform a concert Friday afternoon at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds in Oak Harbor, which will kick off at four in the afternoon local time. Before that she’ll be making an in store appearance at a local AT&T Store in Toledo at ten in the morning. Here’s more of her homecoming schedule:

The parade in Toledo.

12:30 p.m.

6:45 p.m.
After her performance in Ottawa County, she will be back in the Glass City to conclude her hometown visit to sing the National Anthem at the Mud Hens game.

Casey James – “To all my hometown people – thank you. I know they’re rooting for me like crazy and voting their butts off, so I owe them a huge thank you. I’ll never be able to show it enough. Even saying thank you a million times wouldn’t be enough. I am excited to go home and see my fans, and I am excited to smell that Texas air again. It sounds stupid, but that’s going be one of the best things for me.” Here’s some of Casey’s homecoming schedule:

Cool, Texas, is preparing for Casey James to breeze on through Saturday. With a packed schedule, the American Idol finalist can only spend an hour in his hometown this weekend.

At 10 a.m. James will receive the Key to Cool from Mayor Dorothy Hall at the Cool Community Center.

Following the presentation, James will head to Bulldog Stadium where the City of Millsap will make a presentation followed by a short performance.

Due to the limited time, no parade will be held.

James is making stops in Fort Worth Friday. First at the AT&T Store at 1219 W State Highway 114 in Grapevine at 10:30 a.m. followed by a 4 p.m. concert at the Fort Worth Stock Yards.

Lee DeWyze – “I’m very appreciative of this whole experience. Truthfully, there’s more than just getting up there and performing every week. It’s the people back at home – and the people everywhere – who are voting for me and supporting me. Without them, I wouldn’t be here. Going back home and getting to see all the people that will be there is going to be really awesome.”
Here’s some of Lee’s Chicago hometown schedule:

After all the hometown love, the Top 3 finalists will compete head-to-head on the second-to-last performance show of the season, airing Tuesday, May 18th, on FOX. Each contestant will sing two songs – Judges’ Choice and Finalist’s Choice – as they vie for a coveted spot in the finale.

Tune in the following night, Wednesday, May 19th, to find out which two finalists will face off in the final showdown at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE. During the live results show, Travis Garland will take the stage, and pop sensation Justin Bieber will perform his hits “Baby” and “U Smile.”

Another Idol Voted Off As The Season 9 Top 3 Is Revealed!

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Since there were 3 performers scheduled, they got right into it with R&B superstar & former American Idol winner Fantasia kicking off the show with a performance of “Bittersweet.”

Loved her hair tonight…gorgeousness! And another thing I always love about Fantasia is that she sings her heart out every time she’s onstage…she does not hold back. Her voice was so beautiful and soulful tonight that I had to rewind & watch the performance again. Nice to see her :-)

After showing footage of past Idol contestants’ visits back to their hometowns for their parades, Ryan reveals that Casey James is safe & in the Top 3! After that, the thought that immediately pops into my head is that Big Mike is going home…unless there’s a major shocker & Lee or Crystal didn’t get enough votes. We’ll see as the hour unfolds. In either case, this means that my prediction last night that Big Mike & Casey would be the Bottom 2 was totally incorrect, lol.

After the break, former Idol contestant Chris Daughtry returned to the Idol stage with his band to perform “September.” I’ve always been a big Chris Daughtry fan. As a matter of fact, I thought he should’ve won his season. Turns out it didn’t matter because he’s had amazing success without the title. For a while during his 1st album, he had taken to wearing guy liner. I’m glad he’s stopped that because he’s really cute without it. And he sounded lovely tonight.

After another break, more results. Lee DeWyze is safe and in the Top 3! I have to say that I like Lee, but I’m not blown away by him like the judges and many viewers. He’s good though, but not my fav.

After another break Bon Jovi performs! For some reason, I thought that Bon Jovi looked strangely out of place on the Idol stage tonight. Not sure why I felt like that because I like them a lot. It was just odd looking to me. They’re so legendary that it seems they wouldn’t need an American Idol to promote their stuff. As they went to break, they showed a shot of Big Mike & Crystal and you just had the feeling that Mike’s gotta already know that he’s going home.

After the break, Ryan reveals what we already knew was coming, Crystal Bowersox is safe & is in the Top 3!

So Michael Lynche’s dream of being in the Top 3 did not come true…Voted off for the 2nd time, but this time there’s no Judges’ Save. He’s going home :-(

But it was sweet to see him hugging & saying bye to all the judges. I’d love to know what Simon Cowell was saying to him during their long conversation after the performance. And how cute was it to see Big Mike holding his daughter & giving her smooches on the cheek at the end of the show?!

So there you have it, the American Idol Season 9 Top 3 is solidified. Crystal Bowersox, Lee DeWyze & Casey James will be heading back to their hometowns this weekend for their parades. Then it’s back to Hollywood to compete next week:

On Tuesday, the Top 3 finalists will compete head-to-head on the second-to-last performance show of the season. Each contestant will sing two songs – Judges’ Choice and Finalist’s Choice – as they vie for a coveted spot in the finale.

Tune in the Wednesday night to find out which two finalists will face off in the final showdown at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE. During the live results show, Travis Garland will take the stage, and pop sensation Justin Bieber will perform his hits “Baby” and “U Smile.”
