Crystal & Lee Battle It Out For The American Idol Title!

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

The 2-night American Idol Season 9 finale starts tonight. Crystal Bowersox & Lee DeWyze will sing 3 songs each tonight. The 1st will be the contestant’s favorite song of the season. The 2nd will be a song chosen by Idol Executive Producer Simon Fuller. And the 3rd will be the song they’ll release if they win. As the judges are shown on screen, I have to say that I’m pretty sad to see Simon Cowell go. Much has been made about the fact that viewership is down on the show this year. But the fact still remains, it’s consistently at the top of the ratings and never at the bottom. It’ll be interesting to see how Simon’s new “X-Factor” show performs up against Idol. Simon fans are already proclaiming that like Simon, they won’t be returning to Idol next season. Me? I’ll give it a chance. I’ll also be watching “X-Factor.” Alright…after winning a coin toss last week, Crystal has decided to perform 2nd. So up 1st, it’s…

Round 1: Contestant’s Choice

Lee DeWyze: For his favorite song of the season, Lee chose to sing the song “The Boxer.” I vaguely remember Lee performing this one during Inspirational Week. He sounds pretty okay singing it tonight. The performance wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t mind-blowing or even worthy of finale week. Randy said it was a great way to start it off, but that he wasn’t sure it was energetic or exciting enough. Ellen says he performed it better than he did the 1st time. Kara says it was a meaningful song & that he was believable performing it, but she also agrees with Randy that he needs to bring up his energy. Simon said that he would expect a lot more passion & excitement on such an important night. He says that it was like a kiss on the cheek when he wants a kiss on the lips!

Crystal Bowersox: Crystal chose her song from Billboard #1’s Week, “Me & Bobby McGee.” Crystal sounds great, as usual. She also had a little more energy than Lee & I like how she made the audience a part of her performance. In my opinion, she’s winner of Round 1 tonight! Randy agrees with me! He thought it was dope! Ellen said that Crystal is so compelling onstage & that she and her guitar fill up the room. She thought the performance was stunning. Kara loved it when Crystal 1st did it & she loved it tonight. She said that Crystal told us so much about herself as an artist tonight & she has fire in her belly. Simon said that the performance brought him back to the time when he absolutely fell in love with Crystal. He said that this was Crystal back on her best & that we’ve got a competition tonight!

Round 2: Simon Fuller’s Choice

Lee DeWyze: “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M. My 1st thought was that this was the perfect song for Lee. As much as I love acoustic guitars and all, I have to say that this show is really kind of boring tonight since Lee and Crystal are both playing acoustically & singing low key songs…so far. I agree with Randy, this show needs some energy or I’m gonna fall asleep! Again, I thought that Lee sounded good. He had a choir behind him again. My opinion on that is that choirs make anybody sound good. This competition should be judged on the contestant’s performance, not on the added benefit of the choir. Randy said that it started off a little pitchy, but that it was a lot better than the 1st one. Ellen said that a couple of times Lee got really into it & got everyone excited, but then he pulled back again. Kara says that what makes Lee great (not being a hater, but “great” must be relative) as a performer is that he’s emotionally accessible. She said it wasn’t a perfect vocal, but she loved his emotional accessibility. Simon thought it was a brilliant choice of song for Lee, but that he went off note a few times. He says that Lee is nervous & warned him to understand the importance of the night and come back to perform perfectly for his final song.

Crystal Bowersox: “Black Velvet.” I immediately like that she’s not playing a guitar. Her singing is really nice & gutsy on this song. She sounds great. She hit some great notes, but I wish she would have worked the stage just a little bit more. Randy said that this is what he fell in love with from day 1 and that Mama Sox is in it to win it! Since Crystal changed into a slinky black dress for this number, Ellen joked that the wardrobe changes made it feel like it was a Cher concert! Lol. She said the performance was fantastic. Kara said that tonight is the night to give it all and that’s what Crystal is doing. Simon said that he had a little bit of a problem because he’s almost allergic to that song from hearing it so much in auditions. I have to agree with him. As soon as I heard she was singing it, I was like, ‘This song again?!’ But she pulled it off! Simon says that Crystal took that song & absolutely nailed it! He said he was impressed. Round 2 goes to Crystal as well!

Round 3: The Song That’ll Be Released If They Win

Lee DeWyze: “Beautiful Day.” Wow, he’ll release a cover of U2’s song if he’s the Idol winner. I like that he’s not playing the guitar this time. Watching Lee perform this one, I can’t help but think of Bono & U2. Bono is such a unique performer. Lee, however, is just letting his nerves get the best of him tonight & just didn’t capture the magic of this song the way Bono does. He sounds decent, but there’s nothing exciting about hearing him or seeing him. I’m team Crystal all the way, but I didn’t want to see Lee come all this way just to choke like he did tonight. He had so much momentum coming into the week, but he disappointed. Sad. Randy said that the performance started off a little awkward, but that he was strong towards the end. Ellen said he did a great job. Kara said he got swallowed up a bit in the song. She said he had some good moments & some not so good moments. Simon said Lee made the most of it. Simon also pointed out that this is his final time ever judging on American Idol, so he wanted to say that this competition was designed for someone like Lee who’s worked hard and he wishes the best for him. But you notice that Simon didn’t actually say how he felt about Lee’s performance. That’s because Simon wants Lee to win & has already gone on the record as saying that Lee would win the competition. So for him to actually say that Lee sucked, wouldn’t go along with what he’s been saying for the last week or so.

Crystal Bowersox: “Up To The Mountain.” She returned to the stool with her acoustic guitar for this one. Although it’s another low key song, Crystal sounds soulful & stirring singing it. She was really feeling the song in her soul & it came across in her voice. I could see that she was close to tears at the end of the performance. She also had a choir, but they weren’t as noticeable because Crystal’s voice was so powerful. Randy said it was an amazing song by an amazing singer. He said he was proud of her because it was one of her best performances at the perfect time. He said it was incredible! Ellen said that she can’t compare Crystal to one contemporary artist out right now & that she’s in a league of her own. I guess so if you discount Melissa Etheridge, who has a new album out right now, btw. Ellen went on to say that Crystal has a beautiful voice. Kara said that this was a very important song for Crystal tonight. She said that if she had one critique of Crystal, it’s that at times her walls have been up. But she said that tonight, Crystal’s walls were down. She said that Crystal completely & emotionally invested in that song unlike any other night and for her, she really blossomed with that song. She said it was amazing. Crystal wished Simon luck on his future endeavors since this would be his final critique as judge on the show. Then Simon said that Crystal’s performance was by far her best performance & the best performance of the entire night. And to quote him verbatim, ‘Since this is going to be the final critique I’m ever gonna give, I would just like to say that was outstanding!’

And with that, the Simon Cowell era on American Idol is just about over. Can’t wait to see the big sendoff for him on the Results Show tomorrow. I was already pulling for Crystal to be the next American Idol and she clearly outperformed Lee DeWyze tonight in every round! She has been THE most consistently good contestant all season. If she doesn’t win the American Idol title tomorrow, it’s not because she doesn’t deserve it. There was no contest tonight…Crystal Bowersox was the better contestant & she’s so getting my vote!

The American Idol Season 9 Battle Is Set! Here’s Who Was Voted Off!

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

I can’t believe we only have one more week of American Idol this season! It seems like just a couple of weeks ago that I started blogging about it. Boy, time flies. Tonight’s Results Show is huge since we find out which contestant goes home and which 2 contestants will battle it out in the Season 9 finale!

The night kicked with Ryan talking to the Top 3 onstage, followed by footage of Casey James’ Texas homecoming. It was moving to see him visit the hospital, doctor & nurses that he says saved his life when he was in an accident a few years ago. Ryan then talked to Perez Hilton in the audience about Travis Garland, who Perez described as better than Justin Timberlake. Travis Garland performed his song “Believe”. He did a good job, but I didn’t get a “better than Justin Timberlake” vibe from him.

After another break, Ryan reveals that Season 10 auditions will be held this summer in Nashville, New Orleans, Jersey City & San Francisco. Afterwards, we saw footage from Crystal Bowersox’s Ohio homecoming. Amid screams of “Mama Sox” & “Bowersox Rox”, Crystal performed at Bowerstock! Lol, lots of plays on her name…cute. Immediately afterwards, we went home to Chicago with Lee DeWyze. It was very cute to see him visit his elementary school, the paint store he used to work at & throw out the 1st pitch at a Chicago Cubs game.

Justin Bieber performed his songs “U Smile” & “Baby”. After a break, we got to the whole purpose of the Results Show…

After over 47 million votes, Lee DeWyze & Crystal Bowersox are in the Season finale! No surprise that Casey James was sent home tonight. And how cute was it when Casey picked up the little girl and sang “Daughters” to her during his final performance?!

So next week Crystal & Lee battle it out for the American Idol title! Before that though…

The American Idol Top 3 Compete For A Spot In The Finale!

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

I think going into tonight, most people feel that Crystal Bowersox & Lee DeWyze will be in the Top 2 next week & that Casey James will be voted off during tomorrow’s Results Show. But let’s not write him off just yet until we see his performances tonight. The Top 3 will each perform 2 songs—one of their choice & the other chosen by the judges. First up…

Round 1: Contestants’ Choice

Casey James: His personal song choice was “Okay, It’s Alright With Me” by Eric Hutchinson. He said he chose the song because he loves it & when he heard it, he thought that it was a song he could have written. I have to agree with Casey, hearing him singing it sounds second nature. It’s a great song for his style & voice, but I’m not sure that his performance of it was enough for the judges on such an integral point in the competition. It didn’t blow me a way and we need to be blown away at this late stage in the game. Randy said that the lyrics were true because the song was just alright for him. He felt the song was too safe when the show’s down to the wire. Ellen agrees with Randy & said that she wished that Casey would have brought it because this was the night he needed to. Kara says that it’s hard to pick a song that not everybody knows, especially on a night where he has to be fighting for the competition. She thought that the song choice didn’t work in his favor. Simon said that it’s arguably the most important night of Casey’s life, but that he chose a song that will have no lasting effect on the audience. He warned that Casey’s lucky he has another song on the way to redeem himself. On the bright side, Simon told Casey that he sounded good, but that the song choice was a dud.

Crystal Bowersox: Her personal song choice was “Come To My Window” by Melissa Etheridge. This is a no brainer for Crystal! Since she 1st stepped onto the Idol stage this season, we’ve been comparing her to Melissa Etheridge, so it was a smart song choice for her. Btw, I’ve always LOVED this song! And I love that she performed it tonight by playing the guitar AND the harmonica! Amazingly, she still managed to make the song hers. Randy didn’t like the arrangement, but felt Crystal’s vocals made up for it & that it was a good song choice for her. Ellen thought that Melissa Etheridge would be very proud of Crystal’s performance. Kara felt that Crystal got a little lost in the arrangement, but that it was still a good vocal. She also says that Crystal’s capable of a big moment tonight & she hopes that she has one. Simon agreed with the other judges, but says that he likes that Crystal hasn’t compromised herself as an artist this season. He said it was a very honest performance & congratulated her for making the right song choice.

Lee DeWyze: His personal song choice was “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. He sounds really good singing this. And he looks far more comfortable onstage than he’s ever looked in the competition so far. I don’t think it was a phenomenal performance, but it was certainly the best of the night so far. He wasn’t fighting the music like Crystal had to and he wasn’t just okay like Casey was. He was a bit better than both of them…Although I’m still pulling for Crystal to win the competition, lol! Randy thought Lee made a brilliant song choice and that he sounded amazing singing it. Ellen said that she’s proud Lee’s come out of his shyness. Kara thought that Lee showed everything he had and said that Round 1 goes to Lee. I have to agree. Simon thought that the Crystal & Casey song choices were okay, but that Lee’s was absolutely on the money & brilliant. He went on to say that not only did Lee win Round 1, but that he crushed the competition.

Round 2: Judges’ Choice

Casey James: After showing footage of Casey’s Texas homecoming, it was revealed that Randy & Kara chose “Daughters” by John Mayer for Casey.

Randy thought that this song was a great direction for Casey. Kara says that Casey needs to show that vulnerable side to stay in the competition. She says that an artist has to know their audience & Casey’s audience is women & girls, which is why this song is perfect for him. I’ve been a fan of Casey’s since the beginning of the season. I think that he’s got a great voice and that he’s adorable, but I don’t think he was as vulnerable singing this song as he could have been. As much of a jerk that John Mayer can be, he moves me when he sings this song. Casey sounded great, but I wasn’t as moved. Randy felt that the song fit Casey like a glove. Ellen thought the song was beautiful for Casey. Kara said that the song showed the more artistic side of Casey & that he did a good job. Simon thought it was a much better song choice than the first one, but that the arrangement of the song was poor. He said he sounded very good, but that the song didn’t have the wow factor. He argued that Randy & Kara didn’t work with Casey enough to give the song more of a climax, but Randy & Kara defended themselves by saying the song isn’t meant to have a climax.

Crystal Bowersox: After seeing footage of Crystal’s homecoming in Ohio, we found out that Ellen chose for Crystal to sing Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed.” Ellen thought that this song choice would show Crystal’s range.

Crystal performed this one guitarless. It was kind of odd to hear her singing that she was a man since she didn’t change Paul McCartney’s lyrics, but I got over it. I expected her to sing the song a little more tenderly, but she ended up belting out many of her lines like Janis Joplin. She sounded good, but I’ve heard Crystal sound better. But I do give her tons of credit for not holding back…she sang with all her heart! Randy thought it was a great song, great vocals & that Crystal showed she is in it to win it! Ellen said she couldn’t have asked for more. She said Crystal did what she was hoping she would do when she chose the song for her. Kara said that Crystal didn’t change the song up that much, but what she did with it was showed parts of her voice that we haven’t heard. She said that she did a lot of risky things like performing with no guitar & singing different notes and it paid off. Simon was surprised with the song choice, but that Crystal proved that she’s got soul when she sang it. He said she worked outside of her comfort zone and that she may be thanking Ellen for putting her into the finals next week.

Lee DeWyze: After showing footage from Lee’s homecoming in Chicago, it was revealed that Simon chose “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen. I can’t remember who sang this song at the beginning of this season, but I remember them singing it beautifully.

Lee sounds great, but is it fair that he’s got a whole choir & what sounds like an orchestra backing him up? It just sounds like he had a little more help than the other 2 contestants, lol. I think it was a moving performance, but the thing that made it more moving for me was the choir & the musicians in the background. Randy says that it was unbelievable. Ellen says it was stunning. Kara said that Lee is what the show is all about. She said he was the heart of the show this season & that he owned the entire night. Simon says that Lee proved he is a fantastic performer & a great person & he hopes that he makes it into the Top 2.

From listening to the judges, it sounds like they have already given the American Idol title to Lee. And I am fine with them being fans of contestants, but judges do sway votes and they need to be more cognizant of that when making their comments at this pivotal point in the competition. That said, I do think that Lee had a better night than the other 2 contestants. But they may have sounded “epic” too if they had a choir & orchestra behind them. Tomorrow, we find out which one of the 3 will be going home. Justin Bieber & Travis Garland will also perform!

Crystal, Casey & Lee: American Idol’s Top 3 Have Their Homecomings This Weekend!

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

With Big Mike gone, we have a new Top 3

Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox & Casey James. If the Idols thought they were busy before, wait til this weekend! They make their homecomings with tons of appearances over the weekend. Keep scrolling down for some of their hometown schedules that I was able to piece together since there were no official announcements by the American Idol producers. I’ll also include words straight from the mouths of Crystal, Casey & Lee…

Crystal Bowersox – “I come from a small town where everyone knows everyone – it’s a really tight-knit community. Everyone’s incredibly excited for me, and I couldn’t be more excited for them. I’ve heard that things were looking pretty dismal back home, and now everyone is rallying because they have something to believe in. It’s amazing that it can be me who lifts the spirits of the people in my hometown. I’m forever grateful for their support and love, and I can’t wait to come home and see everybody.”

Crystal has returned to her native Ohio to perform a concert Friday afternoon at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds in Oak Harbor, which will kick off at four in the afternoon local time. Before that she’ll be making an in store appearance at a local AT&T Store in Toledo at ten in the morning. Here’s more of her homecoming schedule:

The parade in Toledo.

6:45 p.m.
After her performance in Ottawa County, she will be back in the Glass City to conclude her hometown visit to sing the National Anthem at the Mud Hens game.

Casey James – “To all my hometown people – thank you. I know they’re rooting for me like crazy and voting their butts off, so I owe them a huge thank you. I’ll never be able to show it enough. Even saying thank you a million times wouldn’t be enough. I am excited to go home and see my fans, and I am excited to smell that Texas air again. It sounds stupid, but that’s going be one of the best things for me.” Here’s some of Casey’s homecoming schedule:

Cool, Texas, is preparing for Casey James to breeze on through Saturday. With a packed schedule, the American Idol finalist can only spend an hour in his hometown this weekend.

At 10 a.m. James will receive the Key to Cool from Mayor Dorothy Hall at the Cool Community Center.

Following the presentation, James will head to Bulldog Stadium where the City of Millsap will make a presentation followed by a short performance.

Due to the limited time, no parade will be held.

James is making stops in Fort Worth Friday. First at the AT&T Store at 1219 W State Highway 114 in Grapevine at 10:30 a.m. followed by a 4 p.m. concert at the Fort Worth Stock Yards.

Lee DeWyze – “I’m very appreciative of this whole experience. Truthfully, there’s more than just getting up there and performing every week. It’s the people back at home – and the people everywhere – who are voting for me and supporting me. Without them, I wouldn’t be here. Going back home and getting to see all the people that will be there is going to be really awesome.”
Here’s some of Lee’s Chicago hometown schedule:

After all the hometown love, the Top 3 finalists will compete head-to-head on the second-to-last performance show of the season, airing Tuesday, May 18th, on FOX. Each contestant will sing two songs – Judges’ Choice and Finalist’s Choice – as they vie for a coveted spot in the finale.

Tune in the following night, Wednesday, May 19th, to find out which two finalists will face off in the final showdown at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE. During the live results show, Travis Garland will take the stage, and pop sensation Justin Bieber will perform his hits “Baby” and “U Smile.”

Another Idol Voted Off As The Season 9 Top 3 Is Revealed!

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Since there were 3 performers scheduled, they got right into it with R&B superstar & former American Idol winner Fantasia kicking off the show with a performance of “Bittersweet.”

Loved her hair tonight…gorgeousness! And another thing I always love about Fantasia is that she sings her heart out every time she’s onstage…she does not hold back. Her voice was so beautiful and soulful tonight that I had to rewind & watch the performance again. Nice to see her :-)

After showing footage of past Idol contestants’ visits back to their hometowns for their parades, Ryan reveals that Casey James is safe & in the Top 3! After that, the thought that immediately pops into my head is that Big Mike is going home…unless there’s a major shocker & Lee or Crystal didn’t get enough votes. We’ll see as the hour unfolds. In either case, this means that my prediction last night that Big Mike & Casey would be the Bottom 2 was totally incorrect, lol.

After the break, former Idol contestant Chris Daughtry returned to the Idol stage with his band to perform “September.” I’ve always been a big Chris Daughtry fan. As a matter of fact, I thought he should’ve won his season. Turns out it didn’t matter because he’s had amazing success without the title. For a while during his 1st album, he had taken to wearing guy liner. I’m glad he’s stopped that because he’s really cute without it. And he sounded lovely tonight.

After another break, more results. Lee DeWyze is safe and in the Top 3! I have to say that I like Lee, but I’m not blown away by him like the judges and many viewers. He’s good though, but not my fav.

After another break Bon Jovi performs! For some reason, I thought that Bon Jovi looked strangely out of place on the Idol stage tonight. Not sure why I felt like that because I like them a lot. It was just odd looking to me. They’re so legendary that it seems they wouldn’t need an American Idol to promote their stuff. As they went to break, they showed a shot of Big Mike & Crystal and you just had the feeling that Mike’s gotta already know that he’s going home.

After the break, Ryan reveals what we already knew was coming, Crystal Bowersox is safe & is in the Top 3!

So Michael Lynche’s dream of being in the Top 3 did not come true…Voted off for the 2nd time, but this time there’s no Judges’ Save. He’s going home :-(

But it was sweet to see him hugging & saying bye to all the judges. I’d love to know what Simon Cowell was saying to him during their long conversation after the performance. And how cute was it to see Big Mike holding his daughter & giving her smooches on the cheek at the end of the show?!

So there you have it, the American Idol Season 9 Top 3 is solidified. Crystal Bowersox, Lee DeWyze & Casey James will be heading back to their hometowns this weekend for their parades. Then it’s back to Hollywood to compete next week:

On Tuesday, the Top 3 finalists will compete head-to-head on the second-to-last performance show of the season. Each contestant will sing two songs – Judges’ Choice and Finalist’s Choice – as they vie for a coveted spot in the finale.

Tune in the Wednesday night to find out which two finalists will face off in the final showdown at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE. During the live results show, Travis Garland will take the stage, and pop sensation Justin Bieber will perform his hits “Baby” and “U Smile.”

Jamie Foxx Mentors The American Idols!

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

It’s getting down to the wire on American Idol with only 4 contestants remaining. Jamie Foxx mentored the Idols last year and I guess they were impressed with him, because he’s back tonight for some more mentoring! Since he’s a superstar of movies & music, he’s perfect to give them advice as they sing music from the movies…or Songs of the Silver Screen! Jamie brought the Idols special t-shirts he had printed up. He had two types of shirts printed up…one that said “contestant” and one that said “artist.” Jamie challenged them to perform their songs as the artists that they’ll be after American Idol. If he felt they achieved that, he gave them the “artist” shirt. If not, they got stuck with the not so favorable “contestant” shirt.

~Sidebar, I see Taye Diggs & his wife Idina Menzel in the audience. Btw, I’m LOVING Taye’s show “Private Practice” this season…juicy storylines!

Back to Idol, the contestants will sing individual songs tonight, but they’ll also be paired up for two duets. First up…

Lee DeWyze: Lee chose to sing “Kiss from a Rose” by Seal from the “Batman Forever” soundtrack. As Lee rehearsed, Jamie got in his face, which I’m sure was pretty uncomfortable. But he was trying to convince Lee that if he was uncomfortable with that, he’d be uncomfortable singing in front of thousands of people. In other words, he was telling Lee what the judges have been telling him all season…get in touch with your confidence. I automatically knew that this song would go well with Lee’s voice. He sounds good, but it’s hard for me not to compare him to Seal when I listen. Seal’s voice is so beautiful & haunting on the original song. I didn’t feel that when I listened to Lee. I thought he was good, but it didn’t strike me as amazing…which is not ideal at this late point in the competition when you really have to stand out from the others. Randy agreed with me. He said that Lee did nothing with the song and that it was just okay. Ellen said that there could have been more done with the song, but that she thought he was good. Kara said that this is one of the most difficult songs to sing and that Lee got lost vocally and had tune issues. But she also said that you can’t take away from the fact that Lee is still great. Simon said the performance was verging on karaoke because he tried too hard to sound like the original. Jamie Foxx gave Lee the “artist “ t-shirt during rehearsals, but Simon suggested that he take it back & give him a “contestant” shirt. Ouch!

Michael Lynche: Michael said that a year ago, he set the goal for himself to make it into the American Idol Top 3. So he says he definitely feels lots of pressure to perform well since he’s so close. Big Mike chose to sing “Will You Be There” by Michael Jackson from the “Free Willy” soundtrack. Jamie observed that Mike is a little worried that maybe he shouldn’t be in the competition…probably because he’s been in the bottom so many times. But Jamie feels like Mike should be in the competition. I agree with Jamie. I think that the at home audience is definitely not into R&B artists this season because most of them were voted off early on. I mean, extremely talented singers were voted off, but someone like Tim Urban stayed on the show until recently. So I think that Big Mike has been in the bottom so many times because the audience doesn’t sway R&B this season. He’s certainly not in the bottom because of lack of talent. Most times he sings beautifully and performs with confidence. Jamie felt that Mike needed to loosen up, so he had him dancing & doing boxing moves. At the end of the rehearsal, he decided to give Mike the “contestant” shirt, but Mike declined…or as Jamie put it, ‘he kinda punked me!’ As far as the live performance, I thought he sounded just swell. I’ve heard him sing songs that were better suited for his voice, but he sounded pretty good. Performance-wise, He wasn’t as tensed as he was in rehearsals, but again…I’ve seen him more confident onstage on past shows. I think these contestants are really letting their nerves get the best of them so far tonight. Randy loves the song, but thought it wasn’t the right choice for Mike. He thought the performance was just alright. Ellen told Mike that she was disappointed to hear that his goal was to make it into the Top 3, when his goal should be to win. She said that he’s consistently good & always sounds good, but that the performance tonight was a little bit predictable. Kara said she wanted to feel goose bumps from Mike tonight like she did when he sang “This Woman’s Work” & “I’m Ready For Love”, but she didn’t feel them. She thought he played it safe. Simon said he had no idea what “Free Willy” is and Mike had to describe it to him, lol. Simon said that he could have made a better song choice, but he felt that at least Mike gave it 100% and sang like he meant it. So some good news for Big Mike from at least one of the judges.

Before Crystal & Casey’s solo performances, Crystal & Lee were paired up to sing a duet. They sang “Falling Slowly” from the “Once” soundtrack. Now that’s a film I’ve never heard of. Both Lee & Crystal played their guitars as they sang together while facing each other. I thought that was a cute touch. They sounded really nice singing together. I felt that Lee stood out a little more than Crystal did during the performance. He did much better than he did during his solo song. Randy said it was a great song by two great singers & could be a hit right now. Ellen said it was great. Kara said it was one of her favorite moments of the entire season. She loved the way they interacted with each other, loved the chemistry & support for each other. She said they brought out the best in each other, which is what duets are about. Simon called it a fantastic song! Btw, Crystal says that Lee’s her “musical” crush…wow.

Casey James: Jamie Foxx & Casey are my fellow Texans, so Jamie was excited to meet another native of Texas! Casey chose to sing “Mrs. Robinson” by Simon & Garfunkel from “The Graduate” soundtrack. Jamie said while Casey was singing, he noticed he wasn’t focused. So he told Casey to act as if he were a woman & seduce him. Again, this was to teach Casey to connect with the audience. Jamie was impressed enough by the end of rehearsal, that he gave Casey the “artist” shirt. I like that Casey performed the song sitting on the stage & surrounded by audience members. This is an iconic song and to Casey’s credit, he put his personal touch on it & made it uniquely his. Randy & Simon picked on Kara, saying that Casey chose this song because she was the older woman pursuing him like Ann Bancroft’s character did Dustin Hoffman’s character in “The Graduate”! Lol! Of course, Kara told them to stop it & told Casey not to listen to them. Randy thought Casey sounded cool, but didn’t feel like Casey did anything different with the song. Ellen liked that Casey changed the song up a bit & thought it was smart. Then she pointed at Kara & said she’ll turn it over to Mrs. Robinson, lol. Kara said it was a good song choice because Casey showed vulnerability. But that’s all she could get out because Simon & Randy kept picking on her. Simon didn’t think the song or the performance had the substance required on such an important night in the competition.

Crystal Bowersox: Crystal chose to sing “I’m Alright” by Kenny Loggins from the “Caddyshack” soundtrack. During rehearsals, Crystal said she was a little star struck that she was singing to Jamie Foxx. But Jamie told her not to be intimidated…to raise her pretty blue eyes up & look right into the crowd to let them know that she’s alright. He gave her the “artist” shirt. I love that Crystal was so true to herself during this performance tonight. She didn’t sing the song just like the original. She sang & screamed unabashedly & gave a good, solid performance. Randy thought she did a nice job & liked that she switched the song up to make it fit her. He also said that Crystal is a true artist. Ellen thought that Crystal took that song & made it better. Kara agreed with Ellen & also agreed with Randy that she’s an artist. Simon said that after that performance, Crystal is back in the game. Hmm, I wasn’t aware that she was ever out of it.

The 2nd pair up of the night was the duet between Casey & Big Mike. They sang “Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman” by Bryan Adams from the “Don Juan DeMarco” soundtrack. Appropriately enough, both Mike & Casey are playing their guitars. And they faced the audience, not each other like the Crystal & Lee. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about these two singing together, but they actually sounded really good! They both were true to themselves…Casey sounded bluesy & Mike sounded soulful. And they harmonized really beautifully together! Randy loved Casey’s guitar playing & thought that Michael’s singing was brilliant & sultry! Ellen said, ‘As a matter of fact, yes I have loved a woman.’ Lol, she’s so silly! She didn’t actually comment on their performance, but she was funny nonetheless. Kara said they were good & that the duets tonight were incredible & better than all of the solo performances. I totally agree with her. Simon said Jamie should give his “artist” shirts to the duets tonight! He said that Casey & Mike were good and job well done.

Like I said earlier, nerves got the best of the contestants. The only one who didn’t come across as nervous during her solo performance was Crystal. The duets were excellent & I actually liked Big Mike & Casey’s duet the best. Ironically though, I believe that those are the two who’ll wind up in the bottom tomorrow. I say that because Mike & Casey have been in the bottom more than Crystal & Lee. Also, I believe that their fanbases aren’t as strong as Crystal & Lee’s. We’ll find out who gets voted off & who makes it into the Top 3 on tomorrow’s Results Show. Also tomorrow, Bon Jovi performs and Idol alums Fantasia & Chris Daughtry return to the Idol stage to perform!

Here’s The 1st Official Picture Of American Idol’s New Top 4!

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Fresh off of last night’s elimination of Aaron Kelly, here’s the 1st official picture of the new American Idol Top 4!

On Tuesday, Grammy and Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx will return to IDOL as a guest mentor to help the Top 4 finalists – Crystal Bowersox, Lee DeWyze, Casey James and Michael Lynche – prepare to sing hit songs from the movies.

The following night, Wednesday, Idol alum Chris Daughtry returns with his band to perform. Bon Jovi will also perform that night as we find out who receives enough votes to stay in the competition and who is sent home.

Harry Connick Jr. & Lady Gaga Sing As The Latest Idol Is Voted Off!

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Watching the Top 5 perform their Sinatra medley, I have to admit that I’m a little miffed that there’s only one woman left on the show. What’s the deal with that cuz chicks rule! Lol.

They could easily fit this Results Show into 30 minutes, but they choose to stretch it out for an entire hour by playing a bunch of fluff & with Ryan trying to be funny. But it was good to see what happens behind the scenes on Tuesdays with the contestants.

Lee Dewyze was the 1st brought to center stage. Lee was the one that the judges thought did the best last night. But I thought that he & Big Mike were head to head. Lee sounded great, but his stage presence was lacking for me. He seemed more comfortable than before, but it certainly wasn’t a master class in stage presence. No surprise, though, that Lee is safe & will be in the Top 4 next week.

I LOVE Lady Gaga! So I’m super excited that she’s back on the show tonight. Gaga has told me that she grew up listening to me on the radio, which made me feel old at 1st…until I realized that when I got to NYC 9 years ago, she had to have been 15-years-old. So that made me feel a little better, lol. Anyway, I did a quick interview with Gaga last year & you can watch it on The Shelley Wade Treatment segment of this site by CLICKING HERE! That said, I loved Gaga’s performance of “Alejandro” tonight. Since seeing what crazy outfit she’s gonna where is just as big a part of the experience as watching her performance, I’ve gotta describe what she wore…A black fishnet & lace body suit that also covered her entire face up to her blond hairline. She topped that off with a shear cape, which she ditched halfway through the performance. And even though she wore all of that, she still managed to show almost all of her skin, lol!

But she definitely brought the drama, playing the piano AND doing full on choreography with her scantily clad male dancers. Entertaining indeed!

After a break, they gave us more fluff with a behind the scenes look at Harry Connick Jr.’s mentoring of the Idols. But I didn’t mind because Harry’s so funny! One thing he said was that he’s got a bone to pick with the judges for saying that the contestants are “pitchy” so much. Harry said that they should say “out of tune,” not “pitchy.” Wow, well he showed them, lol! But seriously, Randy wouldn’t have anything to say this season if they took the word “pitchy” out of is repertoire, lol! He’s been saying that this season more than he says “dawg”! After that, Harry performed his song “And I Love Her.” His voice is still smooth like butter and his orchestra sounded beautiful. Loved the performance…as usual! And bonus treat…the Top 5 sang a medley of some of Harry’s hits as he accompanied them! Afterwards, Harry told a really cute story about the 1st time he met Frank Sinatra, then announced that he & his band will be performing on Broadway for 11 dates starting July 15th….gotta take in a few of those shows!

Back from the break, time to find out who else is safe & who’s going home. I knew that Crystal Bowersox would be safe, but I’m shocked that Casey James wasn’t in the bottom! I mean, I like Casey, but the judges gave him a tongue lashing last night! That means that Big Mike & Aaron are the Bottom 2 this week.

After the final break, we find out that Aaron Kelly is the contestant going home. This doesn’t surprise me since Big Mike had such a great performance last night. Aaron’s an adorable kid & he did such a great job this season ☺

Next week, the Top 4 (Michael Lynche, Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze & Casey James) will sing Songs of the Cinema with Jamie Foxx mentoring!

Harry Connick, Jr. Mentors As The Idols Sing The Songs Of Sinatra!

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

I can’t tell you enough how SUPER EXCITED I am that Harry Connick Jr.’s mentoring the American Idol Top 5 tonight! Harry has been one of my favorites for years & years. I was even devastated when Harry married his wife☺. I mean, he could’ve waited for me! But I understand…she was a Victoria’s Secret model, lol! For the newbies, Harry was the precursor to Michael Buble. But seriously, he’s extremely talented & the Idols are lucky to have the chance to work with him. Not only did he mentor them, but he arranged their performances & will be accompanying them on piano during their live performances with some of his band members.

Harry’s perfect to mentor the Idols as they sing songs from The Frank Sinatra Songbook. The old standards that Harry sings & that Frank sang are some of my favorite songs ever. This is a special night for me! Btw, Sinatra’s daughters Nancy & Tina were in the audience tonight and they had a special gift for Simon! Turns out, Simon’s a big Frank Sinatra fan, so they were so kind to bring him their Dad’s “F.A.S.” monogrammed hanky…how exciting is that?!

Aaron Kelly: Harry’s always been a funny & playful guy, so he had jokes when Aaron 1st walked in the room…he yelled out, ‘Big Mike!’, lol! Aaron’s singing “Fly Me To The Moon”…completely awesome song! Harry gave him advice on transitioning from a note to fit the chords being played by the band. He says he really likes Aaron & that he’s got such a sweet voice. Harry’s right, Aaron’s got a sweet voice. He doesn’t sound bad singing this song. But to be singing a song with such hopeful & playful lyrics about love, his demeanor onstage was just way too serious for me. He sounded decent though. Randy thought he did a really good job. Ellen joked that she thought the piano was a little pitchy, which got a big laugh from Harry, lol! Ellen thought he really pulled the performance off & had beautiful vocals. Kara thought it was good, but thinks it wasn’t as strong compared to last week. Kara suggested that Aaron learn a little more charisma & how to fill up the stage. I guess that was a little along the lines of what I mentioned. He really needs to interpret the words of the song better. His facial expressions & presence onstage just didn’t match the message of the song in my opinion. But Kara did say that she expected to see Aaron still on the show next week. Simon mentioned that he’ll treasure his Sinatra hanky for the rest of his life! He said that he adored Frank because he was the king of cool with a swagger & a believability. He said that if Frank was a lion, Aaron was just a mouse. Again, along the same line of thought that I mentioned. These kids have it hard tonight because we’re gonna be thinking about Frank Sinatra with every note they try to hit & with every step they take onstage. Frank’s singing was amazing & his stage presence was full of confidence. But Simon ended by saying that Aaron tries hard and that’s why people like him.

Casey James: Casey says he’s been listening to Harry his whole life, so it was totally awesome to work with him! Casey chose to sing “Blue Skies.” Of all the contestants, I worried this week that Casey’s bluesy sound wouldn’t do well with singing these old standards. But Harry said that he thought Casey would do great. He said that it doesn’t seem to be about the lyrics with Casey, but it’s about being the vehicle for his blues. That’s odd to say since lyrics are so important to the song & a singer’s interpretation of them. But I trust Harry’s instincts & musical opinions because he’s so brilliant musically. He says that sometimes it’s not about the lyrics, but about the groove. I have to say that after his performance…I was pleasantly surprised that Casey didn’t sound terrible! I mean, it was nothing near to how Sinatra would sound, but it wasn’t horrendous. Randy thought it was Casey’s worst performance, wow. Ellen thought the performance was very stiff. Kara said that it took Casey a long time to relax, but that at least he held some good notes. But then she said he sounded like a lamb…I don’t think that’s a compliment! Simon said that Casey wasn’t fantastic & that he came across as embarrassed and a bit awkward. Btw, Harry mentioned that Casey sang the song better in rehearsals earlier in the night. Wow, rough judging session for Casey.

~Sidebar~ Sir Anthony Hopkins was in the Idol audience 2nite!

Crystal Bowersox: Singing “Summer Wind.” I love Nat “King” Cole’s version of this song. Harry said that what he liked about Crystal’s interpretation was that she was singing about something personal. He actually didn’t have much mentoring advice for Crystal because he felt that she was already ready. Huge compliment! And she looked beautiful with her updo & her black, lacy evening gown! Crystal not only looked the part, but she sang the song well. Her voice sounded great with the big band…the music didn’t over power her. She sang strong when the band got big & she sang soft & tender when the song called for it. She was just great. She could’ve fit right into a smoky piano bar singing jazz tunes! And although we’re used to comparing her to Melissa Etheridge & Bonnie Raitt, Crystal showed that she’s versatile enough to sing the old standards too! And all along, she remained true to who she is as an artist because she made the song hers! And that’s why you gotta love Crystal Bowersox! Randy thought it was just okay & a little sleepy for him. Ellen wanted her to loosen up more, but said that Crystal has so many different sides to her, that it’s really impressive. Kara said that it was out of Crystal’s element, but she kind of liked it because she had great phrasing. Simon loved the song, but wasn’t sure if he would’ve chosen it for Crystal. He said the 1st half was too jazzy, but the 2nd half was better. The judges weren’t as impressed with her as I was!

Michael Lynche: Singing “The Way You Look Tonight.” Harry says that this is one of his favorite songs. He suggests that with a song as wonderful as this, you don’t have to mess with the melody too much. He told Michael to think about his wife when he sings this song so that the words are true for him. Michael sounded lovely, as usual. It’s funny how every time he starts singing another line, Big Mike has to lick his lips! Lol, watch out LL Cool J! Randy thought that Harry’s arrangement was unbelievable and that Big Mike’s vocals were unbelievable! Ellen says that Mike seems to have the most confidence onstage compared to the other contestants. She said he looked the part, he sounded the part, he had lots of charisma, smoothness & was very good. Kara said that Mike found the drama in the song…he took us up, he took us down & took us on a journey. She said he did everything right, including not losing himself in the song. Simon said that the 1st three performances were just okay, but that Big Mike’s performance was better. He said that everything worked, was fantastic & well done!

Lee Dewyze: Singing “That’s Life.” Harry says that he likes Lee a lot & that his wife thinks he’s really cute! He joked that Lee is a new & improved version of him! The advice Harry had for Lee was to make sure he emphasized certain words in the song while singing them so that the audience really knows the story of what he’s been through. Lee sounded pretty good singing this song. It was a good song choice for him, but I wish that his stage presence was a little more commanding. The song was a good fit for his personality though. Randy loved Lee’s performance. Ellen said that if this was the last night of performances, Lee would’ve just won the whole thing. Hmm, I wouldn’t agree with that because Big Mike’s stage presence & vocals were better than Lee’s. Kara thought the performance was amazing & suggested that Lee practice believing that he can win the contest. Simon said that Harry brought out Lee’s personality & his confidence. Simon thought it was the best performance of the night.

It was a great evening! Harry was the most fun & informative mentor so far this season & I can’t wait to see him performing on Idol 2morrow night. Lady Gaga will also return to the Idol stage 2morrow. Going strictly from the judges’ comments, Casey, Aaron & Crystal may wind up in the Bottom 3. And if I were a betting woman, I’d say Casey will be the one going home. Aaron would be my next choice to go home. Results Show is tomorrow.

Here’s Who Was Voted Off American Idol! Did America Get It Right?

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

After 33 million votes, the results are in. By the end of the show, we’ll know which of the Top 6 will be going home. To kick off the show though, Rascal Flatts performed their song “Unstoppable.” This was a change of pace since most results shows kick off with the Idol contestants performing a song from the week’s theme.

After a break, they showed footage of the contestants visiting Mike Mitchell, the director of “Shrek Forever After.” They all got a chance to practice voicing scenes from the movie. They were then treated to a screening of the movie. “Shrek Forever After” stars Cameron Diaz & Antonio Banderas joined Ryan onstage to talk about the movie, which comes out May 21st in 3D.

Finally down to business, time to find out who’s safe & who’s not. The contestants were all lined up onstage in twos. Siobhan Magnus & Lee Dewyze, Aaron Kelly & Crystal Bowersox, Michael Lynche & Casey James. Of course since there’s got to be 3 in the bottom, Ryan did some stage maneauvering with the contestants. He moved Siobhan Magnus over with Big Mike & Casey and revealed that this was the Bottom 3! Wow, totally not what I predicted. I would have predicted Aaron Kelly to leave. So that means, that Aaron, Crystal & Lee are safe & will be in the Top 5! But sadly, Big Mike, Siobhan & Casey are in the Bottom 3 this week. If I had to chose someone to go home out of this group, I’d chose Siobhan. We’ll see who America chose to go home in a few.

After a break, Idol alum Carrie Underwood introduced her friends & tour mates Sons of Sylvia to perform “Love Left To Lose.”

Continuing Country Week, Lady Antebellum performed their smash hit “Need You Now.”
FYI, this is actually a performance they recorded a couple of weeks ago. Btw, Hilary of Lady Antebellum tried out to be an American Idol contestant twice before becoming famous, but never made it past the 1st round of auditions!

After the break, Shakira joined Rascal Flatts onstage to perform her song “Gypsy.” Love her!

Ryan then gives Big Mike the good news that he’s safe. After hugging it out with Siobhan & Casey, he has a seat with the rest of the safe ones.

After the final break, Siobhan & Casey stand onstage to learn their fate. Ryan then delivers the tough news to Siobhan that she’s going home tonight.

Even with the support of the Vote For The Worst people, Siobhan could not be saved. She’s truly talented & many thought that she’d be close to the top, but even her signature screaming couldn’t save her. This is a tough one because at this point, nothing but talented people will be voted off. It’s the nature of the beast. So here’s’ the list of the Season 9 Top 5:

Crystal Bowersox
Michael Lynche,
Casey James,
Lee Dewyze &
Aaron Kelly

They’ll be mentored by Harry Connick, Jr. next week! You have no idea how much I love Harry Connick, Jr.!!! He’ll coach them as the perform songs from The Frank Sinatra Song Book!
